Welcome to the Season IX installment of the NWFL Weekly! I will be using this forum thread to provide game recaps, standings analysis, and whatever else I feel is worthy of sharing with the League as a whole. You are all more than welcome to chime in with whatever you might want to say, as well, but I would ask that trash talk be kept to a minimum, in order to keep the signal-to-noise ratio reasonable. Please feel free to contribute, and subscribe to the thread to be informed whenever it updates.

I am going to start Season IX off by highlighting some of the more successful teams from last season - the early favourites for Season IX. Enjoy!

Shadowland Golds - themalkman
High Elf
Season VIII - 8-5-1, 1st in AWC

Shadowland had the best record in the AWC last season, beating out the Winchester Wicked Wrongdoers on tiebreakers, but were taken down by Winchester in the playoffs. Shadowland is headlined by +ST thrower 'Golden' Theo Jackson, with both of their blitzers also verging on Super Star status, but lost both of their +AG players late last season. They had the second-most TDs in the league during Season VIII, but will need to adapt their game plan for Season IX.

Argentinian Caudillos - Emanukio
Elf
Season VIII - 10-0-4, 1st in NWC, most TDs

The only team with more TDs than Shadowland during Season VIII, the Caudillos scored a whopping 30 to take the TD crown and first place in the NWC. The Caudillos spent a long time losing players regularly, but hit a groove near the end of last season, keeping their remaining stars healthy through the end of the season. Four Guard players and some stat boosts give them a very versatile game.

Nehekhara Guardians - clemUSA
Khemri
Season VIII - 5-7-2, 5th in NWC, won NWC playoff

Nehekhara came from behind to squeak into the playoffs, then took advantage by winning the NWC conference. They had the second-most CAS in the league during Season VIII, behind only the Lonely Mountain Miners, who are taking a season off. Nehekhara was a rookie team during Season VIII, and are still building up, but a lot of Mighty Blow and some stats and doubles make them scary to try and contain.

Winchester Wicked Wrongdoers - Ziggyny
Chaos Dwarf
Season VIII - 10-1-3, 2nd in AWC, won Superior Bowl

Winchester was also a rookie team at the start of Season VIII, using inducements near the start of the season to get ahead, then switching to native talent once they had skilled up some. Featuring the league's leading scorer, Mr Boddy, the Wicked Wrongdoers smashed their way to the Season VIII crown. Salary Cap winnings allowed them to keep the core of their team for Season IX, and they have already started the Preseason with a win, though not without cost. Be very careful around the Wicked Wrongdoers, for they are quick with the rope and the lead pipe!

We mourn the final death of Askor, the great defensive specialist of the Necropolis Priest Kings in the first preseason game. Playing over the course of 58 games, Askor was easily the most agile player on the team. He delivered both accurate kicking as well as a surprising number of touchdowns, usually by stealing the ball from the opponents of the Priest Kings. Slain by Woody Allen, a War Dancer of the Hollywood Roundup Gang, Askor will be sorely missed.

Week 1 of the Preseason is in the books, and it was a bloody week for the veterans, with three Super Stars from various teams not making it through to the second week. The NWFL Weekly would like to take a minute to recognize the achievements of these players.

Askor of the Necropolis Priest Kings has already been mentioned here. Necropolis ran an interesting split with their thro-ras, with Valdeth being fielded only on offence and Askor only on defence. +AG and Dodge helped Askor snag balls that the Priest Kings would knock free. He was hurt for -AV late last season, though, and this was his first game back with that injury. Valdeth will need to take over as primary on both offence and defence for a while, but the soon-to-be-legend should be up for it.

Miguel Swatsom was the last original player left on the White Rock Midnight. +AG, Strip Ball, and Mighty Blow made him the go-to hitter for White Rock. He also suffered -AV last season, and finally went down when a Blood Lusted vampire tore him apart while looking for a snack. White Rock has already started training a replacement, with a rookie blitzer skilling for +AG in the same match, but will be feeling the loss for quite some time.

The last Week 1 game saw the loss of +ST Block Tackle skink Paris Jackson of the Surrey Serpents. Paris was a late bloomer, acquiring a pair of normal skills before getting the rocking skill rolls, and was the last skink left from the original Serpents. His last act before his death saw him blitz into a cage in order to 1d KO the ball-carrier in an attempt to stop a score; unfortunately, the return hit finally ended his spectacular career.

There is never a good time to lose a Super Star, but the first week of the Preseason - when salary cap cuts have been made, and safety margins pared away - is an even worse time than normal. The NWFL Weekly would like to extend their condolences to the teammates of these fallen players, and wish a speedy recovery to their teams.

Condolences on their passing. I've lost my share of Super Stars, and it's a tad frustrating, especially when they're the kind that are hard to replace. Those guys need company: I can imagine the three of them sitting there in the special Hell of Getting RIP'd in Preseason, made easier because I had to read No Exit in college. The Cleveland Children would like to extend an offer to ferry some more Super-Stars over to join them in that still-too-lonely place, but first we're having some old friends for dinner.

The really sad part about Miguels death was that it was 50/50 at the end of last season whether he would return for another season or hang up his cleats and watch the midnight try to rebuild around Aroon.

The team convinced him to stay by dumping 2 RRs and making various other concessions to his vanity, and he was playing well vs. Essex before a late game hit ended his life. Already Denario had taxed the APO in the first half bringing him back from the brink.

So now the Midnight get to enter the rebuild phase without either Miguels steady presence, or the buffer of additional training.

That was it for now, actually. I wasn't planning on talking about all of the teams, so I just covered the top ones from last season.

The Joplin Disasters are still mourning the loss of their ST6 mino, but at least they didn't enter the preseason with him.

And since 2 games later his rookie replacement was RIP'd turn 1, maybe that was Nuffle's form of "lucky". :/

Define... er, I mean - sorry. Hard to remember that restriction, only Leauge thread that is "zero trash tolerance". My bad. Embarassed

Congratulations to Valdeth, of the Necropolis Priest Kings, on reaching Legend! He reached 176 SPP with a farming pass at the end of the first half of a game against the Cleveland Children, then rushed for a TD as well as the Priest Kings took a 2-1 victory. Valdeth is only the third player in the history of the NWFL to reach Legend, following Jokey Smurf of the now-departed Snarkville Smurfs and Stefan "Eyes of Gold" Feld of the Essen Exsanguinators, and he has now passed Stefan to have the highest SPP total in the league. Well done!

'Twas the Cleveland Children, not the Colorado Chipmunks. Easy mistake to make … if you haven't played them.

Edited, thanks. I don't think I'd have gotten quite that confused if you guys hadn't played each other twice already.
