It just struck me like a lightning that I may have gotten some basic thing about the wizard wrong: I always assumed that any player within the nine squares of a fireball is hit by it (or at least if the coach with the wiz succeeds the 4+ roll), no matter if standing or prone.

Now the rules (from the FUMBBL inducement list) say:
"Roll one dice to hit each standing player (from either team) that is either in the target square or a square adjacent to it. If the 'to hit' roll is a 4 or more then the target is Knocked Down. [...] Make an Armour roll (and possible Injury as well) for any player that is Knocked Down as if they had been Knocked Down by a player with the Mighty Blow skill."

Are prone players (no matter the team, obviously) ignored?!

I know I've sometimes not thrown a fireball because one of my own player could have potentially been hit...

As far as I understood it cowards hiding on the floor are immune from fireballs. Makes no sense fluffwise of course.

The fireball explodes a bit higher than the ground, that's why prone players are all fine.

The best fireball is where they put eight guys, one with the ball, around your Wardancer to foul him. They get a stun, and then your fireball puts five of them off the pitch.

Prone players are ignored. It's an air burst.

Easy way to remember - it's the opposite of a bomb.

Prone for a bomb - auto-hit, prone for a ball, auto-miss.

Hmm ... I think we need a little rhyme to help with this:

Prone for a bomb,
You haven't got long.
Prone for a flame,
You're still in the game!

How's that? Razz

Thanks for the clarification!

So, best move would be to throw a fireball against a group of opposed players at the beginning of my turn, blitz someone else in/down and then throw a bomb at the lot. Very Happy

I've done that a handful of times - it's never as awesome as imagined but it does put the fear in the opposing coach for a turn or two
