I have long said I would take a completely new approach to making my v3 pitches, and finally, I've got my thumb out.

I've just spent a happy evening tiling and layering in the GIMP to create the first part of Col's Pitch Construction Set.

This is a Photoshop-compatible image file containing many, many layers, from which a high-quality Blood Bowl pitch can be made. The size is correct for large-screen pitches, and it's easy enough to resize (and don't forget to sharpen) your final output for medium- and small-screen options.

This initial release might look quite boring, as all it contains is layers of rock, mud, sand, scrub and grass. Open up your Layers dialog box in Photoshop, GIMP or other layers-capable editor and start changing the opacity and visibility of the different layers, and you'll soon see just how good it is - it should allow nearly infinite variation. Start erasing parts of some layers to let the lower ones show through in places, and you're really in business.

Still to come are dug-outs and pitch markings, with separate layers for dots, lines and stripes - think Wembley on FA Cup final day - (more layers for decoration, old gore smears, abandoned gear, severed extremities etc. are perfectly doable) and weather effects (blizzard, ice, flooded, harsh shadow, floodlights).

I'm releasing this early draft because I'm keen to see what others can do with it - I'm sure folks can come up with good dugouts, markings and weather effects.

Thanks go to http://www.oneodddude.net/FreeTextures.php and http://seamlesstexture.blogspot.com/ for the original textures.

Very nice, Colin. I'm looking forward to seeing the pitch markings and debris. The textures you do have look great so far.

Just a tip to those who want to give it a go, just pick a couple of layers and turn the opacity up. As it is, it's a bit overwhelming, but you can get some nice depth with just 2 or 3 textures. This is just a couple of minutes work, without actually changing any of the textures at all - just added a few non-destructive layer masks and a color overlay on the base.

I threw some of the layers on top of the "plain" fields, and it looks really good. Some extra little things would be awesome! Keep up the good work.

I did get a bit carried away, and I noticed there were diminishing returns as the number of layers got well into double figures!

Nevertheless, I thought it was better to have the options than not, so I suggest picking only one each of the rocky, sandy and muddy layers, with maybe two grassy layers.

Following my own advice above (using only 5 or so layers), here's a surface I whipped up in a few minutes. I used the eraser set to roughly 40% opacity, and scrubbed out some of the upper grassy layers. It was resized to 902 pixels wide (using GIMP's Lanczos3 algorithm), then a little bit of unsharp mask (radius 0.2, amount 0.3, threshold 9) to restore the crispness resizing removes:

Colin, you old git! Nice to see you're still around, but try to get your butt ON that pitch every once in a while too!

I've now updated the Pitch Construction Set with pitch markings - these include layers for pitch and endzone outlines, lines, thin and thick crosshairs, chequerboard and best of all, the 'Wembley' effect I talked about earlier - this was achieved by having vertical and horizontal stripes on separate layers:

If you're taking requests, can we have a dots layer for the corners of the squares, for those of us with funny eyes.

Also, a true Wembley effect football markings for the OBBA league too. Wink

All in all, very nice!

Dots will be in the next release. Regarding customised pitches, there's nothing to stop people adding their own layers with league or team logos and slogans. If they want to distribute it, just publish it in any image format which supports transparency (PNG or GIF is most common) of a size 1201x602, and it can be inserted/pasted as a new layer in the Construction Set. Obviously, it should be the top layer to avoid being obscured by other details.

Nice effort, pt0510 - watch out for sharing pitches via Photobucket - they've rescaled your image to 1023 x 513 pixels.

There's a work-around (just worked it out and tested it) you can use with Picasa Web Albums - upload to an album, find the link to download the full resolution version, copy that link, and remove the "?imgdl=1" from the end of the url (which should now end with ".jpg"). You can have images up to 1600 pixels on the long side this way, which is more than we need.

Flickr may be another option, I believe they offer full resolution downloads, not sure about linking them though.
