The final Week 3 match has been given an extension - look for them to play this afternoon. After that, we will hopefully be back on track for a round per week over the next little while. Standings analysis coming tomorrow. For now, here are recaps!

Week 3
AWC South vs. NWC North

Har Ganeth Korsairs 2 - Copper Island Chargers 1

A turn 1 foul stunned the Charger's mercenary snow troll but also drew the attention of the ref. One of Copper Island's stars, Boomer Eziasson, knocked a couple Korsairs down with a well-laid bomb, but a 1d blitz was Skulled, and Har Ganeth began farming passes. Copper Island forced their way over to the ball, but Boomer's second bomb attempt CAS'd himself while missing the Korsair standing next to him. Har Ganeth declined a scoring opportunity to farm passes and screened, but were cut off, and a blitzing snow troll freed the ball. His block the next turn hit Both Down, though, and Har Ganeth got the turn 8 TD. Bad KO rolls left only 8 Korsairs to defend in the second half. Copper Island hit a quick forward pass, but Korsairs dodged free to steal the ball. Copper Island was unsuccessful in chasing it down for a couple turns, but used the time to remove other Korsairs from the field. Har Ganeth blew through their rerolls while trying to escape, and a failed 1d blitz with the ball-carrier finally let the Chargers reclaim the ball. They stalled until turn 8, surviving a final 1d blitz before scoring. The Korsairs had only five players for their turn 8, but that suddenly became turn 7 with a Riot, and Har Ganeth passed the ball forward. Copper Island blitzed the ball-carrier, but couldn't find a Pow on the initial hit, and the Frenzy follow-up failed the GFI. Har Ganeth made dodges and a GFI to take the game.

Week 4
AWC West vs. NWC East

Kansas Raptors 2 - Surrey Serpents 2

Surrey hooked in one side and then reversed. They got to scoring distance after three turns, but Kansas sent star player Hemlock in for a blitz, surfing the Surrey ball-carrier. Kansas failed the pickup, though, and Surrey knocked most of the Raptors aside, making the 4+ to grab the ball and score. Kansas ignored the Surrey line, running most of their team in deep. Surrey Skulled a 2d block and then a 1d the turn after to leave them unable to contest the tying score. The fans got in the game for the second half, KOing a Serpent with a Rock. Kansas tried a hook again, but the blitz with a MB saurus found Skull/Both Down, rerolled to the same. A couple Serpents went deep to try for the ball, but could not manage the pickup. Kansas also failed the pickup on their turn, though, and the ball bounced away from the Raptors, allowing a second Surrey touchdown. Kansas restarted their drive, this time securing the ball early before hitting. The Serpents screened, keeping Kansas from making much progress. The clock forced the ball forward on turn 7. Surrey marked the ball-carrier, but he dodged away, making a 1d blitz and more Stunty dodges to tie the game again. Kansas set up near the line, preventing any OTT shenanigans, but lost a saurus to the final hits.

Necropolis Priest Kings 1 - B.Aires Tangueros 0

B.Aires removed a Priest King on the line, but failed a pickup, and Necropolis moved in. The Tangueros went for the second turn pickup early, but that also failed, even through reroll, and the ball bounced back near the B.Aires end zone. Necropolis marked the furthest back Tangueros. B.Aires got their elf free to finally get the ball, but he then snaked a GFI while getting away from the sidelines. The first Necropolis action of the next turn saw a tomb guardian fail a 2d block, though, and B.Aires finally ended a turn with possession. They got the ball forward to scoring distance, but failed a dodge while trying to get a screen in place, and Necropolis took down the ball-carrier and marked the ball. B.Aires got it back, but snaked another GFI, and could not retrieve the ball before halftime. The Tangueros swarmed the line on Perfect Defence. Necropolis still found good blocks, but could not progress the ball. A failed GFI and Loner from a big guy finally let the Priest Kings break out, and they blitzed and made a GFI to score on turn 5. Pitch Invasion started the final drive of the game by stunning three from each team. B.Aires hooked in and then reversed, but again failed a dodge to screen, and Priest Kings KO'd the ball-carrier. A final GFI fail on turn 7 left no Tangueros in scoring range as the game ended. The Priest Kings celebrated the victory with nice skill rolls, getting +AG on a blitz-ra and +MA on an already +AG thro-ra.

AWC East vs. NWC West

North West Walking Brawls 2 - Hollywood Roundup Gang 1

A Rock Badly Hurt Hollywood's only catcher on the opening kickoff. They caged up while Leaping star Jordell Freshbreeze and their wardancer in deep. North West didn't take either down, and they headed to the end zone to take a pass for 1-0. The Roundup Gang got a Blitz on the next kickoff, but tried rerolling a 2d Push to create an opening in the Walking Brawl line and found only Skulls. North West grabbed the ball. Hollywood went after the ball-carrier, but failed a GFI. The Walking Brawls moved in, but failed a pass to dump the ball free, and Hollywood managed to pass it forward to a waiting lino. The dodge to screen her was failed, though, and North West RIP'd the ball-carrier (apo'd to MNG) and took the ball back. North West removed multiple Gangers from the field over the next couple turns while punting the ball forward, winning the race to get it back when the Hollywood wizard fizzled. Jordell Freshbreeze downed the ball-carrier and stole the ball, but he was surrounded on the sideline and surfed. Hollywood got to the ball first, but flubbed the pickup, and North West had Sure Hands for the pickup and AG4 for the catch to score. The casualties and failed KO rolls saw only four of the Roundup Gang take the field for the second half. They had a chance to be relevant, as North West repeatedly failed while handling the ball, but Hollywood missed dodges five turns in a row, leading to a pitch clear before North West scored on turn 6. Two of the four Roundup Gang KOs made it back for the last turns of the half. They made a go of it, one running in and one falling back to grab the ball, but could not make the rolls needed to get the ball downfield.

Welcome to the first standings analysis post of Season IX! With the last Week 3 game completed, we are now just past the quarter mark of the season. That's still a lot of games to be played, but the standings have definitely started to show trends. Let's take a look at the standings as of right now - but first, some setup.

The NWFL runs a 14-week Regular Season, with the teams split into eight divisions and two conferences. At the end of the Regular Season, you will make the playoffs if you win your division; if you don't, you can still get a wild-card slot if you are one of the two best finishers in your conference who did not win the division. That is what you are aiming for, and what the rankings I use will show below.

Also, for those of you who are new this season, please note that I use win percentage to determine standings for purposes of the Weekly, as I like it better than a flat point score when comparing teams that have played different numbers of games. This may make my rankings here slightly different than the official ones linked off the group page.

AWC

DW1: Essen Exsanguinators (2-1-0) - 5 points
DW2: Winchester Wicked Wrongdoers (2-2-0) - 6
DW3: Colorado Chipmunks (2-0-1) - 4
DW4: Los Angeles Reapers (1-2-1) - 4
WC1: Surrey Serpents (2-2-0) - 6
WC2: North West Walking Brawls (3-0-1) - 6

Just out: Alethkar Shard Warriors (2-0-1), Argentinian Caudillos (1-3-0), Buenos Aires Titans (1-2-1), Vancouver Rot-Nucks (2-0-2)

Essen is currently on top of the hotly contested AWC West, with both Surrey and Alethkar above 50% and in hot pursuit. None of those teams have played each other yet, with Essen-Alethkar coming up this week, so the standings may change a lot once those happen. The East also features three teams over 50%, with North West and Argentina both trailing Winchester. Winchester and Argentina fought to an inconclusive draw in Week 3; the other division rival games have not yet occurred. Colorado is the only division leader in the AWC with a reasonably solid lead, being two points up on Detroit and holding a heads-up tiebreaker win on them. Finally, the North has a three-way tie at 4 points, with all three having played four games in the process. LA has the tiebreaker at the moment, but that is by no means an endorsement.

NWC

DW1: Nehekhara Guardians (4-0-0) - 8 points
DW2: White Rock Midnight (3-1-0) - 7
DW3: Green Back Smackers (2-1-0) - 5
DW4: Kansas Raptors (2-1-1) - 5
WC1: Har Ganeth Korsairs (3-0-0) - 6
WC2: New York Rats (2-1-0) - 5

Just out: Butte Kickers (2-0-1), St. Luna Cardiac Cardinals (1-2-0), Lindisfarne Midnight Sons (1-1-1), R'lyeh Regulars (2-0-2)

Nehekhara and Har Ganeth are dominating the standings at the moment, both undefeated so far. They go head-to-head in Week 5, which will solve that problem for at least one of them. Butte is also doing well in the North, with only a single loss, although the difference between one and zero is very evident at the moment. White Rock is leading the South, but New York is coming up fast, and has a match scheduled against White Rock in Week 5. St. Luna is also plus-500 in there. Green Back has a solid lead on R'lyeh in the West, but with another big Week 5 match coming up. Finally, the East has Kansas with both a percentage and a tiebreaker lead on Lindisfarne.

Nice to see the NWC dominance this season, we all knew it when the divisions were drawn, but no one wanted to say it... Wink

Season is still so young it's hard to glean too much from the current standings, but it's always better to start fast than to start slow (even better to finish fast too!)

Two kroxigor touchdowns, two interceptions in the same game, and a second Legend on the same team. Strange things are afoot at the Circle K. Here are your Monday morning recaps!

Week 4
AWC South vs. NWC North

Butte Kickers 2 - Argentine Noldorins 1

Argentina KO'd two Kickers to start the game. Butte cut off the initial advance, but their second turn blitz found four Skulls, and the Noldorins took an easy score. Butte Badly Hurt two Noldorins on their offensive turn, but Argentina's +ST +AG catcher Fernando Fingon snuck in to take down the ball-carrier. They failed a dodge into three tackle zones to pick the ball up, though, and Butte reclaimed the ball, making the GFI into the end zone on turn 8. The Kickers went for a battle of attrition in the second half, specifically targeting Fernando Fingon and fouling him off the pitch. Argentina managed a 1d to knock the ball free, but Butte again recovered, dodging away to score on turn 7. Argentina's first hit of their last possession was Skulled, removing all chance to score.

AWC West vs. NWC East

Slann Frogcisco 49ers 3 - Lindisfarne Midnight Sons 1

Lindisfarne got a capital-B Blitz to start the game, but their blitz action was wasted by their snow troll through Loner. The ball bounced right to the 49er kroxigor, T.O., who knocked a Midnight Son out of his way and trucked downfield. Lindisfarne's troll again failed Wild Animal, but this time the Loner roll was successful; however, he failed the GFI to hit T.O., and the krox blitzed the same ulfwerener out of the way - this time for a Badly Hurt - and got into scoring range. A runner tried to blitz him, but failed Dauntless, and was KO'd. T.O. failed Bone-Head the next turn, then came back the turn after to help take down the troll. With their rerolls long since spent, 1d Skulls began plaguing Lindisfarne, and Slann Frogcisco mopped up the Midnight Sons, finally sending T.O. into the end zone on turn 8 with a successful Bone-Head roll. Both teams were short bodies for the second half. T.O. again played hero, using Break Tackle to blitz the ball-carrier, and Slann Frogcisco stole the ball the next turn, scoring when the blitz could not find Pows. The Midnight Sons started another drive, but again lost the ball quickly, this time to a Leap-fuelled blitz. Snakes from a 49er the turn after allowed Lindisfarne to get free and score, though. Perfect Defence let the Midnight Sons give up less free blocks on the line, but when a touchback gave the ball to T.O., he also had a path forward, blitzing his way into scoring range, and then using the last team reroll to GFI into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game and Super Star status.

Alethkar Shard Warriors 2 - Essen Exsanguinators 1

Essen took to the field with a Pro mercenary vampire, giving them their quota of four vamps. Alethkar held the ball back, wary of Gazes and the Essen wizard, but lost their skilled wight to a -MA injury. The teams skirmished without real progress being made. Essen finally pulled the trigger on the wizard, taking down the Alethkar ball-carrier, but while they got the ball briefly, the cross-field pass was intercepted. The Shard Warriors moved the ball up while Exsanguinators ran back to defend. Essen took the ball-carrier down, but held the ball instead of trying another pass, and Alethkar took it back, scoring on turn 7. The Exsanguinators charged in to try for a tie game, but the pass forward was once again intercepted. They tried again in the second half, but Alethkar out-hit them. A snaked dodge ended an Essen turn very early, and the Shard Warriors took the ball-carrier down and out. Another failed dodge from Essen let Alethkar collect the ball, and they transferred it to a flesh golem before scoring. Essen had two turns left to score, and managed it this time, getting a TD on vampire Uwe "The Reaper" Rosenberg to go with two CAS as he became the second player on the team, and only the fifth in the league, to make Legend.

Week 5
AWC North vs. NWC South

Vancouver Rot-Nucks 2 - Buenos Aires Titans 1

Buenos Aires got to the end zone quickly, stalling once before scoring. Vancouver moved the ball up. A 1d Leap blitz knocked it free, but Buenos Aires failed the pickup. A Rot-Nuck grabbed the ball and moved in with his teammates, but failed a GFI. Buenos Aires called for a fireball, hitting all three targeted Rot-Nucks for a regenerated CAS and two downs. A Titan got the ball and ran, but was taken down, and Vancouver got the ball back. A snaked dodge to start the next Buenos Aires turn left only one Titan, a catcher, in range to stop the score. A rotter tried a Both Down against him, but succeeded in killing himself instead. The -2d blitz on the ball found only Pushes, though, and Vancouver evened the score at the half. Vancouver moved in in the second half, removing Titans from the field. Buenos Aires managed a 2d on the ball, but could not knock it free, and failed the -2d the turn after. Vancouver ran the ball up and back, but failed a turn 7 handoff. The Titans just marked the ball instead of trying the pickup in two TZs, and the Rot-Nucks moved the marker away, made the pickup, and scored for the win. Previous casualties, MNGs, and a perm leave only five Titans available for their next game, along with six journeymen.

AWC East vs. NWC West

Hollywood Roundup Gang 3 - Shadowland Golds 2

Hollywood did some hitting and sent their wardancers in deep. Golds fell back to defend, and the teams flailed at each other for a bit while jockeying for position. The Roundup Gang failed to knock down a Gold in contact with their cage, letting Shadowland set up a 1d Strip Ball blitz to free the ball. They didn't have anyone in position to pick up, though, and Hollywood retrieved the ball and passed it forward to score. Shadowland started their first drive, but dodges and a 1d Pow let Hollywood steal it. 1d Skull reroll Skull from Shadowland gave the Roundup Gang the go-ahead for 2-0. Perfect Defence put the Roundup Gang squarely in the Golds' path to try for a two-turn score at the end of the half, but Shadowland rose to the challenge, CASing two of the Gang and making rolls to score. They hurt another Ganger to start the second. Hollywood used Gikta's Strength of da Bear to try for a 1d blitz on the ball, but the wardancer failed his Leap. Shadowland snaked a pass to score, but the same wardancer failed another Leap, this time Badly Hurting himself. Shadowland retrieved the ball, surviving one more 1d blitz before scoring. Hollywood was down bodies and spent time looking for an opening. The Golds knocked the ball free once, but the Roundup Gang recovered, and a second blitz could not find a Pow. Hollywood got to scoring range. Shadowland set up a 3d blitz to make up for their lack of Tackle, but failed the last GFI before the hit, and Hollywood dodged away on turn 8 to win the game.

Lindisfarne... blitz action was wasted by their snow troll ...again failed Wild Animal... failed the GFI to hit ...failed Dauntless... 1d Skulls began plaguing Lindisfarne...

Yeah, that about sums it up.

3 of the 4 first Wild Animal blocks/blitzes failed - and the one that succeeded tripped on the only GFI needed.

If there was a one-dice roll that I really needed, it was a 1 or a skull. Even some of the Armour Break rolls with Mighty Blow were double 1's. And for their part, it seemed that no 'Son could get knocked down without being Stunned (or worse) by any frog who cared to try.

2 kickoffs went 6 squares from center and then bounced OB to put the ball in the hands of the Krox, and then... oof. And meanwhile the Krox was re-rolling his score-critical fails like they were all 2+, a both-down krox blitz to start the drive, a failed GFI Turn 4 and another Turn 16 - ouch.

Hard to stop St 5 when the dice fall like that. :/

Thanks to everyone who got their games played. Here are the new recaps!

Week 4
AWC North vs. NWC South

St. Luna Cardiac Cardinals 1 - New York Rats 1

St. Luna's safety margin went away completely, with all three first-half rerolls stolen by New York's master chef. St. Luna held a couple extra Cardinals back with the ball-carrier, surviving the initial rush of Rats and caging. The Cardiac Cardinals made incremental progress, finally breaking out on turn 6. A snaked dodge from New York guaranteed St. Luna's score. The master chef again went the distance, stealing three more rerolls in the second half. New York collected the ball, but failed a block to CAS one of their own. A Skulled 2d block gave New York an opportunity, and they ran the ball around for a turn 4 score. St. Luna's Leader took the field to give them one reroll, which they used while opening a hole in New York's screen after the gutter runners came around to try for a blitz. New York was able to dodge Rats free for a 2d blitz, finding the Pow, and the ball was punted back downfield. St. Luna failed a pickup on turn 7 and Skulled a block on turn 8 - neither rerollable, obviously - ending the game in a draw.

AWC East vs. NWC West

Green Back Smackers 2 - Stone City SkullCrushers 0

A wasted reroll and Skulled block ended Green Back's first turn early, but the ball was still well-protected, and Stone City could not get to it. A couple Smacker passes were dropped, but they got the ball back each time, eventually passing it forward. Stone City used their wizard to take down the guards on the ball-carrier, but had nobody nearby to take advantage, and Green Back stalled for a turn 8 score. Stone City moved in in the second half, but was contained by Green Back. They managed to get one SkullCrusher free with the ball, but he failed a GFI. A Smacker grabbed the ball, and the attempted hit on him failed a GFI. Green Back got him to the goal line, stalling and then scoring.

Week 5
AWC North vs. NWC South

Cleveland Children 1 - Joplin Disasters 0

Joplin worked through the Cleveland lines, with the Children falling back and screening. A hit from the Cleveland troll maimed the senior Disaster, ogre Hugh Lindauer, for -MA. Joplin was unable to force a path through, putting several Disasters into scoring range on turn 7 to prepare for a passing play, but their first action on turn 8 was a failed dodge to end the half 0-0. Quick Snap to start the second gave Cleveland an easy shot at the Joplin troll, and their own troll took him down for an MNG. The Children also blitzed the Disaster elf for an RIP, their third dead elf of the season. Cleveland took an easy turn 4 score after that. Joplin got all three KOs back, but that still left them down 10-7 in manpower. The Disasters made a try of it, but could not break players loose in the backfield, with a failed dodge ending their last chance to score.

AWC West vs. NWC East

Slann Frogcisco 49ers 2 - Kansas Raptors 1

Kansas's first turn ended early on quad Both Down from a saurus. Slann Frogcisco MNG'd a Raptor near the ball, then grabbed it for themselves with a catcher. He was blitzed by Hemlock, but the stab did not get through his armour. Slann Frogcisco tried a hit back on Hemlock with the ball-carrier instead of running away, and Kansas punished them for it, knocking the ball free and then grabbing it a turn later. The ball changed hands multiple times from there, but a Raptor finally survived a blitz, breaking free to score on turn 8. Slann Frogcisco turned on the beatings in the last turns, though, leaving Kansas short two sauri and their kroxigor for the second half. A skink removed himself from the game with a foul on Slann Frogcisco POMBer Collin Kapernick, BH downgraded with apo, and Slann Frogcisco Badly Hurt another one en route to a turn 2 score. Kansas ran the ball around but could not protect it, and it bounced free. A Raptor laid another hit on Collin Kapernick, this time for a niggle, but Kansas could not pick up the ball, and a 49er got it into the end zone for 2-1. Kansas started another drive, hooking in one side then sending the ball up the other. The ball-carrier was blitzed down, with the blitzer catching it out of midair. Kansas took him down in turn, getting the ball into scoring distance. Slann Frogcisco sent their men in to screen, and Stunty dodges could not carry Kansas through to even the game.

AWC East vs. NWC West

Argentinian Caudillos 6 - Stone City SkullCrushers 0

Stone City's ogre went stupid on turn 1, and they failed to fill the hole he left in their lines, allowing Argentina an easy hit on the ball-carrier. A Caudillo blitzer grabbed the ball, surviving the 1d blitz before handing off to a catcher to score. Stone City restarted, but their ball-carrier found himself facing two blitzers quickly. A fireball took down one, but the other one stayed upright and in contact with the ball-carrier, who was then taken down. Argentina again stole the ball, stayed up through the return blitz, and scored. Stone City's first action of the next drive was an attempted ogre hit, which went Both Down. Argentina again stole the ball. Stone City took him down, but the ball bounced away from the nearby SkullCrushers, and a failed dodge to collect it let Argentina go up 3-0. The half ended with yet another failed block from the ogre. Argentina's first offensive possession gave them a two-turn touchdown. Stone City's ogre managed to find Pushes on their first block, but the second block found only Skulls and was not rerolled. Stone City's ball-carrier was exposed, and was taken down and the ball stolen for an eventual TD. Next SkullCrusher possession, next ogre fail, and the Caudillos rushed in. Stone City was able to pass the ball forward, but the Caudillo blitz found a Pow, and Argentina stole the ball one last time, passing it forward for 6-0. The Caudillos ended the second half with 5 rerolls, having gained two from kickoffs and not having spent one at any point during the half.

Winchester Wicked Wrongdoers 1 - North West Walking Brawls 1

Winchester ran the ball in quickly. North West tried a lightning bolt on the ball-carrier, taking him down, but the ball was caught by another Wicked Wrongdoer. The Wrongdoers bashed their way through the center of the North West formation, getting the new ball-carrier clear for a turn 8 score. More violence ensued in the second half, with the Walking Brawls gaining the advantage. Winchester got one 2d blitz on the ball-carrier, but could not take him down. North West moved the ball across the field and then into scoring position. A chainsaw foul ended the Walking Brawls' turn 6 before they could score. North West finally evened the game on turn 7 with only three Wicked Wrongdoers left to take the field, but one turn was not enough time to score.

Green Back Smackers 1 - R'lyeh Regulars 1

Green Back punched in, surfing a Regular on turn 2, but R'lyeh's return hits MNG'd a blitzer. More Smacker blood was spilled, but Green Back got a player clear with the ball and scored on turn 4. Perfect Defence saw ten Smackers run up to the line of scrimmage. R'lyeh only found a couple reasonable blocks before running out of 2ds, and they tried to collect the ball from just behind the line, but failed the 2+ pickup. Green Back smashed back, and the ball bounced into the arms of a black orc. R'lyeh could not take him down, and he was pushed to the other side of the R'lyeh formation, but was multiply marked, and hit instead of dodging away with the ball. The Regulars again failed to take him down, but Green Back Skulled a block. They no longer had time to get anyone into scoring distance, but did prevent R'lyeh from getting the ball either as the half ran out. The initial hits on R'lyeh's next drive worked much better, CASing two Smackers. A Regular got through with the ball, but R'lyeh could not keep Smackers out of the backfield, and R'lyeh scored on turn 4 in a mirror of the first half. Green Back moved the ball up, passing it to one side. R'lyeh cut that Smacker off, but could not find a Pow to take him down, and Green Back reversed to the other side with a forward pass. The Regulars finally knocked the ball free, and failed GFIs derailed Green Back's last attempts to score.

Week 6
AWC East vs. NWC West

Argentinian Caudillos 2 - North West Walking Brawls 0

North West caged and moved in while Argentina preferentially blitzed their ghouls. The Walking Brawls could not force a path in, and fell back. A rookie ghoul CAS'd herself on a failed dodge. Argentina went for the ball-carrier, but could not take him down, and he dodged away to run forward. This repeated itself again - blitz, dodge, run - but the goal-line blitz took North West's ball-carrier down to spring the ball. North West tried dodging away again to grab it and score, but were out of rerolls and tripped. The Caudillos relayed the ball to scoring distance, away from all of the Walking Brawls, but the score was prevented by an armour break off a lightning bolt. Argentina spent the last turn of the half taking a Walking Brawl down hard, though, killing +AG MB ghoul Grave Thomas. After halftime, Argentina picked up where they left off with another fatality, this time on a Dirty Player skeleton, and MNG'd a three-skill zombie the next turn before scoring. North West moved the ball up into a partial cage, but a Wrestle Leap blitz sprang the ball, and AG5 and multiple dodges let a Caudillo collect it. A Skulled block got Argentina clear with the ball. North West smashed the Caudillos within reach for multiple Badly Hurts, but could not prevent the 2-0 score.

Only a few matches played over the holiday weekend. Enjoy!

Week 5
AWC South vs. NWC North

Butte Kickers 2 - Colorado Chipmunks 0

Colorado started inflicting damage early, but snaked a pass on turn 2, and Butte stole the ball. A 1d blitz CAS'd the Kicker who grabbed it, but it bounced into multiple Kicker TZs, and Butte got it back, removing several Chipmunks from the field and caging up. The teams traded damage, but Butte was able to retain the ball and scored on turn 7. Skulls kept Colorado from scoring on turn 8, and Butte's final blitz of the half removed another Chipmunk from the game. The second half started with Pitch Invasion, with the fans stunning five players from each team, despite Butte's 2 FAME advantage. The Kickers did grab the ball, though, and hurt a couple more Chipmunks, while Colorado couldn't get their troll started. Butte moved their cage up in contact, and another failed Really Stupid roll and a bad -2d block put the Kickers into scoring distance. Colorado continued to try to hit the ball-carrier, but failed a GFI in the snow to miss a 1d blitz. They made the 6+ dodge the next turn for the sideline hit, though, finding pushes to surf the ball-carrier. A Chipmunk punted the ball to the other side of the field, but they failed rolls to mark it the next turn, and Butte found 3+ 3+ to pick up and GFI for 2-0.

AWC West vs. NWC East

Essen Exsanguinators 2 - B.Aires Tangueros 1

B.Aires permed a pair of thralls on the line, but failed a pass with a 5 SPP marauder. Essen blitzed the induced chainsaw away and marked the ball. Failure ensued for B.Aires, with their minotaur wasting the blitz and their elf snaking the pickup. Essen hit several Tangueros, but left the ball on the ground. B.Aires took the markers away, but their elf again rolled snakes, this time to fall over while dodging. B.Aires used their wizard to lightning bolt the Exsanguinator vampire in easy scoring distance, but Essen was able to use him to Gaze another Tanguero out of the way and hand off to a thrall to score. B.Aires restarted, but again had problems with unreliable big guys and dropped passes. Essen stole the ball, surviving some return hits while moving it forward, but snaked a dodge of their own to dump the ball free on turn 7. B.Aires passed the ball forward, but it was dropped. Essen got it back for one more try, but couldn't get a 3+ dodge through reroll, and the half ended with no further score. Essen tried running players in for the second half, but a group effort from the Tangueros surfed their ST5 vamp. Essen reversed down the other side. B.Aires marked all of the Exsanguinators and took down the furthest-forward, but Essen was able to Gaze, dodge, pass, catch, blitz, and GFI to score for 2-0. A Blitz put Essen near but not to the ball. B.Aires continued hurting thralls, but once again failed a pass for a skill, and AG5 let an Exsanguinator take possession. B.Aires Wrestled the ball-carrier down, but the ball bounced to another Exsanguinator. Yet another snaked dodge dumped the ball back out, though, and B.Aires finally connected with a pass to move the ball forward. An Exsanguinator stretched to take the new ball-carrier down, but the return hits CAS'd him, and the Tangueros scored on turn 8 for 2-1.

Alethkar Shard Warriors 1 - Necropolis Priest Kings 1

Alethkar took an early edge in beatings, KOing three Priest Kings and surfing another in the first three turns. Necropolis started a comeback, but a failed 4+ dodge meant they couldn't blitz their way to the ball-carrier, and the Shard Warriors moved the ball into scoring range, transferring it to a rookie wight and stalling until the turn 8 score. Necropolis made slow progress forward in the second half, although MB tomb guardian Kor-Than performed excellently, removing three Shard Warriors in four turns. An Alethkar wolf tried a run around to blitz the ball-carrier, but the 1d hit came up Skull reroll Skull, and Necropolis moved the ball into scoring distance. Alethkar's first hit of the next turn also found only Skulls. The Priest Kings stalled on the edge of the goal line. Alethkar got two players in contact with the ball-carrier on turn 7, but Necropolis was able to use a blitz to chain-push the ball-carrier into the end zone for the tie.

That's the line that'll mark the season for Tangueros. We are building. We will be strong next season (or the next Razz ).

That 6+ dodge -2d surf was awe inspiring.

Welcome to our first look at individual player achievements for this season! This feature will recognize individual player efforts throughout the season in several different categories - ones that more-or-less correspond to actual football stars. Regardless of how well or badly a team is doing, you could still see one of your players on these lists here. Now, as a disclaimer, though, I will mention that these lists do not in any way adjust for number of games played, so they may be a little weighted towards those teams that have already played their Week 5 or even Week 6 matches. That said - onward!

Quarterback - Passing yards + (2 * completions)

"Funky" Friedemann Friese of the Essen Exsanguinators leads this category with 8 completions for 33 yards, with his +AG and -MA both leading to some nice passing. Jenif McDowell of the White Rock Midnight is in second with more Cps but less yards, with 9 and 30, respectively, followed by Crimsonwolf II (9 Cps, 26 yards) of the Green Back Smackers . Honourable mention to Andy Kaufman of the Hollywood Roundup Gang (4, 30) for a very impressive average throw distance, although his recent injury will likely interfere with any challenge for dominance of this category.

Receiver - Total TDs (tiebreaker: total SPP)

Juan Manuel de Rosas II of the Argentinian Caudillos takes this category with 7 TDs so far, including four in one game. Chasing him are the incumbent winner Mr Boddy of the Winchester Wicked Wrongdoers and rising star Kryten from the Green Back Smackers, each with five.

Running Back - 5*TDs + Rushing Yards

Mr Boddy - the reigning champion in this category as well - is again leading it, with his league-topping 141 rush yards and his previously-mentioned 5 TDs putting him easily in the lead. TooCool ForGhoul (3 TDs, 121 rush) of the North West Walking Brawls and Larson the Claw (4, 99) of the Butte Kickers are second and third here.

Blocker - Most CAS (tiebreaker: least blocks)

Old One of the R'lyeh Regulars is making his mark in this category, as the only player in the NWFL with 7 CAS so far on the season, and he has done so in only 40 blocks. Brastock the Wicked (6 CAS, 44 blocks) of the Butte Kickers and Dana Wight (6 CAS, 51 blocks) of the North West Walking Brawls are the other standouts here.

MVP - Most SPP (tiebreaker: most MVPs)

Crimsonwolf II and Mr Boddy are tied for tops here, with both having 27 SPP and 2 MVP. Third is the league's newest Legend, Uwe "The Reaper" Rosenberg (26 SPP, 1 MVP) of the Essen Exsanguinators.

All Purpose - Cps, TDs, CAS (highest category counts normal, 2nd highest double, 3rd highest triple)

There was some debate last season about the best way to evaluate the best All Purpose player, and the rubric shown here is what I finally decided on, and will be using going forward. Crimsonwolf II (9 Cps, 2 TDs, 1 CAS) finds himself at the top here with 16 points, followed by Uwe "The Reaper" Rosenberg (1 Cps, 4 TDs, 4 CAS) with 15 and Jenif McDowell (9 Cps, 1 TD, 1 CAS) with 14. Special mention goes to the fifth place player, Martín Miguel de Güemes of the Argentinian Caudillos, who has two each of Completions, TDs, and CAS - the only player in the NWFL so far to have at least two of each.

Week 5
AWC South vs. NWC North

Detroit Delvers 1 - Nocturne Falls Honey Badgers 1

Nocturne Falls collected the ball and bashed, with the Delver apo going early. Detroit's star Boomer Eziasson knocked down several players on both teams before being taken down on a blitz. Detroit marked the ball-carrier, who snaked a dodge to dump the ball onto the field. A failed -2d block kept Detroit from taking advantage. Pouring Rain complicated Nocturne Falls' pickup attempt, with their ghoul bouncing the ball off another nearby Honey Badger before catching it. Boomer tried a couple times to knock the ball-carrier over, but he dodged both explosions, making it to the end zone on turn 7. Detroit could not move the ball up fast enough to score at the end of the half. Detroit failed a pickup at the start of their next drive, but made the next one, passing the ball forward and making GFIs to the goal line. A Honey Badger blitzed the ball-carrier down for a stun, but was in turn pushed into the corner by a blitzing troll slayer, and then out the next turn. The ball sat on the ground while this happened, with each side concentrating on the opposing players. A pickup was finally attempted by Detroit, but while the 6+ pickup was made in two TZs, the 3+ dodge away was failed through reroll. Stand Firm kept the nearby Honey Badgers from getting to the ball, though, and another was surfed the next turn. Nocturne Falls finally got more players in the area, and tried to keep Detroit away from the ball. Detroit went for it on turn 8, and found the no-reroll dodge and the Sure Hands 5+ pickup to draw the game.

AWC North vs. NWC South

White Rock Midnight 4 - New York Rats 1

White Rock collected the ball, but were put under pressure early. New York blitzed the ball free on turn 2, grabbing it out of midair, but White Rock got it back. They stalled for a turn, but a Rat managed to down the ball-carrier on a 1d to steal the ball. The Midnight knocked down and surfed several Rats, but could not get the ball back immediately. The New York ball-carrier was trapped in the end zone, though, and failed a dodge out, letting a Midnight pick the ball up to score. New York ran the ball in along the sideline, but White Rock dodged in to free it, and then passed it to the other side of the field. New York took down the ball-carrier, but the ball was caught by another Midnight, and it was relayed forward for a second score. New York made the most of the last turn of the first half, using Side Step to get a gutter runner into scoring distance, and making rolls to cut White Rock's lead to one. New York sent a Rat in deep with the ball in the second half, but he was taken down and stunned one step from the end zone. The ball changed hands several times, including being crowded across the field, but a failed dodge from New York and no Pows the turn after let White Rock score. New York's first hit of the next drive was Skulled, and White Rock stole the ball again for 4-1.

St. Luna Cardiac Cardinals 1 - Los Angeles Reapers 0

Los Angeles recruited Morg 'n' Thorg for what this reporter believes to be his first NWFL appearance of the season. The Reapers went All Mans LOS off Perfect Defence, but a Frenzy blitz and some Guard still gave St. Luna good blocks, ending with a successful -2d on Morg. It is easier to take chaos dwarves down than out, though, and the Reapers fought back, removing several Cardiac Cardinals from the field over the next turns and forcing St. Luna to retreat. A failed handoff let Los Angeles near the ball, and when St. Luna used Side Step to bounce it, it was caught in midair by Morg. A pair of 1d Pow/Pushes from St. Luna let them take down a nearby Reaper and then Morg, though, stunning both, and a Cardinal grabbed the ball and ran. He was taken down in turn. Los Angeles failed one pickup, but made one the next turn. LA tried passing downfield, getting some distance but leaving the ball exposed. St. Luna - out of rerolls - made some setup blocks, then made a zombie dodge and pickup, handed off to a wight, then GFI, GFI, 4+ pass, 3+ catch to get the touchdown. LA moved in slowly in the second half, outmuscling St. Luna and removing several Cardinals, but could not make progress without exposing the ball-carrier. They finally moved into scoring range on turn 7, but St. Luna knocked the ball free on a 1d blitz. A failed 2d block ate Los Angeles' reroll on turn 8, and the attempted AG2 dodge/handoff was not successful.

AWC West vs. NWC East

Lindisfarne Midnight Sons 2 - Surrey Serpents 0

Lindisfarne KO'd one Serpent on the line to start the game, but a failed Dauntless roll and failed 1d ended their first turn early. The Midnight Sons recovered well, though, KOing more sauri on the next couple turns, and moved the ball up in a cage. Lindisfarne got into scoring range, stalling on the goal line on turn 7. Surrey blitzed beside the ball-carrier with a pair of Serpents, but Lindisfarne arranged for a double surf, MNGing another saurus, and also killed a Block skink through apo before scoring. Two sets of KO rolls only gave Surrey back one of their KOs, leaving seven Serpents for the second half. They made a run for it, but failed the dodge to score, and Lindisfarne collected the ball, removing more Serpents from the field and getting an unopposed turn 8 TD.

Week 6
AWC South vs. NWC North

Butte Kickers 2 - Detroit Delvers 0

Butte started the beats, drawing the Delver apo on turn 2 to save their senior blitzer from an RIP. Detroit's induced bomber knocked over the ball-carrier on turn 2, and a troll slayer blitzed over and grabbed it. He was taken down in turn, and return hits also killed an Emerging Star Delver. A weird sequence ensued where Detroit threw a bomb that took down the ball-carrier, and the bouncing ball was caught by another Kicker... who then had to throw a bomb! This second bomb took down the new ball-carrier, and either as a result of the bug or as a response to it, Detroit's turn ended with no further actions. Butte knocked down several Delvers and got the ball back, blitzing the bomber down to try and prevent any further shenanigans. Detroit contained the Kickers near midfield for a turn, but tried a bomb at the start of the turn after, and that was intercepted and then dropped. Delvers falling over ended the Detroit turn and let Butte get the ball clear for a turn 8 TD. Detroit ran the ball up fast in the second half, but were quickly swarmed. A failed 1d block let the Kickers take out the ball-carrier, and a scrum developed, with Detroit coming out decidedly second-best. Butte took possession, and headed downfield to end the game with another turn 8 touchdown.

AWC North vs. NWC South

White Rock Midnight 1 - Cleveland Children 0

licker has given us an excellent writeup in the Game Comments, so I won't bother giving a play-by-play. I will point out that the second half could have turned out differently if Skitter Stab-Stab hadn't KO'd himself on a failed GFI, though, which really just illustrates licker's point about the dice. And the Samba Action Calculator tells me that Cleveland's chance of getting the ball on turn 7 of the first half was actually 8.323% - much higher than 1%, though still not likely. Wink

AWC West vs. NWC East

Slann Frogcisco 49ers 1 - B.Aires Tangueros 0

The Tangueros took possession and moved in. Slann Frogcisco's kroxigor T.O. blitzed his way in to mark the ball-carrier, forcing B.Aires to take him down and retreat, and a couple turns later he used Break Tackle to take down the ball-carrier. Slann Frogcisco failed the pickup, and B.Aires reclaimed it briefly, but T.O. again sprang the ball. A 49er got the ball this time, but failed a dodge on their way out. The Tangueros got the ball back and sent it forward, but Slann Frogcisco avoided 1s to first mark and then blitz down the ball-carrier, and a failed dodge the next turn from B.Aires ended the half with no score. The 49ers got the ball in the second half, but found themselves pressured early. The Tanguero minotaur blitzed the ball-carrier, but could not find a Pow, and the ball moved up more. The next blitz from B.Aires used Wrestle to spring the ball, but the pickup was dropped and Slann Frogcisco got the ball back. Wrestle again solved that, and both teams traded pickup fails for a bit. B.Aires finally got the ball, dodging away and making a Long Pass downfield to the waiting elf. Slann Frogcisco was able to GFI and blitz him down for a stun, getting the ball back, and got a couple players into scoring range, making multiple rolls including a 5+ pass with no rerolls the next turn in order to score. A kick to the very back of the playing field denied B.Aires any chance to tie the game.

Kansas Raptors 0 - Essen Exsanguinators 0

Kansas failed their first pickup attempt, but had screened the ball well enough that Essen couldn't get to it on their turn 1. The Raptors knocked a vampire down and fouled him into unconsciousness, but failed another pickup, and the Exsanguinators stole the ball. The Raptors found another Pow to down the ball-carrier, and fouled him for a KO as well. Hemlock grabbed the ball, but was Badly Hurt in response. The ball bounced into multiple Raptor TZs, and Kansas grabbed it, running for the other side of the field while continuing to KO Exsanguinators. Kansas stalled instead of taking the turn 6 score, and the last Essen vampire made dodges and a GFI to CAS the ball-carrier, catching the ball out of the air himself. Kansas could not take him down, and he held onto the ball as the half expired. Six of Essen's eight KOs came back, giving them almost a full squad for the second half, although a Rock stunned a vampire as the half got underway. A thrall fell back for the ball, but was marked as multiple Raptors came in to gang-foul the downed vamp. He ran forward, but Kansas sprang Slibli to take the ball-carrier down, and dodged skinks away to grab the ball and screen. Essen used Gazes to blitz the ball, knocking it free on a second attempt but failing the pickup. Kansas got to the ball but failed a pickup of their own; Essen likewise dropped the ball again on the next turn. Kansas settled in for a turn, putting multiple TZs on the ball, and a snaked dodge from Essen let them get the ball and run. An Exsanguinator chased down the ball-carrier, but without any MA left for the pickup. Kansas knocked down him down and got the ball, but failed a GFI out of easy blitz range, and an Exsanguinator again held on to the ball as time expired.

I put in 1% for the sum of all their actions, but I didn't check it, tackle zone pick ups, multiple dodges, long pass, catch...

Has to be less than 8% Smile

Just to get the ball and pass it up is higher, but he also made all his dodges/gfi to screen including vs. a diving tackle player.

I did it wrong. Should have taken the 2x GFI and 4+/2+ dodges to 3+/3+ the ball to the Blitzer, who would have run to safety. Intercept would have been 6+ rather than 5+, and the pass and catch would have been easier, with no dodge after. Second time this season I've whiffed on great dice. :/

We edge towards the end of the first half of the season, and the end of cross-conference play. Here are your latest recaps!

Week 6
AWC South vs. NWC North

Har Ganeth Korsairs 2 - Argentine Noldorins 2

The teams prepared to elf off in the Pouring Rain. Har Ganeth MNG'd two Noldorins and KO'd another on turn 1. Argentina consolidated their remaining forces near the centre of the field, allowing the Korsairs free access to the end zone. Har Ganeth moved towards the corner, but failed a pair of handoffs to get the ball to a rookie blitzer. The second failure bounced the ball to the outside of the Har Ganeth cage, and an AG5 Noldorin was able to grab it, passing it forward for a turn 6 score. Har Ganeth tried to put together a two-turn TD, but did not have the dice. Pitch Invasion started the second half by taking down nine players - five Korsairs, four Noldorins, despite Har Ganeth's FAME advantage. Argentina moved the ball in fast in a sideline cage, scoring when a Korsair couldn't find the 5+ dodge. The next kickoff gave Har Ganeth a touchback, and they moved the ball up fast, but using the ball-carrier to assist a foul left him vulnerable, and he was taken down and the ball stolen. Har Ganeth was able to reclaim it on the return hit, though, and when Argentina could only Push the ball-carrier on their next turn, the Korsairs scored to make it 2-1. The weather cleared up for the next drive, but Har Ganeth's KOs continued to stay down. Argentina moved the ball up near the sideline, and this time the 5+ dodge came home for Har Ganeth, with a blitzing witch elf surfing the ball-carrier. Har Ganeth had a player available to collect the ball, passing it forward to a waiting Korsair. Noldorins were just able to catch him and take him down, but his armour was not broken, and the ball bounced towards the end zone and away from the Noldorins. Har Ganeth was able to dodge away the next turn, grab the ball, and tie the game. Argentina took their frustrations out on the Korsairs on the last turn, but had to settle for a tie.

AWC North vs. NWC South

Vancouver Rot-Nucks 1 - Los Angeles Reapers 0

Vancouver got a Blitz and caught the ball despite the Pouring Rain. Los Angeles knocked it out of their hands, but failed the pickup. The fight over the ball continued, but the Reapers were unable to knock down the Rot-Nuck beast to clear the centre of the field. A failed dodge by a Reaper persuaded Los Angeles to send in their wizard, Badly Hurting one pestigor and knocking down two others. Vancouver was kept away from the ball, but Los Angeles could not claim it themselves. It bounced around several times, finally being successfully taken by a Rot-Nuck on turn 6. They ran it back to safety, but Skulls ended a turn before they could get to scoring distance, and the game went to the second half at 0-0. The weather cleared for Vancouver, who collected the ball. The beast going Stupid gave Los Angeles an easy 2d blitz on the ball-carrier, but they could only Push. Return hits from Vancouver killed a two-skill bull centaur, and the Rot-Nucks broke into the open, taking a turn 7 score. A Riot took away LA's already small chance to score.

New York Rats 3 - Joplin Disasters 1

Joplin took to the field with both big guys sitting the game out. Their induced chainsaw did not last long, failing to break armour against the New York rat ogre, then being KO'd by him on the return hit. Joplin moved the ball forward, surviving a 1d blitz from a gutter runner, but the rat ogre took the ball-carrier down the next turn, and New York grabbed the ball. Their ball-carrier was downed in turn for an MNG. Joplin failed a pickup. New York's attempt to snag the ball failed a dodge, but Joplin again could not collect the ball, and a Rat grabbed it, punting to the back corner. Joplin put enough bodies between the Rats and the ball that they could not make the next pickup, and Joplin got the ball back to half. New York again took down the ball-carrier, though, and when Joplin failed a GFI to get to the ball, New York transferred it forward to score on turn 8. The Rats led off the second half with a OTT thanks to an MA10 gutter runner. Joplin stayed caged while moving in in the second half, and a failed New York block finally got them through for 2-1. New York had two turns left to score, which turned out to be plenty for three gutter runners.

AWC East vs. NWC West

Winchester Wicked Wrongdoers 2 - Stone City SkullCrushers 1

Stone City induced multiple extra team rerolls, but still declined to reroll a failed 1d on turn 1. Winchester broke into the backfield, marking the ball. SkullCrushers took that Wrongdoer down, grabbed the ball, and passed it forward, also using a lightning bolt to MNG a nearby unmarked hobgoblin. Winchester sent a bull centaur back to mark the ball-carrier, but he snaked a GFI to Badly Hurt himself, and Stone City took the lead. Winchester started their own drive, but failed a pair of pickups. Stone City finally used a reroll on their turn 5 as they stole the ball, but they failed the dodge away to dump it back onto the turf. A Wicked Wrongdoer finally grabbed the ball, but Stone City took him down with a 1d to reclaim the ball themselves. Winchester's remaining bull centaur, Mr Boddy, sprang it again, but failed yet another pickup. A SkullCrusher tried to grab the ball and get away, but ran afoul of Mr Boddy's Diving Tackle. The Wicked Wrongdoers got possession near the end of the half, but failed the desperation 6+ pass to have a chance of scoring. A touchback to start the second half meant Winchester didn't have to worry about pickups for a while. The Wrongdoers punched in through the Stone City lines, MNGing their ogre, and Mr Boddy blitzed a path through to score after the one hit on him came up Skull reroll Skull. Winchester Kicked the ball back into the Stone City end zone. The SkullCrushers moved up, but found themselves outmuscled, and Winchester took down their ball-carrier. Stone City tried to reclaim it, but the pickup failed, and the ball bounced into the crowd and directly to a Wrongdoer. Winchester promptly made for the end zone, and Diving Tackle kept Stone City from getting in their way.
