Pi
Seriously? You think Pi is a fraction?

It might be an irrational number, but it's a hell of a lot easier to just represent it at 355/113 Wink

which is wrong by the 8th significant figure...
not useful.

And how many digits do you remember Pi to when you do your calculations?

Well if you talk about winning the lottery, then we are talking similar chances for each player (very close to 0). However, often SOMEONE wins, so the chance was not exactly 0 for that 1 winner...

(this is a response to the OP)

3.1415926535 is the part i remember. Of course most calculators and software have a value that you can use.

Depends.

If I have other limitations with regards to accuracy, then 4/5 is good enough, which I can just do off the top of my head.

If other things are more exact, I might write/use a program to get it to 10+ figures.

In which case 355/113 would work perfectly well too Very Happy

I think I read that 8 sig figs is accurate enough to give the circumference of the earth (assuming the earth is a spher) correct to a cm, or something like that. So pretty useful.

And back to the logs chap (struggling to quote more than once), how would you put 0.9 recurring into your calculator?

As an addendum to the OP:

Can anyone think of a situation where it is more efficient/better to use 0.9 recurring, instead of 1?
