I can't seem to connect to the chat channel and have tried two different IRC's, as well as the java connect. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

And so the saga continues...

I'm told our port that IRC's use at work is closed. Any tips around this?

Thanks.

Yes and no. There are ways around it, depending on what ports have been left open and how much trouble you want to go to. The easiest way would be to find the range of open ports and then see if any of the IRC servers in this network are open on that range. Some are open on nonstandard ports for exactly this reason. Option two is to determine an open port and then proxy the connection through that port. For that you need would need to run proxy software on your home computer on a port that is open from work and then connect your IRC program through that.

Seeing as I'm having the same problem, any ideas how to check the range of open ports? I think going to the IT department and asking might be the fast-track to the dole queue. Smile

a port scan might just get you there too Wink

However, a port scan might trigger some security systems. Would probably look very suspicious if it came from "inside"...

I recommend being careful with the port scanning...

I have probs too. Im behind a firewall and last time Christer solved my problem by asking me to connect to:
frozen.ca.afternet.org on port: 6670.
this does not work any more.
Any suffestions? i do not know how to scan ports or similar.

Well, you best bets on open ports are the ones commonly used by "legit" network trafic. 80, 21, ect, the ones used my http, telnet, ftp, stuff like that. I don't know for sure if any of the IRC server in this network support those but I imagine some do for just this reason.

Right then, this gets weirder.....I've managed to connect to a different IRC client (Jammin.irctown.net) on port 6667, which means it's not a port or firewall problem. So howcome I can't get onto irc.afternet.org?

Perhaps the (sub)domain is blocked/filtered by your proxy/firewall.
