I think there's a little more wiggle room than you give credit, but yeah. That's what a snake draft would be for, making sure the top tier team halves get matched up with middling ones to level things out a bit. |

I think the most fair would be a no progression tournament with fixed starting gold, and coaches bid with gold to get the next selection of roster. Lets say if we start with 1100 and i bid 50k for the next selection then i will have 1050 to spend on the roster, but could select a race for 'half' my team. |

The auction idea is interesting, but seems a bit messy--even with the truncated positional lineups a lot of teams are going to want 1000+ to buy their whole roster after rerolls etc., so that doesn't leave much to spend on bids. A narrow bidding range means there are going to be a lot of situations where multiple players value the pick equally and you have to decide who gets the pick based on 1st come 1st serve or coin flip.
You could increase the starting cash to encourage larger bids, but that could potentially get a lot more lopsided if you get people bidding too conservatively (top teams would have plenty of cash and wouldn't feel the squeeze, bottom teams would too much cash that wouldn't make up for their weak position.)
Maybe you could mix the two ideas: everybody puts in a bid for draft position, high bid gets to choose their position in the draft order (since they might decide that trying to find a sweet spot towards the middle is more valuable than grabbing the first/last pick) and work your way down the list from there. |

The concept is that it's just 2 teams mashed together a la Underworld, not picking positionals a la carte. So you could have:
Dwarf linos, 2 zombies for line fodder, 2 wights, 2 mummies (depending on whether mummies are judged to be Big Guys)
Dwarf linos, 2 chorf blockers, 2 bull centaurs, probably skip the hobgoblins
Dwarf linos, 2 woodie linos, 2 woodie catchers, 2 wardancers
All potentially good teams, but not as crazy as a full mix-n-match setup. |

Ogre's and lizardmen would be my team. 6 ogre's, 1 Kroxi, then skinks. Be fun to play a competitive Ogre team finally. |

Can't take more than 2 of each positional
So it'd be 2 ogres 1 krox plus skinks |

Nope
Mino, beastmen, 2 EU blitzer 2 catcher 2 lineelf
Probably better with 2 wardancers 2 catcher 2 lineelf, but either fits the rules
9 beastmen, 2 gutters
5 dwarves, 2 wardancers 2 catchers 2 lineelf |
