The dense and impenetrable jungle had given way somewhat and the sunlight felt very welcome on the backs of the Sun Gods as they made their way onwards. Xholmundi and Kailoq nursed their wounds under the gaze of their temple priest who had been ministering to them since their last encounter.

"Let us be at Hexoatl soon" grumbled Xholmundi, nursing his broken jaw. "We cannot be far away". The temple priest nodded and as they reached the crest of a low hill they saw it before them.

Hexoatl.

The glory of the Slann and Lizardmen was on full display in the glorious midday sun. The ancient architecture gleamed and radiated a sense of majesty and permanence. Having withstood disasters, setbacks and sieges over the many moons of its existence, the capital of the Old Ones still was a proud bastion and magnet to the ambitious and the chosen. A massive city, it was testament to the Great Plan that, while slow to mature, was surely to be found correct in the end. And the Sun Gods would soon find their place as but a part of that monumental endeavour aeons in the making.

As they began their descent into the valley they made their way to a small collection of dwellings that marked one of the myriad of smaller settlements dotting the landscape. It was good to be back among their kind and the energy was palpable as they strolled down the main path towards the glorious metropolis.

As usual, word had preceded them and they found themselves pressed into a match against some eager young Lizardmen who were preparing to make their way to Hexoatl as well.

The Lizardmen won the toss and decided to receive the ball. The Sun Gods set up in their usual formation with some trepidation as they were missing their captain and spiritual leader as well as the wily and enigmatic Kailoq. The ball was kicked deep and play began in front of a small but vocal crowd.

The Lizardmen made their move early attempting to pin the Sun Gods back while their skinks recovered the ball. As the Sun Gods moved, Xholtoc rushed forwards and with a practiced blow smashed a Saurus to the ground who would take no further part. With the tables now turned, the Sun Gods committed their resources forwards. An unlucky dodge by a small skink led to the Sun Gods having nothing in between them and the ball carrier early in the half. Could they wrest the ball free?

Xholtoc made his way forwards again and caused another injury and the ball bounced free. Unfortunately it bounced to an open position where there was a risk that the ball may be recovered. After some attempts at securing the ball by both sides, the Sun Gods held the ball deep in their attacking half through Zlatoatl. The Lizardmen pressed hard with their skinks doing the grunt work. And yet, with the ball marked by two skinks, Chimazda collected the ball and with impossible grace he leaped free and streaked into the endzone to make it 1-0 to the Sun Gods.

As time wound down the ball was in a shallow position and the Sun Gods swarmed, darting this way and that, in an attempt to snaffle the ball again, however the leap by Chimazda was unsuccessful and the ball remained where it was. Most of the players by now surrounded it and it would take something special to knock it loose. Tihex was hit hard by a young Saurus who bellowed in triumph as the veteran Sun God was taken from the field.

As the end of the half was near Chimazda was stripped of the ball with a vicious hit and the Sun Gods watched aghast as a particularly nimble skink dodged his way through the scrum and managed to get the ball to a waiting teammate who took the ball in for a score as time ran out. Xholtoc managing to remove yet another player in the last few blocks. His blood was up and the enthusiasm was cresting. Could the Sun Gods take a victory here? Time would tell...

The Sun Gods received and got into position. A low chanting filled the air and the crowd parted to see another temple priest rocking back and forth muttering as a nimbus of light crackled around him. Xholmundi was horrified on the sidelines as the implications of magic went through the crowd like an electric current. As a fireball slammed home the Sun Gods were relieved to see no one hurt and only one player down. Chimazda was still protected.

As the Lizardmen managed to start overwhelming the Sun Gods, Chimazda decided discretion was the better part of valour. Seeing Hextep deep and unmarked he leaped over the defensive line and handed it off. Hextep, elated, ran the ball in for his first ever score and it stood at 2-1 early in the second half.

As the Lizards received again, the two mighty Kroxigors faced off. The Lizard seemed to forget what he was doing but managed to recover and knock Mundiconqua out! This would make things awfully difficult for the suddenly undermanned Slann. And so it was. The advantage was pressed and the Lizardmen broke into the backfield on some excellent blocking. Unable to withstand the onslaught the Sun Gods found themselves unable to reach the ball carrier with very little time remaining.

Cuaqli made a valiant attempt to blitz the ball carrier but was unable to get to grips with it. And the Lizardmen scored to make it 2-2. The Sun Gods had one chance to try and score in their only remaining turn.

Sadly for the Sun Gods their plan were for naught. A quick blitz by the Lizardmen managed to receive the ball and made it look like a horror loss may be on the cards. Thoughts of victory went out the window as the Slann were content to bring down the audacious skink and keep the score level. Tihex took the honours as the man of the match and the players gratefully congratulated each other and went on their separate ways.

The Sun Gods had a date with destiny to keep and they did not intend to miss it.

The Sun Gods were strolling along enjoying the kind weather that was warm and inviting. The gentle breeze that whispered through the trees was a pleasant counterpoint to the companionable silence that endured while the team made their way along.

Their reverie was broken as they saw a squad of Lizardmen hurrying up the path towards the undergrowth which led to the rainforest they had just made their way out of. The Sun Gods tagged along as the squad broke into the sudden gloom. The commander of the detachment filled them in as they ran. There had been word of mysterious warriors waylaying travellers just short of the great citadel of the Slann and the detachment had been sent to try and investigate. The team offered their services and the two groups split up to assess the situation.

Some time later, the Slann were silently making their way towards a fork in the path when they felt they were being watched. As they were on the alert a spear whistled through the air and embedded itself in a tree just above Mundiconqua's head who roared with displeasure. A bloodcurdling war cry answered and almost immediately the Slann found themselves surrounded by what appeared to be warrior women. "Who dares defile our sacred groves?" demanded their leader. "We were making our way to Hexoatl and were asked to see who was attacking defenceless travellers" the players replied.

"Who are you?"

"We are the chosen of our tribes" the Amazon replied. drawing herself up to her full height. "We defend our sacred places from intruders. We only wish to be left alone". Xholmundi considered this. "Well. This land has old pathways through it that we must traverse in order to connect our temples and cities" he said. "How about we have a friendly match and consider what we may do regarding this situation?".

The Amazon considered this. "Very well. We put this to you. If you are to win, then you may pass without let or hindrance. However, should we be victorious you shall provide notice to your leaders of times and places we shall accept trespass on our territory."

Xholmundi agreed and the game began...

The Amazons received and the match quickly developed into a midfield tussle. The Amazon players shocked the Slann with their ability to dodge away from their attempts to being them to bear and it was a struggle to keep them where they wanted them. The were moving from side to side on the pitch, attempting to create an overload where they could gain an advantage. In quick succession they knocked out Tihex and Kailoq which left the Sun Gods short manned in their defensive efforts. The Sun Gods continued to attempt to mark the Amazon players but it was proving most difficult.

The Amazons broke free down the left side of the field with a mysterious player showing the same sort of flexibility as any good Slann catcher and leaping over defensive positions to bring a unique kind of pressure. A failed blitz and the Slann were in trouble. The nearest players were stunned and their seemed to be no stopping the drive by this point. And so it proved with the Amazons scoring with a short period left in the half.

The Slann received and moved into a well rehearsed routine. Chimazda sat deep with the ball out of reach of a blitz. Once there were players free, he leaped forwards and handed off to Kailoq who ran forward and flicked the ball to Zlatoatl who required no further encouragement to run the ball in for a score.

1-1 at half time with the Sun Gods to receive.

The kick was perfect. It lay in the very far corner and the Sun Gods had it all to do. Chimazda managed to link up with his compatriots and they tried to take advantage of an opening down the left. They set up their screen and were in a reasonable position to retain the ball however the evil witch was able to leap in and, whilst overcome with frenzied rage, knocked Chimazda off the field where he would take no further part in the drive. A helpful spectator threw the ball as far as he could in the other direction leaving the Sun Gods stunned and bereft of confidence.

The Sun Gods recovered but they were clearly shaken. They were making mistakes and, it seemed, luck was conspiring against them. They tried leaping and crashed to the ground, blocking was ineffective and, throughout it all, the witch was lurking. Ready for the smallest mistake. The all changed hands a few times but the Sun Gods went into their last turn being unable to score, but hopefully able to prevent the Amazons doing so as well.

Would it be enough? Had they managed to salvage a result?

No they hadn't. Xholmundi's dodging ability was useless as he received a straight shot to knock him out and the ball to drop free. Meanwhile Uaxtoc was also knocked out by the Amazons. The Slann bemoaned the fact that they had not been able to remove a single player at any point from the game. But the Gods liked to test their devotees on occasion and they may yet be able to prevent the go ahead score.

Sadly, the witch ruined things for the Sun Gods. Her ridiculous grace and ability to move as if there was no one around proved crucial. The Amazons ran the ball in and the match finished. The Sun Gods promised that would pass on the Amazon wishes to Hexoatl and the two teams departed in even spirits. The Sun Gods knew improvement was necessary and swore that they would not be found wanting. With steely resolve, they returned to the path and began to retrace their steps.

"We meet again" said a familiar voice as the team made their way through the outskirts of Hexoatl. The players looked down to see a grinning Halfling looking up at them, a twinkle in it's eye. "Been watchin you" he said. "Looking pretty handy at the Blood Bowl lark and we thought you might want to reacquaint yourselves as it were...", Mundiconqua roared and the rest of the squad laughed as the group mingled, shaking and catching up on events that had transpired. "It has been a long time" said Xholmundi. "Aye, that it has. Now, we hear that you have a big meetin' lined up and thought you might like a match. We are gonna be stayin' here for a bit as we are interested in what you fellas are gonna be up to next." Xholmundi smiled and a clear area was rapidly set up for the old friends to play each other again.

A large crowd gathered as Xholmundi won the toss and decided to kick. "Kick?" said Kailoq, "Why are we kicking yet again?". The players listened as Xholmundi set out the plan. "We wish to get on top as early as we can. If we can turn over the ball to our control, we can score early getting the crowd on our side and increasing pressure. Also we can... ummm... What is that smell?" The players gazed across the field where a massive cauldron had been set up and one of the Halflings was feverishly stirring. "Ah. I see you have noticed our cook." said the Halflings as a deep rumble came from one of the trees. "You'd be surprised how distracting a good chef can be. Also, we got ourselves a wizardy type. Let's see how you fellas go against all these little problems." He laughed again and the teams set up to begin.

The Sun Gods were quick out of the blocks and were on the kick before the Halflings had even moved. Deciding to cause as many issues as possible, they marked up their opponents and awaited their reply. The Halflings were into their routine, scrambling between legs, dodging around and generally moving towards the ball. Ale Flowinghair attempted to move and was brought down by a magnificent diving tackle that put the Sun Gods on top. Xholmundi got control of the ball and things were looking up early. Loco Shroom got free and attempted a blitz. Sadly he didn't get his technique right and was badly hurt. An apothecary ran out and patched him up but it made for an opening that the Sun Gods intended to exploit to the fullest.

After some inconsequential blocking and a cheeky foul, Xholtoc ran the ball in to make it 1-0 halfway through the first half. The Halflings, concerned with the ability of the Slann to leap caged up rapidly and the Sun Gods attempted a blitz. Leaping into the middle of the Halflings, he reached for the ball carrier but fell, leaving the Sun Gods hopelessly out of position.

The players watched as one of the massive trees picked up the ball carrier who soared, screaming with glee, over the makeshift line. His cries were cut short as he landed heavily and the ball popped free from his prone form. Uaxtoc badly hurt one of his markers and the ball was picked up by Zlatoatl who positioned himself deep in the Sun Gods half searching for an open player. He was blasted by a wizard leaving the pitch, rapidly followed by Loco Shroom who landed on his head from being thrown and badly broke his jaw. Kailoq recovered the ball and Xholmundi smashed another marker to the ground removing him from the game. The game was getting messy now and Tenqhex was fouled out by a mass effort. Still, the Sun Gods had the ball and were looking for a commanding lead. Could it be done?

Yes it could. A great pass from Uaxtoc to Xholtoc and the Sun Gods were away with no one to stop the young blitzer from getting his second on the stroke of halftime.

By now the Mighty Blowflies were struggling for numbers and the Sun Gods sensed they had a great opportunity. But they were lazy. Tenqhex dropped an easy pass from Chimazda and the mighty Splint Greasewood badly injured Mundiconqua with the massive lizard being taken from the field with a fractured leg. This was followed up by Xholmundi being obliterated by Lone Pine who sent him to the injury box for treatment. The Sun Gods tried again and this time Tenqhex had the ball. But the Halflings weren't finished! They kept removing players with Goqhui being the next to be sent off the field on a stretcher. Discretion being the better part of valour, Tenqhex strolled in with the ball to the endzone to allow a brief respite for the Sun Gods in turn 4 of the second half.

The Halflings went into their well practiced routine and scored immediately through the amazingly agile Shroom. 3-1 was the score now and time was running low. The Sun Gods considered that they should try and retain the ball and bring the match to its conclusion. Both teams struggling for numbers now, the Halflings made the most of their blitz but Chimazda was able to find Kailoq on the other flank and passed the ball to him. Under pressure, Xholtoc streaked to the endzone and screamed for the pass. He was rewarded with a perfect spiral being thrown from Kailoq. The score 4-1 and one turn to go, the Sun Gods were pleased with their performance and setup deep in their own half to avoid any calamity.

The game ended with Tenqhex being badly hurt by a tree after some fancy work had allowed the Sun Gods to retain possession to end the scoring.

Afterwards, the Halflings and Sun Gods walked together, pleased with a well played match that had something for everyone. "You know..." said Uaxtoc, "You little men hit very hard!". Everyone laughed and a spirit of camaraderie permeated the interaction between the two. "Aye, that we do" said Shroom, "What we wanna know now is where you fellas are goin' next. We find youse such great entertainment and we wanna know what our itinerary be lookin' like".

At this a silence fell, and both Slann and Halfling looked up. There it was, the temple of Mazdamundi sitting and brooding on top of the massive and ancient ziggurat that dominated the skyline. After an involuntary shiver, Xholmundi nodded.

"Yes. But soon all shall be revealed" he said as a massive strike of lightning split the sky.

Xhotl Sun Gods 4-1 Mighty Blowflies
