You could well be right. Just a shame we can't do a poll to find out the reason why these people leave after only a few games.

I usually get matches vs. rookies in Ranked with my all-rotters and will mention the 145 Club in match. It's usually a fun match with chances on both sides, and sometimes I feel like the one cherry picked. On occasion there are coaches who get upset at every dice roll - there's not a lot you can do about that.

I thoroughly enjoyed our match yesterday - not because I won - but because it was fairly matched and entertaining. A more experienced coach (you) with a slightly more experienced but weaker team V a less experienced coach (me) playing a new (1 match) more or less full strength starting team. You were able to give me some helpful hints along the away and answer a few questions too, whilst still keeping the game challenging.

That is exactly the sort of match which would help new players and would fit in to the aforementioned academy set up, particularly if combined with the 145 club.

I looked at the welcome newcomers thread... https://fumbbl.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=27015&start=165&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

...and checked back a few pages (16-12) to see what happened to the new coaches. All these guys/girls were keen enough to bother to post in the forums, introducing themselves etc, and recieved greetings and encouragements etc from the already established members. Over those 5 pages, i think only 3 of the newcomers are still about. The rest...

https://fumbbl.com/~TotalBarley - last seen 3 weeks ago - yet to play a game.

https://fumbbl.com/~Marquis_de_Waaagh - last seen 17 days ago - yet to play a game.

https://fumbbl.com/~A-Retired-Rookie - this guy posted that he was "having a great time" - but with a record of 1/1/6 and not have being seen for 13 weeks, i'm guessing he might be gone for good (or back to BB2)

https://fumbbl.com/~Cassie - 8/1/16 record - last seen 11 weeks ago.

https://fumbbl.com/~Calorie_Mate - Interested enough to post a few questions in the forum but at 5/1/8 and gone for 15 weeks

https://fumbbl.com/~BBMek at 3/2/14 - gone for 20 weeks

https://fumbbl.com/~Winti26 posted that he was beginner to game - 0/1/2 - 20 weeks absent

https://fumbbl.com/~Trulock 0/0/1 25 weeks gone

https://fumbbl.com/~Rorarimbo came from BB1 0/0/1 gone for 25 weeks

https://fumbbl.com/~Incitatis record of 16/6/20 - 20 weeks gone

https://fumbbl.com/~cosius record 2/1/3 gone 18 weeks

https://fumbbl.com/~Czapencki record 4/3/23 for someone who 'loves the game' - 5 weeks seems a fairly long absence

https://fumbbl.com/~BastleCerry record 0/0/1 - 27 weeks gone

https://fumbbl.com/~Swan posted a very long forum post about struggling with the game - record 3/2/35 - gone 23 weeks

https://fumbbl.com/~Lustriano_de_plata - never played a game. Gone 29 weeks.

It would seem that the welcome newcomer thread isn't enough to encourage newbies to stay. And I haven't even checked the rest of the pages of the thread. Am I alone in thinking there must be some way we can help retain new members?

I really think that given the learning curve, the vast experience of other coaches, and a few other factors, to keep people coming back, you need to hold the hand and regularly communicate. You gotta sell them on the idea that you won't really have your BB-legs until some point down the road and even then there will be bad beats.

I am at the extreme here where I've decided BB is 'my game' and one that I'll play for the rest of my life because it's so fulfilling in so many ways for me and the price can't be beat.

BB is not a game you simply traipse into and 'get' and then prosper at, at least not for the vast majority of coaches.

I know this is a big ask of the coaches who are lending a hand in helping out but...pinging these new coaches once every 3-4 days asking for a game and then doing a lesson plan week by week so that at the end of say a 4-6 week period. You gotta invest in other people for them to yield returns.

As it is now, it seems like we're kind of at a middle school dance where everyone is too shy to ask other people to dance.

The 145 is what's keeping me here at the moment. I started out with Ranked and just couldn't find rookie coaches, so got smashed and ended up running a team of journeymen without being able to use positionals due to their MNG injuries.

The 145 is a much easier way to get to grips with FUMBBL, I'm really enjoying it, the chat is decent and I can see a progression from that, to Ranked (maybe one day even the dreaded Box!).

It's just tough finding a(nother) rookie coach via Ranked, in my experience.

For me, there can't be enough talk about the 145 when someone new (like me) starts.

Glad I didn't get 300 games in before learning that though, like an earlier poster!

I agree with all of this.

Glad you stuck around Smile the 145 matchmaking thread is a lifesaver. Unfortunately, I am often restricted timewise so I am not always able to take advantage of it. It has been a while since i have played in Ranked due to it being full of Legends/Superstars etc and I am not interested in playing against people with so much more experience - yet. Unlike most people, I havent played BB in real life (or the cyanide version) so that 300+ games I have played on here is my TOTAL BB experience. So being able to play opponents who are at a similar level is what I am aiming for.

I looked at one of the absent coaches records - https://fumbbl.com/~cosius (2/1/3 - gone 18 weeks) to see who he/she had played.

The opponents were as followed:
141 games (Superstar)
712 games (Legend/Superstar)
477 games (Star/Superstar)
369 games (Rookie/Veteran)
25 games (star/emerging star but also another one absent for 12 weeks themselves with a 9/5/11 record)
135 games (Rookie/Experienced)

It strikes me that a newcomer such as cosius shouldn't have been playing any of these matches (apart from the opponent with 25 games) as they are all too experienced and used to FUMBBL. I am not criticising those players - they have done nothing wrong (I've probably done it myself)- but I don't think those sort of match ups are helping retain new players.

https://fumbbl.com/~MagicKnight

Another one who posted on the thread requesting coaching, played 2 games and lost them both (against a star with 748 games played and a 'emerging star' with 3769 games played) and hasn't been seen in 29 weeks.

What a waste.

Here is another: https://fumbbl.com/~Gambler75

He seemed keen - he posted the following in the thread.

Played 4 matches (record 1/1/2) against the following:

Superstar 471 games
Emerging Star/Experienced 134 games
Star 748 Games
Veteran/Star 434 games

Last seen 31 Weeks ago.

I don't think a "don't play noobs unless you're one too" rule is in order. I think the answer is in a more active and vigorous 145 Club and a better job steering new coaches toward the Faculty.

I think if you have played over a 1000 games or are comfortably a superstar/legend, then it would be helpful to avoid newbies until they have at least a few games (20-30+ - more if they are losing more than they win) under their belt, so that they have some idea what they are doing.

This I agree with.

Absent an environment that is specifically set up to tutor and nurture a love of BB, coaches who play Box and Ranked can't get out of the way of their down dick stroking to even offer up a softball game and take an additional 30-40 minutes to guide a new coach into the light. I don't fault coaches for not being cognizant of how their actions influence other people and their expectations but honestly, at this point in time, if you aren't aware or don't even care, you're being counterproductive to the long term health of Fumbbl.

I think you've inspired me Jamerson - I will start playing my ranked teams strictly for the purposes of trolling Ranked players in tourneys AND for the benefit of rookies who would like guidance on the basics. Gotta work on the bio.

In fact if some erstwhile Ranked coach wants to write up a good one page info sheet on finding the best matches for rookies as a rookie that'd be awesome. I'd do it but I'd be too salty.

I have a Ranked team that's specifically designed to play new teams, and so it draws a lot of noob coaches (probably one per 4-5 games). When I run across one, I'm always sure to give them some pointers after the game and refer them to the Faculty and 145 Club. But I think coaches at all levels of skill should make a point of playing against coaches at all levels of skill.
