Scoreline is fine. Although yes, final scoreline is a bit of a redundancy.

"Scoreline"? I've never heard that term used. But, in researching it just now, it seems it's a strictly British journalism term, so it makes sense that it would be completely unfamiliar to most anyone in the Americas. (And, yes, by definition a scoreline is final.)

If you want to use strictly British jargon, no worries by me; if not, just use "final score", as anyone(?) will understand that - but if you're going with it, it seems that it's one word, not two.

Well, this article suggests it's not strictly British http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Canucks+score+line+flatters+sloppy+victory+over+inept+Calgary+Flames/8207287/story.html

Apart from all the French and Americanised stuff, and the pure Canadianisms. Nonetheless, it's in the Americas.

It's not as if we don't put up with plenty of American nonsense. I shudder every time I see a fence in defence.

Scoreline must be less offensive than that.

It's not offensive, it's just... unfamiliar, strange-sounding. It sounds off, (tho' not as bad as some Brit in an American bar asking someone "You wanna fag?") Shocked

Like I said, if the authors want it, no problem by me, but it is what it is.

Sigh - really?

Which is why I specifically said "most anyone" in the Americas - you want a population breakdown? (Why did I know you were both going to miss that and try to nit pick it?)

Perhaps if you'd said 'almost', he would have been less pedantic.

It's so strange having an American type be picking up on English. It goes against perhaps seventeen stereotypes?

But this isn't for a thread about something so wonderful.

The handbook is written in Canuckistanian with a leaning toward the Queen's English. I think scoreline is fine, it is commonly used on all our sport broadcasts. Didn't even realize it was not very common in the US.

I do appreciate all the nitpicking though, I want the book to be polished.

My point there wasn't that most/all/some or none of the population of the Americas were unfamiliar with it. Simply that it isn't a strictly British term.

Interestingly, as a Canadian, I am unfamiliar with the term scoreline. However, it seems perfectly fine as a term to me.

I don't understand 'u in check'. Are you talking about cheques?

All of this pales into insignificance if you look at the incorrect use (or non use) of the letter aitch. Both sides of the Atlantic fail in the most awful ways.
