I don't recommend using Paint. you can make it work, but it's easier to just use the GIMP. The GIMP looks intimidating, but you won't be using it for much so once you learn the basics its really easy. |

I don't know why you are getting a background color. When I opened them in the GIMP, I get a black and gray checkered background, which is what it should be. The black and gray checkered stuff is transparent and wont be seen when saved. It's mainly there as a reference. |

If you create a new image, u can chose the background color, which you have to select 'transparency'. (under the advanced option) |
