Hello,

I was recently reading the strategy guide for goblins on FUMBBL and it mentions "Caging, Boxing and Screening." Caging and screening I think I understand, but what exactly is boxing and how is it different than caging?

At a guess "boxing" may be a defensive strategy where you restrict the areas of the pitch the other team can move into, thus boxing them in.

Tradtionally the box is the four corner grid around the ball carrier. I think that has had its day as the best strategy out there tbh, although it remains effective in some situations.

Hmm, that is a cage surely. 4 players around ball carrier.
The boxing an area in defence makes sense.

A cage has gaps but is still hard to get into. A box has no gaps.

It is used more by fast and agile teams... sometimes used if they intend to Pass. It is used by a team that wants to spread out rather than clump together.

It is a few guys between your ball carrier and the defense... preferably in 2 rows so that the Defenses Blitz can only get through the 1st line of players but not the 2nd line. And there should be an expectation by the Offense that the Defensive team either will not be able to Dodge through the Screen (or Leap over it). Or that the Defense is too slow to reach the ball carrier this turn.

A screen is not likely to have any protection on the backside of the ball carrier like a cage should. It is using distance (MA/speed) to protect the backside from the defense.

Also... a screen could also be simply 1 or 2 players standing in the way of the Defense so that the Defense must go around them OR should they go through they would still not be able to hit the Ball Carrier. If the ball is held by a War Dancer he could still Leap or Dodge away the next turn as an example.

For a speed or agility team a screen is sometimes a better tactic that a cage when on offense. But there are still times you must Cage with any roster.
