Maxus Zson stood staring out across the choppy waters at the coastline of a foreign land. He was the oldest member of the team but his time in the Old World had been but a flicker compared to that of his hosts. Their slow pace of travel had driven even him to boredom and now he grew bored with the games his teammates played to pass the time. Max found himself leaning on the railing of this ancient frigate longing to trade the wooden planks beneath his feet for the grass of a pitch. “Hell, I’d even settle for Astrogranite right about now” he thought to himself.

Quote:
As the realm from which the current Phoenix King comes Eataine (pronounced Ay-a-tain) is considered first among the Elf Kingdoms. However, Eataine is simply the hinterland of the vast city-state of Lothern. Its lands are dotted with vineyards, villas and summer estates to which the noble families of the city retire. The city is the real center of power and source of Eataine’s prosperity. It is one of the wonders of the known world and none who has ever visited can forget it.

Max watched on the horizon as the spire of a great tower, it’s flags whipping in the heavy winds, rose up slowly out of the ocean. “Why in the Old World would High Elves bring a second-rate human team all the way here to play a match,” he wondered to himself. Max noticed the coastline seemed to be closing in on both sides of the ship like the mouth of some great sea monster when he was startled by the voice on a High Elf.

“Imposing, isn’t it?” Ashjill Truemoon questioned Max over his shoulder. “My apologies… I didn’t mean to surprise you.” Ashjill’s long silvery hair danced in the breeze as he stared intently at the approaching sights.

Max nodded. For just how long had the High Elf had been standing there… seconds, minutes or longer? They appeared to him to be a great race of snails taking far too much time to do even the simplest of tasks. How they could possibly compete on a BloodBowl pitch was beyond Max’s comprehension.

Quote:
Approaching Lothern the first thing a mariner sees is the Glittering Tower, a great lighthouse filled with thousands of lamps, situated on a rocky isle in the mouth of the treacherous waters of the Straits of Lothern. This titanic fortress guards the approach to the Emerald Gate, the first sea gate of Lothern. Any attackers approaching the Emerald Gate can easily be caught in a crossfire between the great wars engines in the Glittering Tower and hose on the Gate. The sight of these great bastions gives any would-be attacker just pause for thought.

“Look there, you can see the Gate as we round the island,” the host’s long finger directed Max’s gaze just off the port bow. “Have you ever visited the Ulthuan Realms before,” Ashjill questioned Max as the ship danced evermore against sizeable waves.

“No, never,” he replied with a touch of sorrow. “I’m afraid I’ve not had many opportunities to travel outside of Bretonnia.” Max’s poverty was never more apparent to himself than it was now overlooking this stunning display of wealth before him – he had survived much longer than most Human lineman, but it had done nothing more than bring him enough money to chase down sin.

Quote:
Guided by an Elf pilot the ship then passes through the Emerald Gate, a great, fortified arch filled with war machines and the cloaked spearmen and archers of the Lothern Sea Guard. Two gigantic valves of carved bronze set with monstrous emeralds bar the way but as the ship approaches they smoothly swing back through the churning waters to reveal the Straits of Lothern. The craft passes down a wide channel between sheer cliffs lined with castles, ramparts and defenses, before passing through the second portal, a gate of shining silver set with sapphires the size of a man’s head. Beyond the Sapphire gate lays a huge lagoon ringed around with the shining towers of Lothern.

The sounds of the ocean were slowly being drowned out by Max’s boisterous young teammates as they scurried out from below deck to take in the sights. “You were just gonna leave us down there and let us miss all this playing cards?” they questioned the old veteran while pointing and gesturing wildly at all the magnificent constructions around them.

Max sighed at the loss of his solitude. “Actually… yes, I was going to just leave you dolts down there!” he replied and was greeted with a chorus of boos and whistles. He turned back to Ashjill who actually cracked a half-smile at the novel scene playing out before him. “Where does the stadium lie?”

Quote:
The city fans upward from the coast, its white towers climbing gracefully into the foothills of the distant mountains. Bobbing at anchor are thousands of vessels ranging from the trading ships of the merchant princes to the fanciful pleasure barges of the people of Lothern and the sleek, deadly warships of the High Elf fleet. The city of Lothern is not simply built around the lagoon; at some points artificial islands have been built within its waters.

On these rest great palaces, temple and storehouses forming an intricate network of canals. Towering two hundred foot high statues of the Phoenix King and the Everqueen face each other across the mouth of the bay and around the harbor are other great statues of the Elf Gods: Asuryan, Lileath, Kurnous, Isha and many others.

Ashjill motioned to one of the islands nearest the shoreline where a great bridge arched over the water connecting it to the mainland. Toward he center was a great coliseum dotted with flags proudly displaying various High Elf runes. “It is there that the match will take place.” As the host spoke the attention of the young players all focused on the stadium and a strange silence came over the deck.

Max looked past the island upon a new site – yet another great gate. “We look to be docking at the island. Will there be a chance later to see what’s behind that gateway over there?”

Quote:
This is as far as any non-Elf can go. He is free to sample the delights of the city but is forbidden to pass through the third gate of ruby and gold into the Inner Seas. The two most sacred shrines in all Ulthuan lie in the Inner Seas to the north of Lothern, as well as the strange and terrible area known as the Isle of the Dead.

Ashjill shook his head. “You’ve been brought here to play a BloodBowl match. And I’ve never know any but elves to go past the Ruby gate,” he replied. “I would think the likelihood of a human being allowed entrance is highly doubtful!”
