I think the biggest shock of last round was the Vagabonds hangover continuing with a second loss of the season, against Sylvania Rising. No disrespect to easilyamused, but the vampires have really been thrown in at the deep end this season, and are the smallest team by far. To have beaten last season's Cup winners 2-0 is quite an achievement.

It looks like the Barak Varr Goldlords' record of being the only team to win two cups in a row might be safe this season (although it is too early to rule anything out completely).

I don't think anyone was more surprised than me by the result last night.

After being thrown under the horse and carriage this season with an unexpected promotion the goal was just to try and get some SPP's and try to keep the team in some kind of shape.

After getting ripped apart by woodies in the first game of the season the vamps were out to try and save face. And boy did they do it. I think there was 1 hypno failed all game and only about 3 or 4 bloodlust rolls.

CD's next.....

Despite everything, Expatriates shut out Pirates 2-0 in Game 3, making the only undefeated teams and clear leaders in both conferences Lizards (as it should be!).

With 2 games to be played, it's the Conference leaders holding their own destiny, and everyone else scrambling for a seat when the music stops.

In Albion, the Diseased Wasters win to go 2-1-0 and take sole ownership of 2nd, with the Pirates and Lahmia U. (and possibly more, tbd) 1-1-1 teams behind them, altho' if the Delta Dogs win they'll take sole possession of 3rd place at 1-2-0. Go DD!

In Bretonia, it's another dog fight but a similar story, with the Serpents undefeated and clear in the lead. For the moment, Athel Lorien has 2nd with a record of 2-0-1, but if either the Lumberjacks or Faraohs win their separate games, either or both could pass them by going to 2-1-0. And their opponents all sit at 1-0-1, so if either of those win they move up to tie with AL, making it (at least!) a 5-way fight for 3rd-7th.

In both Conferences, it's looking like 3-1-1 could be enough, and perhaps more than enough, for the post-season, meaning that teams with records that usually would already put them out of the running still have a shot if they can turn the last part of the season around!

As a footnote, newcomer and pre-season underdog Sylvania Rises ties Frostheim U and looks to be in 5th at the end of Game 3, within striking distance of the ragged pack of leaders! Go SR!

In a hectic first half the Lumberjacks blitz the Diadochi to score an early TD. In the following elf drive they steal the ball but get suckerpunched by the wizard, who injures two, KO's one and stuns a player. Only the ballcarrier is left standing and he survives a lot of dice, pulls of an amazing -2D blitz only to finally get punched down a square away from the endzone. A quick reverse from the elves leaves it 1-1 at halftime.
As entertaining as the first half was for the spectators, the 2nd half sees an unleashed norse team, almost every elf that's hit get's KO'd and despite a lategame -2D takedown on the ballcarrier, the remaing 3 elves can't get to the ball and it's walked in turn 16 for the 2-1 victory.

Next up: Lizards!

The pillars couldn't do it against the godlords tonight. Not really a great game to watch I wasn't really into it and once it was over nuffle didn't allow fun plays Very Happy
The nasty shortlegs are back in the race for post season, the dusty bones will try to build up the team during the end of the season.

Dark Crag Cripplers rematch against the Dark Land Predators.

This match also took hours, even days to complete.
Five guard and against none and seven tackle to negate the elves dodge.
The Cripplers stalled the Predators first half drive but in the end a simple 4+ 3+ pair of dodges saw the Predators home on the last turn of the half.
An equaliser came after four turns, but the elves were out of rerolls and it was another simple td for a well-deserved win. 2-1 to the Predators.

I'm sure others in the league will have ideas on how to play when outnumbered and constantly based by dwarves with guard-mb-tackle. I would be interested to hear them.

Seventh time in the last 12 games in which the elves caused no casualties whatsoever.

Two games left to be played in Round 3, and with only 2 Rounds to go after this both of these games have significance for post-season.

In Albion, the Scalded Delta Dogz face off against turov's infected. If ti wins, they join a looong list of teams tied for 3rd at 1-1-1 (they'd make #5!), but SDD has battled for ties both games so far, so if they win they go to 1-2-0 - and, shockingly, would own 3rd place! A tie would put SDD into that same 5-way conga-line for 3rd, as 0-3-0 is the same point standing as 1-1-1.

As the top teams continue to upset each other, the dogfight is only slightly less brutal in Bretonnia, with 2 teams in 3rd at 2-0-1 and another 2 behind them at 1-1-1, but still within striking distance. (I ~think~ even 1-0-2 is not mathematically out of it in either Conference with a potential final record of 3-0-2, but it would take some doing!) With only 2 games to go, it's "do or die" for all these hopefuls.

In Kislev, the BloodLords of Sylvania cross the Charnel Valley Chargers. If they win they move up (Bloodlords to 2nd, CVC to own 3rd), but a loss would push either toward the very basement, and a tie would make moving up post-season very difficult.

To all teams, no bad luck, may the better coach/team win, and work on those tie-breaker points - looks like many are going to need them!

Well, both those last 2 games were disappointment, but not in the usual way - neither were played.

In Albion, Coach The_Demon had a chance to pass 5 teams and pull into 3rd place with a win, but since the Delta Dogs were given the loss, it seems they thought that just wasn't worth the effort, apparently.

In Kislev, the stakes were not as high, but it seems a similar story with Prinz11, who was given the loss without trying for 2nd place.

What's up, guys? ;(

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyway...
With only 2 games to go and a Lizard team the only undefeated team in both Leagues, the bye is theirs to lose, while for a record number of others it's dogfight for the post-season.
In Albion, the 3-0 New Bretonnia Expatriates face the Might-Blow-heavy 2-1-0 Diseased Wasters (who hold the higher Tie-Breaker points!) to see who sits in 1st going in to the final game, altho' the Expats can't drop lower than a solo 2nd place if they lose. And the five(!) 1-1-1 teams in 3rd place all (probably*) need to win it to stay in it - Barak Varr Goldlords v. Uzkulak Pirates, turov's infected v. Dark Lands Predators, and Lahmia Undead United face the 0-2-1 Scalded Delta Dogz (if they show up, ahem).
(* It's not impossible that a 2-2-1 record could squeak in to 3rd for the post-season, a League-record poor finish for that slot, but exactly the right combination of other teams would have to win/lose.)
In Bretonnia, a similar story, but with the pack closer on the heels of the leaders. 3-0 Serpents Coast Scavengers v. 2-1-0 Nilfheim Lumberjacks for lead going into the final game. Two 2-0-1 teams, Athel Loren v. Elves of Albion to see who elf-balls better - and a win could mean 2nd place going in to the last game. And the two 1-1-1 teams are not out of it - a win in the Arkhan Faraohs v. Sylvania Rises game could poise one team for the post-season, as 3-1-1 could be just enough if the right teams lose.
On the bottom end of the scale, 0-0-3 Malice of Karond need to step up their game if they are not to be relegated. They had some tough matches to start and almost stopped the undefeated Scavengers before they go started in Week 1 (losing 1-0). But this week's game will be no picnic against Frostheim United, unexpectedly sitting on the bottom bubble along with the other 0-1-2 basement teams who face off in Albion, Pillars of Nagash and Dark Crag Cripplers. C'mon guys, show us what you got!
And in Kislev, it's still a horse-race to see who moves up. With a 2-1-0 record, only Commish gjopie's #1 Gotland Gorers hold their own destiny as they face #4 Charnel Valley Chargers, whose 1-2-0 record is not (yet) a dealbreaker - 3-2-0 could win the League with cooperation from exactly the right combination of other wins/ties/losses. With different records but currently tied for 2nd, the 1-2-0 Karak Hirn Hammers FC face the 2-0-1 Lagoon of Tears, each knowing that they need a win to keep them high in the hunt.
As always, to all - no bad luck, may the better coach/team win!
Dark Crag Cuddlers vs Lahmia Undead United
The elves received, but not before United had had a blitz. The elves recovered and moved downfield. An attempt to stall failed to quad-skulls. An attempt to retrieve the ball failed to dub-skulls. Four fouls went unnoticed even as players left the pitch. Four GFIs in two turns were all that was needed for the Undead defensive score.
The elves kicked off the second half down a touchdown and three players.
Tackle was neither present nor needed on the United team as they quickly pow'd their way to a 6 man advantage.
Gradually they ambled around the field removing elven players at will, surrounding their blodging-sidestepping ball carrier with guard and waiting for a turn 15 score.
The elves got the kick-off on turn 16 and the witch promptly dub-skulled to bring a fitting close to the game.
The Cuddlers lived up to their new nickname refusing to inflict even as much as a ko. The sole undead player to leave the field did so after his own dub-skull.
Well played by SzieberthAdam, another poor performance from the elf coach.
Smeat asked us to "show us what you got", well, I got nothing.
More than a couple big games already played in Round 4, most all in Bretonnia...
At the top of the heap, the Lumberjacks unseated the previously undefeated Scavengers in a brutal match where only a handful of players (and no skinks!) saw the final score, but not before losing their St 5(!) 'Zerk, Battle-axe Nielson. That moves the 'Jacks up into 1st in Bretonnia going in to the last round, 3-1-0, and the Scavengers hold 2nd by themselves, 3-0-1. Both teams have multiple key players MNG going in to the final game, and will have their work cut out for them as neither has the tie-breaker points for a guarantee to the post-season. Only the 'Jacks hold their own destiny - a win and they've got the bye, a tie gets them no worse than 2nd place guaranteed, and even a loss may not keep them out of the post-season, depending on tie-breakers.
(Also, in previous posts, we've claimed Lizards as the only 2 "undefeated" teams. In fact, they were the only teams with "perfect" records - the Lumberjacks had one tie but were also, and continue to be "undefeated" - apologies and Respect to them!)
Of the 4 teams that had been on their heels (in varying degrees) going in to this round, both of the 2-0-1 Elf-pair failed to take advantage of the opportunity to move into a tie for 2nd place. Athel Loren tossed a tie into the jaws of defeat Turn 15, but the Elves of Albion coughed that gift back out again to allow the T16 tie, and that keeps them both 2-1-1, mid-pack and a full game out of 1st, joining a 3-way scramble for 3rd for post-season.
The 1-1-1 Faraohs stepped up and, with some strong defense (and a T8 -2d block for the defensive score!), shut out Sylvania Rises, and joined the two 2-1-1 Elf teams in the race as, in fact, 3-1-1 will be enough for the post-season (and could be enough for TWO teams ~if~ the Serpents lose again!).
The last game was the fight out of the Bretonnia basement, and Malice of Karond Kar enjoyed a KO'd Bull Turn 1 and productive 1d Blitzes for a defensive Turn 8 score and the win, leaving Frostheim United a half-game behind them and on the bottom.
That leaves two 1-0-2 teams, Palinam Diadochi vs. Wasteland Vagabonds, to battle for an outside chance* at sneaking in to 3rd with a league all-time-low 3-0-2 record. But it all starts again in the post-season - in and all is forgotten, anything becomes possible again.
(* If Athel Loren AND Faraohs lose and drop to 2-1-2, then 3-0-2 is in! And if the Scavengers lose and drop to 3-0-2, then it's up to the TB points.)
    Bretonnia Round 5 (partial) Preview!
        #1 Nilfheim Lumberjacks 3-1-0 (+7.5)
        ~ vs. ~
        #3 Athel Loren BBoDT 2-1-1 (+6.5)
        #2 Serpents Coast Scavengers 3-0-1 (+2.5)
        ~ vs. ~
        #4 Arkhan Faraohs 2-1-1 (+3)
        #5 Elves of Albion 2-1-1 (-1)
        ~ vs. ~
        #6 ? (winner of PD v. Vagabonds game, or more TB points* if tie!)
          * Palinam Diadochi 1-0-2 (0)
          * Wasteland Vagabonds 1-0-2 (-.5)
In Albion, the only game to have been played so far was out of the basement (described above). The Wasters v. Expats game has yet to be scheduled, and the rest...? Have to wait and see!
In Kislev, no Round 4 action yet. 4 teams, 3 of them tied and behind the leader by only 1 pt, all seem poised for the final push into the upper conferences: #1 Gotland Gorers(2-1-0, +3.5)play #4 Charnel Valley Chargers (1-2-0, +1), and #2 Karak Hirn Hammers FC (1-2-0, +3) go against #3 Lagoon of Tears (2-0-1, +3). (Not mathematically impossible for a lower team to jump to first, but heavily odds-against at this point.)
As always, to all - no bad luck, may the better coach/team win![/quote]
Nice writeup Smeat!
The Lumberjacks vs Scavengers match started off completely in favor of the norse, but a snaked catch on the (unnecessary) handoff in turn 8 of the game made the 2nd half still anyone's game. Especially when the star of the team was killed by the Krox who'd been brought back by the apo. The Lumberjacks apo was too nervous and botched the job. In the end the last few skinks were removed and with quite a bit of luck the remaining Lumberjacks walked snatched it up for the win.
Battle-Axe Nielson will be sorely missed, rarely has there been such a player to grace a norseteam. However sometimes a star must die to make place for new talent and the new guys are straining at the bit to bring the 2nd 'jacks conferencewin home.
Despite their little advantage at the end of the game the pillars couldn't score better than a draw... that's it for the post season, at least there is still a chance not to get kicked out of the top conferences.
Nuffle was tough on both of us during this game allowing very little fantasy and making us nervous for every move...
Well played The_deamon
Indeed, an interesting season this one. I've only been paying minor attention to the big leagues, due to being exiled in Kislev for the time being, but it looks like a lot of teams will have a chance going into the final game.
In Kislev, the Gotland Gorers have been somewhat lucky to remain undefeated. They were incredibly lucky with their early skill rolls, which was both a blessing and a curse as they have given up sizeable inducements in all their games so far, but go into the final two games confidant with their destiny in their own hands. There have been a lot of draws so far (5/15 games), which means a few teams can still get in to the promotion spots. And remember, we may be promoting more than expected, so it is always worth fighting for 5th and 6th places!
(I also want to defend The_Demon's honour somewhat: the forfeited game in the last round went to a coin toss, as neither coach could find a suitable overlap in their availabilities, nor did it look like they would any time soon.)
The Delta Dogz v. Pillars game was hard fought and started evenly matched, tied at the end of the first half. Then the Pillars kicked and applied strong pressure all half, taking Dogz' players out and keeping the Dogz on their heels and finally, Turn 6, forcing a failed dodge that sent the ball into their own backfield. But with only 3 Turns to go and their last RR spent on recovering the ball, Ag 2 failed the cointoss handoff for the walk-in defensive score, and that was the tie.
Bretonnia update!...
          * Palinam Diadochi 1-0-2 (0)
          * Wasteland Vagabonds 1-0-2 (-.5)
The Vags ground out a 1st half tie against their opponent's air game, then declined to stall and scored Turn 5 in the 2nd half. They barely avoided losing the win, but Palinam Diadochi failed the gfi for the T5 OTS tying score (playing for the short-handed win, apparently?). Regardless of coach motivations, that means #6 Wasteland Vagabonds (2-0-2, +1.5) can play spoiler to the #5 Elves of Albion (2-1-1, -1) in Round 5.
It also means that the Bretonnia basement will be decided by a repeat* grudgematch, Frostheim United seeking redemption against Malice of Karond Kar for last week's defeat.
(* This happens in Swiss seeding sometimes. Swiss sorts from top to bottom, so when the bottom teams have lost repeatedly and all the teams above them sort against each other first - then the last teams are stuck with each other again.)
