Hi everyone, my brother's client keep crashing on start up with a security exception window and an error message that reads:

'Malformed URL exception:unknown protocol:socket'

He's running Windows 7 32bit, browsing with Firefox, and using Avast antivirus

Uninstall Avast, install Microsoft Security Essentials.

You, apparently, don't have Java installed.

Rephrase, you don't have Java as an applet in your browser.

Tried the security center/avast switch to no avail.

neoliminal, I do have java in my browser, its a bit absurd to suggest I haven't. Javas own browser test agrees with me.

FFB doesn't require Java applets to work at all. It's using Java Web Start to launch a proper Java application. In fact, I encourage you to disable the java add-on/plugin in your browser to improve security.

The issue here is that something is blocking Java's access to the network. This is most likely some form of network security suite that is messing it up, or perhaps you're behind a proxy. Alternatively, your Java installation is messed up and you could try uninstalling all Java versions you have on your machine and reinstall the latest one.
