Elberond Lonesinger watched the pair of humans from on high, reclining in the bend of a branch atop a majestic oak that towered over the forest canopy. A male and female stomped their way through the undergrowth snapping branches and muttering curses. Elberond had never heard such a racket before. He considered signaling his companion but decided it unnecessary as the humans were likely doing a better job of it.

Quote:
The oldest of all the forests of the Old World, its most ancient trees having grown from saplings seeded by the Old Ones’ servants, Athel Loren is a mystical place whose shadow stretches far across the land. Whether it was the Old Ones that granted strange life to these woods, or perhaps the coming of Chaos that awoke the trees, it is impossible to say. All that can be said is that in the dawn of time, the trees began to think in a way that trees are not meant to, and that they learned of feelings such as anger and hate. The forest became aware of itself and of the other races crawling like insects upon the world, and it was not pleased with their intentions.

Sure enough, it wasn’t long before the other scout was heading for the base of the great oak. Aengoth Evergrass hoped onto a low outcropping and deftly leapt from one branch to another, never coming to a stop, on his way up to Elberond’s lofty perch. His gaze ran from the humans around the forest and then back. Aengoth frowned and looked perplexed, “Where in Ariel’s name is the rest of the army? Surely those two can’t be making all that noise!”

Quote:
Standing stones carved with worn Elven runes mark the borders of this primeval realm, beyond which giant trees loom, their branches moving slowly as they strain to escape the magical barrier of the watchstones. Roots twist and claw across the fern-covered rocks and loam, and low mists coil and spread throughout its hollows and glades. This verdant labyrinth unsettles even the most courageous soul – filled with movement glimpsed from the corner of the eye, strange noises, and the feeling that one is being watched at all times. There is a slumbering awareness and a sense of watchfulness that permeates each leafy glade and winding track.

Aengoth untied the two pieces of twine that held his bow against his back and prepared to nock an arrow, “Should I end this mercifully before they attract some Dryads and are torn into tiny bits?”

“Nah,” replied Elberond with a shrug. “I find their blundering about to be somewhat entertaining. And besides, the Dryads are probably down by the river taking in some sunlight this time of day.” He squinted up at the Noonday Sun.

“They must really be idiots,” Aengoth sighed while lowered his bow, “to have wandered past the stones.” He watched at the woman trip over a root that contorted itself to catch her foot. As she crashed to the forest floor, Aengoth could only shake his head in disgust.

Quote:
Dark forms move through the twisting branches and dense undergrowth. Tiny darting shapes flit between the trees on the very edge of vision. Athel Loren sees and feels everything within its boundaries and is watchful and secretive, perfectly willing to destroy those that seek to enter. Only the insanely brave, mad, or foolish dare to cross into Athel Loren, for the forest is a haunted place, filled with unquiet, malicious spirits.

Elberond stood up and began hoping down the tree braches towards the ground. “Come, let’s get them turned in the proper direction,” he motioned for Aengoth to follow. “What do you have planned for your time when your patrol is over,” he asked?

“I’ve been seriously considering trying out for a spot on a BloodBowl team,” Aengoth stated rather proudly. “Here, watch this!” He picked up a smooth, fist-sized stone and hurled it in a perfect arc towards the head of the man. In the moment before it would have found it’s target, a bough moved to deflect the rock. As it crashed to the ground, the startled humans shrieked and began to run.

The elves starred at one another in stunned silence. “This pair is so pathetic, even the trees feels sorry for them!” Elberond chuckled before doubling over in silent laughter.

Quote:
The forest of Athel Loren defies the natural laws of the world, and time flows strangely within its bounds. An individual that treks under the dark boughs for what may only seem like a couple of hours may, if he survives, return home to find that 100 years have passed. Equally, one might wander lost within Athel Loren for decades, only to find that scant minutes have passed in the outside world. Athel Loren is more alive than any normal forest, and landmarks and glades shift and move. What was open clearing one night may be heavily wooded the next morning, and pathways often disappear or turn back on themselves within hours.

“Anyways,” Aengoth turned the conversation back to sport, “I think I could make a team as a thrower. I’m looking forward to stepping out on the pitch and seeing the great beyond once my tour is up.”

The elves slowly walked along a curving path through the undergrowth that, despite their leisurely pace, took them ahead of the hurried pair of humans. Elberond whispered instructions to the trees and soon the humans were unwittingly running in the opposite direction. “I must admit,” he confessed to Aengoth, “I’ve never much liked the thought of leaving the forest.”

Quote:
Most that try to enter Athel Loren find themselves constantly returning to where they started despite their best efforts to make headway. Even if they try and walk a straight path, they invariably find themselves turned around and facing out of the forest. Most travelers that persist in entering Athel Loren are found on its outskirts as little more than gibbering wrecks, their sanity shredded by whatever horrors they witnessed in the magical forest.

“Well, I find little enjoyment in only playing against other elves. I want a challenge!” Aengoth said excitedly. “Bring on Orcs and Dwarves and… and, whatever might be out there waiting for us!”

Elberond watched as the pair of humans approached the edge of the forest and for some unknown reason, changed directions and began to head back in. “What the…” his voice trailed off in disgust. “Now I grow weary of these humans.”

Aengoth raised an eyebrow, smiled, then raised his bow and took aim.

Quote:
That is, if they ever return.

“When will you leave?” Elberond asked as the pair headed back into the depths of Athel Loren towards the great banquet hall.

“Oh, very soon,” Aengoth replied. “The season is just about to start!
