The four game road trip was one the Archers of Avelon would rather forget. It opened with a humiliating defeat where they could not muster a point and ended with a draw and Kydeth suffering a nasty hip injury. Sandwiched in the middle was a pair of draws.

Someone once said that “A draw is like kissing your sister. Sure you can do it and there may be times it is even appropriate, but neither of you should ever get anything out of it.”

That sentiment pretty well summarized the Archer mood as their wagons rolled slowly back towards Avelon.

However, there was one highlight during the trip. Game 83, the first game of the road trip came against the Chaos team of Knopfler and Friends. While no one had yet figured out who or what Knopfler was, the game itself was a landmark. For 50 solid games the Archers had been more resilient than any dwarf in history. In fact in the history of the Fumbbl Confederation no one could remember a time that a team had been so long suffering. Over the course of 50 games not a single Archer had stepped off the Blood Bowl pitch and into retirement. Some had even struggled through what normally would have been career ending injuries for the glory of the Archers of Avelon.

After that match the High Elf team, The Archers of Avelon, was the first team in history to claim what should have been a dwarf Fumbbl Badge. They claimed the Mustn’t Grumble Badge and had it proudly hung in the Archer of Avelon Club House.

Monsoon season was upon Avelon. The regular afternoon downpour made travel difficult, but it also dampened the number of patrons frequenting the Tarnished Crown. Most of the regulars did not want to risk being caught in the storm on their way home. Not only did you risk getting soaked, more than one drunk had been found dead face down in a puddle or ditch the next morning. In this weather, if you were going to drink it was best to drink at home.

Corbis took advantage of the situation to tidy up the place and catch up on a little maintenance work. As the gnome stood on the bar putting new candles in one of the chandeliers, the front door unexpectedly opened. Corbis nearly fell off the bar. Through the door came a team that was clearly from LUSTria.

No less than fourteen incredible amazon specialists casually walked in. They stood proud and tall in their full glory, soaked from head to toe in the storm.

Corbis sat down on the bar to take it all in.

It would be hard to find a physical fault with this group. Blond, brunette, redhead, blue hair, tall, almost midget short, dark completions, light completions, blue eyes, brown eyes, honey eyes, and a set of triplets. All were represented.

Coming from a land populated entirely by women, there was little need for modesty and they wore what was functional for the climate. In this unusually hot weather wore light thin attire the rain did what will do.

When the coach Eldrich Fox came in, Corbis did not even notice him. He had just noticed how the rain had caused the carefully applied war paint around the amazon eyes to streak down each one of their beautiful faces.

Helmut Wulf had also accompanied the team and he politely tapped Corbis on the arm. “If you could be bothered to take our gold, we would like lodging until our match with the Archers.”

At the mention of gold, the gnome started to pay a little attention to the males in the room. “What do you require? We try to cater to everyone.”

Eldrich responded. “I heard you are equipped for dark elf tastes. Those accommodations should do well. We have no equipment or wagons only two mules for the team, a horse, and saddlebags for each of us. We just need you to stable the mounts.”

Corbis mumbled his approval. “Dark elf accommodations.” He thought to himself. “I thought they were freaks.” Before showing the team around the establishment he went to the door and hung a “No Vacancy” sign on the outside of it. Under the circumstances he did not want any more customers.

When Kondor learned there was an Amazon team lodged at the Tarnished Crown all he could do was sigh in resignation. He had purposefully avoided amazon teams because it was the only race the Archers had not yet faced. After this match he would be sporting a new tattoo.

As could be expected at this time of year, the game was played in the mud and muck to the absolute glee of the spectators. It was inevitable that the fans would invade the pitch considering eye candy on the field. It was also inevitable that every fan who chose to set foot on the field was carted off on a stretcher as neither the Amazons nor High Elves found the behavior acceptable.

Fortunately for the Archers, most of them did not have goolies to get. Rather Revwe single handedly took control of the match by injuring four amazons. Corbis was visibly shaken as he and the Amazon apothecary tried in vain to save Ann. In the days prior to the match she was one of several Amazons who took an interest in the gnome.

When both teams finally retired to the showers to wash the blood and grime away, the final score was 1-0 in favor of the Archers.

Kondor was frankly relieved to see Coach C98 accompany the heavy lifting ogres to the field and headed to the opposing sideline for a chat.

He did not mince words. “I’ve got to know. What happened after the match between the Titans and the Archers. In fact I’d like to know what had happened prior to the match.”

C98 looked at him. “Brother, you just would not understand. I don’t even know where to begin. I would say I’m never doing that again. In fact I never imagined doing what we did, and I have a fertile imagination. But to be honest I might just end up doing it again. I just don’t know if this old body could handle it. It went on and on, over and over, and then there were the tomatoes, badgers, and scrub brushes. I really freaked out when sprites and goblins showed up. I have the scars to prove it. No. I’d say I’m never doing that again but I might be lying.”

Kondor was terrified and intrigued. “Tomatoes?”

“I can’t say any more. If it got out I think I would be ostracized.” Said C98.

Kondor could not let it go. “I don’t understand. Tomatoes…..?”

“That is correct. TOMATOES! I’ve already said too much. But from now on you can pay me in tomatoes when you lose a match. Now that is the last I am saying about it.”

“Sprites and goblins…?” said Kondor absently.

C98 huffed angrily and left Kondor where he stood who then went back to the Archer sideline for the match.

The match itself turned out to be one for the ages. Elves were sent to injured dugout as if they were snotlings, and Revwe treated the snotlings like snotling. She terrorized the runts injuring five of them in an epic performance.

Prince Moranion even showed up to the game only to be carted off the field almost as soon as he arrived.

In the closing moments of the game, Eastwood decided he had seen enough carnage among the runts and decided to set Revwe straight. Today she would acknowledge his existence. The blow was a bit more than he intended. She went down face first and for a long while she did not move. Only a light groan proved she was not dead.

Corbis reached the field with his medical bag but knew immediately this was not something he was prepared to deal with. The medical unit carted her to the locker room to the cheers of the fans with Corbis following closely behind.

The final horn sounded with the score 2-2 but the Archers were more worried about their team captain than the score.

In the center of the locker room Revwe lay prone on a gurney. The stoic look from the gnome at her side conveyed the clear message that the situation was critical. He announced to everyone. “Broken neck. Her legs aren’t going to work right again.”

Everyone in the room had seen it before, but this was Revwe. One by one they chatted with her and encouraged her to keep her spirits up and then they left her in the care of Corbis. Kondor sat silently in a chair on the other side of the room struggling with his own internal daemons and staring at the broken body of his chief rival.

Revwe looked at Corbis thinking they were alone. “End this. End this now.” She said. “You’ve done it before on the field, but now I tell you do end this now.”

Corbis hesitated as Kondor silently watched. At last he took a scalpel from his satchel and placed it in her hand. “Not at my hand. I won’t do it.”

She nodded understandingly but before she could move Kondor’s voice came quietly from the distance. “No. Stop her Corbis.”

Without hesitation the gnome grabbed her hand preventing and pulled the blade from it.

“Kondor?” stated Revwe, and then with understandable vitriol. “Kondor! Now you are going to do something? Now you are going to gloat? Is this how you get even? You would deny me this? Do you want to see me go through an elven life time like this? You coward! You heartless creature! You HUMAN!!!”

Kondor walked over and looked down at her on the gurney full of anger and frustration. One by one he pointed at the tattoos on his body. Then in a flat menacing tone he spoke. “You gave me these. You made me the poster boy for the Archers and put me up for open scorn. You have led the Archer Kill Team and collected an untold number of heads. Seven bounties on the field if my count is correct.”

For once Revwe showed a hint of surprise.

Kondor continued. “Yes I know about the Kill Team. If I am heartless then yours is black and rotten. I have waited a long time for this moment, and I knew it would arrive if I was patient. I knew you would either end up like this or dead. I actually think this is preferable. Revwe Larereta, I… OWN …YOU.”

Kondor ran his hand through Revwe’s auburn hair, and the emotion that crossed the elf’s face was another new one. It was a hint of fear.

She shuddered, then composed herself and tried to talk her way out of it.
“Kondor, be reasonable. You have made several fortunes as coach of the Archers.”

Kondor scoffed at her feeble attempt. “Don’t worry. You are correct. You have made several fortunes for me. That is not what I want. I can buy as much elf flesh as I desire in the brothels of the Avelon Violet District. In that aspect you do not interest me. No Revwe. I am going to heal you and put you back on the blood bowl pitch to suffer and hopefully die eventually.”

Revwe looked confused.

“Long ago.” Said Kondor. “Long ago a coach named Christer gifted me with a draught that he said would cure any ailment, injury, or disease. It is priceless, and I have carefully guarded it in case I ever needed it for myself. I was advised that it was meant for me and if anyone else used it they would lose some of their free will. That I would have a measure of control over them.”

Kondor grabbed the hapless and now terrified elf by the jaw. “After today, you will do nothing to harm me and everything to protect me. You will do nothing to harm yourself. You will maintain the façade of our rivalry but you will pay me 90 percent of your bounties.”

Revwe forced her head to one side and blurted “Death is better.”

“That is not your option. I OWN YOU.” Said Kondor and he forced the liquid content of the potion down her throat. Then turned and walked to the door. “Make sure you are at practice tomorrow Revwe.”

“Yes sir.” She stated and pushed herself into a seated position.

Three days after the encounter with the ogres, Kondor scheduled a match against the Halfling team from a town a day’s journey South of Avelon.

To the shock of everyone on the high elf team, one of the “Flings” that came to play did not fit the mold. It was obvious to everyone except the referee that a human had infiltrated the team. As the ogre referee inspected the teams the poorly disguised human squatted to avoid attention and the ogre only glanced at him before shaking his head and walking away.

Kondor recognized the imposter immediately and chuckled. The gold front tooth and red leather cleats with a matching red choker gave the horrible disguise away immediately. Somehow, Coach C98 managed to register himself as a player on the Halfling team. Coach Kondor was certain that it would not be long before the entire team identified the fraudulent fling and took their frustrations out on the rival coach.

Fortunately for C98, the Archers had more to worry about than identifying the human on the field. Esmeralda’s Apron had hired Deeproot in addition to their normal pair of formidable trees. The elves maneuvered around the field avoiding the trees and hitting a fling wherever the chance presented itself, while the human hid in the shade of the wooden guardians.

It was not until he ended up with the ball that he drew any attention. The tree thought he saw a fling with the ball and tried to pick him up and toss him downfield only to drop the unexpected weight back on the ground near his own roots.

Adresin thought she finally found a favorable angle to jar the ball loose and blitzed the player she had momentarily confused for a Halfling. Unfortunately for her, C98 was no pushover as he had chiseled himself into a stone wall through untold hours in the gym. Adresin hit her target but the target did not move except to lower its shoulder and deliver its own punishing blow knocking her to the ground and knocking her senseless.

Unfortunately for C98, Deeproot decided to step in. He had never met a fling he could not toss so he grabbed C98 by the jersey lifting him a few inches of the ground into a face down prone position. Then with a grunt and a swing, with an underhand motion he tossed the ball carrying human as far down field as he could.

The elves had never seen a flying human, and C98 had never intended to fly. He did not fly far, and he was thoroughly unprepared to stick the landing. To his credit he did at least try to land on his feet. As he hit the ground his ankle twisted and the ball popped loose. Grabbing his ankle all he could do was watch as Kydeth picked up the ball and passed it to Revwe for the score that insured the win.

When the final whistle blew Kondor crossed the pitch and spoke to Coach Big F. The chunky Halfling smiled with a huge toothy grin. A few moments of conversation revealed that C98 had lost a bet to the Halfling Coach and had been required to play a string of games for Esmeralda’s Apron. This game marked the only time he had even touched the ball. Ironically, in this match he would be credited with scoring a casualty without even officially throwing a block and added to Esmeralda’s weekly newsletter for cracking Adresin’s skull.

Returning to the locker-room, Kondor shook his head. Even in a game against flings, the Archers could not escape C98.

The game had been a complete snooze fest yet now Kondor sat in the corner booth of the Shining Bauble watching the Archers celebrate after a draw. The visiting Chaos Dwarf team Shining Force coached by Hrothgor had been unable to do any damage, and the elves had only managed to score once. The fans from both teams went home frustrated and unfulfilled.

Yet they celebrated. Fame is such a fleeting thing and in the world of Blood Bowl even life is uncertain. With today’s score, Throthradir had been named a living legend within the league. The catcher joined Revwe, Kydeth, and Nienna on a platform that only a few players would ever reach. As a catcher she was one of the most well rounded players in the game. She blocked, dodged, tackled, and stripped the ball as well as anyone and her speed made her a constant threat to score.

As a testament to her skill she was a clear fan favorite having been named most valuable player more often than any High Elf currently playing the game.

Yet, if the celebration was not enough to turn Kondor’s stomach, the creature that sat next to him would do so. The changling spy, Xolaxlexa, had chosen today to pay him a visit. As always, the monster did the best she could to toy with his emotions. Today, the mostly hooded visage was that of his maternal grandmother. It was a face he had not seen since his childhood but it was one he could never forget. Somehow the imitator even managed to channel the rasping voice caused by decades of chain smoking titan weeds.

Kondor glowered over his glass of pomegranate juice directing an obvious look of disgust at his companion. The harsh voice from beneath the hood taunted. “Kondor my Pet Aardvark, haven’t you missed yer grams? Why in the world did she used to call you an aardvark? And since when are you a tea tottler?”

The glare continued and so did Xolaxlexa. “No matter. I have come on business to bring you the last dossier you asked for. This one was fun. I think you will find it very useful especially since the Archers seem to be prospering.”

Xolaxlexa passed him a scroll tube, but Kondor did not say a word.

“My…It looks like I struck a nerve this time. Don’t hold it against me. You know you are my favorite client.”

Having tired of the game and growing disturbed at Kondor’s silence Xolaxlexa let her features change. The age melted from the old woman and the white hair and skin darkened until the figure at the table took the form of generic looking twenty something attractive Westerner.

Only at that point did Kondor pull the small purse filled with painite crystals from inside his jacket. With Throthradir’s promotion he figured Xolaxlexa may make an appearance. He set the purse next to the woman and with an obviously pained inflection said, “This time you have gone too far.”

The woman tilted her head almost sympathetically and then reverted to a mocking smile. “You’ll get over it.” She said. “Contact me when you want my services again.”

Kondor watched her as she stood and walked to the door. Once she was gone he opened the dossier and read what was truly some enlightening information.

SUBJECT: Official Dossier – Throthradir Falavoul

FOR: Client – Name Confidential

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Race – High Elf, Completion – Pale, Hair – Platinum Blond, Eyes – Blue, Height – 190 cm, Weight – 75 kg, Age 79 years

BACKGROUND: Born in the slums of Fathnore to the house of Falavoul. Mother Anarzee Falavoul was a maid in the house of Larereta. Mother deceased 59 years ago. Father is unknown. Raised by human step-father Maxim Lamplighter now aged 73. Lamplighter is the head gardener of house Larereta. No known siblings.

STORY: Throthradir childhood took place largely in the Larereta manor. To say he grew up in the shadow of Revwe and her siblings would be to understate the facts. Rather, he was relentlessly tormented and beaten by Revwe’s brothers and forced into the most menial of tasks. The fact that his high elf family had fallen so low as to be servants in their home made it easy to justify their cruelty. Of the Larereta household, only the patriarch Captain Castien showed any compassion.

While Castien did not treat Throthradir well, he still demanded that every elf in his home should be trained with a blade and bow. Throthradir made the most of the requirement and excelled at both. Upon reaching the age of maturity he immediately joined the City Guard Force.

If the young elf believed his time in the Larereta manor would afford him an advantage amongst the guards he was mistaken. He was nicknamed Revwe’s Boy and tasked with the worst details. The fact that Revwe never recognized Throthradir had joined the guard force was irrelevant.

At last Throthradir could take the humiliation and scorn no longer so he resigned from the City Guard and picked up a job as messenger and equipment manager of the Nandorians. With the Nandorians, he was allowed to practice with the team from time to time and found the game enjoyable. He was able to vent his frustrations at life and pummel unsuspecting elves that clearly considered themselves to be his betters.

In time Throthradir was shocked when Revwe appeared on the practice squad of the Nandorians. He kept to himself and if Revwe ever recognized him she did never let anyone know it. When the Archers of Avelon were formed, Throthradir took a risk and tried out for the team. He was shocked when Revwe and the other founding menbers of the team pulled him aside and offered him a job as the second blitzer on the field.

As a blitzer, Throthradir’s career lasted 27 games with 6 scores and 10 casualties. Unfortunately in his 27th game he was niggled by an orc lineman on the opening play of the match. Due to his error on the field, the ball was freed and the Archers lost the match. Throthradir did not take the loss or the injury well. He took some time away from the field to recover and revamp his career. With the niggled shoulder he would never be a quality blitzer and without drastic measures he knew he would never be trusted on the team. He decided to transition. He would transition from Blitzer to Catcher and from male to female.

Eight months after leaving the Archers in disgrace he returned and applied for a job as a rookie catcher. With long flowing blond hair and a complete female appearance his commitment was beyond question and the Archers welcomed him to the field.

What is unknown to the Archers is that things with Throthradir are not as they seem. At the elf transition center in the town of Foggy Bottom Throthradir met Saraline Galwyn. He the depressed and unloved elf fell for human cleric that administered his transition potions. Due to the new found emotion and justified fear of the final procedure, he never completed the transition. Saraline now lives in the Merchant Sector of Avelon and is expecting his second child, while Throthradir lives in fear that Revwe will one day learn that he is not the complete female he purports to be.

SCOUTING REPORT: Throthradir’s only weakness is that of all High Elf catchers. He choose to take the field more lightly armored than his colleagues making him more fragile and opening him up to targeted attacks. Fortunately he has spent more time in the training room than most catchers and recently opposing players have learned that he is fully capable of delivering punishing blows.

HOBBIES: Throthradir has no real hobbies. He is dedicated to his family and his craft. On non-game days he will be found on the practice field or in the training room. However, his late afternoons and evenings are spent with his 6 year old son and adoring wife Saraline

END DOSSIER

Kondor looked took his eyes from the parchment and looked at the table of elves celebrating Throthradir's accomplishments and could not help but feel for Throthradir. The buxom blond had clearly suffered at the hands of Revwe more than anyone else. It may be a sign of weakness but Kondor knew that he could never reveal the secrets in the scroll to any of the other Archers of Avelon.

Now that is was a well schedule match.” Thought Kondor. Sure the Archers pulled off a win but they had paid for it in pain. Coach Jorj certainly chose his cattle well. Biquette proved that they were a team of more than pretty bovine. Bizou impressed with two of the teams five casualties inflicted while Bada made her presence known with four flagrant fouls before being caught by the referee. By the end of the match four starting Archers were seriously injured with broken bones and concussions.

Kondor shook hands with Coach Jorj at midfield, patted him on the back, and said “If your team plays like that regularly, I would love to arrange games regularly.”

Jorj just snorted and pointed at the scoreboard. “I don’t know, but at the very least we need a rematch.” He said with a smile.

The two shook hands and parted ways. This one could turn into a great rivalry.

It happened again. There seemed to be no way to stop it. Prior to facing the Mirkwood Minotaurs, Kondor took Revwe aside and told her he was aware of the plan to throw the game. She was to do her best to make sure that it didn’t happen. It did no good. Irerahaes broke Revwe’s arm with a vicious blitz before the first period had reached the mid-way point. From there it went downhill.

At least Ortalion was injured for her lack of effort. By not going full speed she was taken off guard and fell, awkwardly twisting her back. Kondor doubted she would ever fully recover.

The thrashing that followed was one that even the Archers had not expected. Sure they had agreed to lose the match but 3-0 was embarrassing. Arothaal would have laid a five spot on the Avelon squad had Throthradir not taken exception to his showboating and fired a cheap shot into his ribs.

No. This was not the match to finally bring Coach Nightbreed’s string of domination to an end. Perhaps next game Revwe would play the entire game. Perhaps next game Archer Armor would be effective. Perhaps Kondor was doomed and he would never see a victory versus his coaching nemesis.

The time had come to find out how much influence Kondor had over Revwe. Today’s game was against a team that had never found favor with Nuffle. Poor Slaapaav had done his best to coach the team of worthless goblins into something respectable but they simply lacked the concentration to pay attention to anything for the duration of a match. Still, a game against goblins normally resulted in full casualty boxes and the correlating full stands.

Kondor found Revwe and pulled her into a darkened corridor outside of the locker-room.

“Today Adresin Wyngella dies. Assign her as your partner for the match and if the opportunity appears, leave her high and dry.”

Revwe looked like she was going to protest but despite the obvious internal conflict not a word escaped her lips.

“Good.” Said Kondor. “Go about your business.”

Revwe returned to the locker-room and Kondor headed for his normal bench on the sideline to watch the match. Corbis had already arrived.

“Corbis. No heroics today. Do you understand?” asked Kondor.

Corbis shrugged. “I get paid the same either way.”

When the goblins took the field, they quickly got Kondor’s attention. They had pooled enough cash to hire the star troll Ripper. With any luck, this one could be a blood bath.

Neither the fans nor Kondor had to wait long for the action to start. Fenian took a kick from Bard in the goods causing what looked like a painful groin injury. However, before heading to the showers early, he found the end zone with the ball and earned his pay.

Near the end of the half came the moment of truth. The maniacal chain saw wielding goblin rushed into the fray swinging the blade with little care if elf, goblin, or troll came within reach. Adresin would have easily avoided the nut job had it not been for Revwe who gave her a nudge at the worst moment causing her to fall at the feet of the lunatic goblin.

Not believing his little green luck, the looney cackled with glee and began hacking. Only when the saw ran out of fuel did the ref dare approach the homicidal maniac and drag him off the field. Even in the penalty box he continued swinging the now useless saw over his head to the mixture of cheers and boos from the crowd.

The teams returned to the locker room and Revwe could do nothing but stare at the pitch. Kondor smiled. Fortunes had turned and now Kondor knew that he was truly in control of the Archers of Avelon.

Shining Force invaded Avelon Stadium with a chip on their shoulder and looking for blood. Coach Hrothgor was in no mood for mercy. The dark dwarf barked orders and the team did their best to follow directions. In their previous encounter the result was a draw and neither side had been able to draw blood. Nuffle willing, this match would be different.

Within minutes of the opening whistle, the dwarf lineman Ramladu served notice that he would be a Shining Force to be reckoned with. In a blitz of rage, he clubbed Khyrmn from behind with a gauntleted fist and as he hit the turf followed it up with a booted stomp on the throat. Unable to breath he clutched his throat and asphyxiated moments later. As Revwe Larereta scored she looked back to see her teammate covered with a sheet on the sideline.

Nienna did her best to avenge Khyrumn by breaking the centaur Mae’s arm and a dwarf’s squat neck, but she would have to settle for partial revenge.

As the clock ticked down, the rookie catcher found the endzone to secure the win but even that only brought pain. In this case, the pain fell squarely on Revwe. The hobgoblin Creed proved to be the MVP of the match when he bested the Archer team Captain Revwe by undercutting her and sending her tumbling awkwardly to the astrogranite. The blow to her head cracked her skull and opened the old injury healed by Kondor’s potion. Her head began to swell and the helmet had to be dismantled in order to remove it from her head.

On the sideline, Kondor stood over Revwe and examined the damaged elf as she lay unconscious.

“She will be back on the field in a couple of days.” Said Corbis. “However, no helmet will ever fit her again.”

Kondor responded. “So it seems. Very well. When she awakens, tell her that she will continue to play without a helmet, but Corbis, I expect you to tend to her wounds and make sure she heals as well as possible. Without a helmet, I wonder how long she can survive on the pitch.”

On the other side of the field, Hrothgor was only partially satisfied with the performance of his team. While they came up short on the scoreboard, they put the Archer Team Captain in the infirmary and killed one scrawny elf. All in all not bad for the day but not spectacular either. Perhaps the next match would go differently.

The Archers of Avelon had not been badge hunting in a while. But on this day, Nienna came to the team with a plan.

“I’ve been looking at our stats.” She began. “Kydeth has a shot at history if we help her out.”

She then picked up some chalk and began sketching on the drawing board.

------------------

To start the first half, the Archers received the ball. Kydeth immediately scooped it up and passed it to Throthradir who rushed back and handed the ball back to her.

The Orkhiastic Orkhestra was clearly confused. Just to make sense of things, a black orc broke the arm of a journeyman elf. His scream brought sense back to the world.

Kydeth once again passed the ball to Throthradir who handed it back to her, and they repeated the process three more times.

An announcement came over the loud speaker.

“Let it be known that Kydeth is the first High Elf blitzer in the history of Fumbbl to complete 50 passes in her carreer.”

Image

A collective rumble of admiration went through the crowd but before it could subside, Nienna signaled for the other part of her plan. She blocked an orc form her path. Ortalion dodged away from the orc marking her and blitzed away the orc that was covering Maylin. Vaeri dodged away from his marker and stepped to the endzone. With the pathway cleared, Kydeth passed to Maylin who ran over and handed the ball to Vaeri who received the handoff for a score.

An “Ahhh” went through the crowd as that play was truly complex.

Image

The orcs responded by breaking Fenian’s arm.

Coach Knut bashed heads and began reorganizing the greenskins only to have Nienna order a blitz. After moving some orcs out of the way, Throthradir reached the ball and took it upon himself to score putting the Archers ahead by two going into the second half.

In the second half, the Orkhestra was well organized and played an Orkhiastic second half. They methodically moved the ball and efficiently scored. Unfortunately, they were unable to Orkistrate a turnover to stop the elves, and ended up relinquishing a third score before the end of the game.

As the team returned to the clubhouse, Nienna grabbed Kondor by the arm.

“It has been a while since we tattooed your hide.” She said. “We will see you and Corbis at the Shining Bauble tonight. The entire team has earned one badge this afternoon, but you and Kydeth get a pair.”

Kondor just nodded his agreement and then turned to summon Corbis. Clearly he had seen better days.

Finally!!! This was the kind of match-up Kondor strived to schedule for the Archers of Avelon. Coach Malmir brought his Greek lizardmen to Avelon Stadium. For Kondor, it looked to be a lopsided matchup. The agile extra strong Apollo alone looked unstoppable, and the remaining Saurus were skilled tacklers who were impossible to mark and packed a nasty punch.

Neither Malmir nor the Greeks disappointed expectations. While they only managed one casualty, it killed Ortalion. Her death was a bitter sweet moment for Kondor. He was glad to see another dead elf, but this one had played 94 games which put her 13th in the all-time record books for a line elf.

The final score did not reflect the utter domination of the game. Sure Throthradir managed a lucky score, but the Archers were unable to ever really threaten the ball carrier.

At the end of the match, Kondor crossed the field and thanked Coach Malmir for the match. Perhaps next time they could schedule a softer matchup. Perhaps a matchup against the Chaos Dwarfs he called Colorful Characters.

The Archer of Avelon wagon train rolled into the dark Valley of Shadows. Ancient trees towered over the travelers. Mules struggled to pull the wagons through century old ruts worn in what had more recently become a little used valley road. At last the road simply became unpassable and the team picked up packs that carried their gear.

They traveled less than a mile on foot when they were greeted by a small contingent of elves. A dozen of them stood on tree limbs while one stood in the middle of the path. Kondor immediately recognized the “elf” on the valley floor as Coach Rbthma while those in the trees were the team known as the Howling Shadows.

The Archers also recognized their opponents and scanned the trees looking for the Wardancers. Meldalf was the first to recognize Amaron Greymoss and silently pointed him out to rest of the team with a slight nod in the dancer’s direction.

Kondor motioned for the team to put down their packs and explained that as part of the game contract, porters would take the equipment to the stadium and their personal items to their lodgings. While they were busy, he went to speak with Coach Rbthma.

“Thanks for the match Coach Rub the Man.”

Rbthma chuckled and shook his head no. Kondor still had not guessed the once high elf now rotter’s name.

Kondor continued. “This one is exactly what I am looking for. More humble pie for the high and mighty Archers of Avelon. Between your dancer and catchers, this one should be a walk in the park.”

Rbthma shrugged and started babbling and slurring incoherently while Kondor feigned understanding, nodded in apparent agreement, and then attempted to change the subject.

“The Archers will lodge in the lower level of the trees. Corbis and I will sleep in the visiting coach’s office at Shady Stadium. Are they still making you sleep in the barren hole near the latrine?

Rbthma raised both hands as if to ask what more could be done and then waived a hand to dismiss what he no longer took as a problem. The fact was that for him to be a coach of a wood elf team was more unbelievable as the human Kondor coaching a High Elf team. Amongst the living there was a healthy fear of the Nurgle Rot and for woodies to even let him in the forest was a testament to his coaching skill. The fact that he was once an elf was the only reason he was even considered for the job.

The coaches retired to Rbthma’s hole for drinks while the Archers of convened in their own lodgings to plot strategy. Only Kydeth was absent choosing not to associate with the Kill Team aspect of the Archers of Avelon.
This time Throthradir took the lead and in a husky voice related the intelligence he had gathered.

“These lads are skilled and not to be underestimated. If we are to win, we must target the catchers. Those blokes will not be shaken by a crowd and you can expect them to dump it if they are pressured. They are quick and if we are not careful they will outmaneuver us. We won’t be able to play a ball control match either. The dancers are good tacklers and will likely strip the ball away. Our best chance is for Nienna to carry it and get it to one of the catchers as soon as she feels pressure.”

“What about bounties?” Fenian queried.

“There isn’t much.” Throthradir responded. “You could probably get a nice meal if you were to take out one of the catchers. They have made a few enemies but nothing to truly target. Your best bet is the dancer Greymoss. A local merchant wants him dead for undefined scandalous behavior. My bet is the merchant is a jilted lover but who know what her issue is with him. In any case, it may be worth collecting if the opportunity presents itself.”

The plotting continued through the night and well into morning but the game itself went nothing like either coach had planned.
---------------------
Two days later the Archer wagon train was moving again. As it exited the forest it took the left fork in the road and began a long journey towards the Tillean Coast where Kondor had arranged a pair of games against quality opponents.

In the front wagons, the team chatted politely amongst themselves. They were in exceptionally good spirits as only a few bandages marked the minor bruises from the game the previous day. Laughter could even be heard in the wagon reserved for baggage. Kondor and Corbis sat near the entrance but in the front of the wagon they had a companion. When Coach Rbthma learned the team was going to Tilea, he paid handsomely for transportation. The Farsea Shades were a pro elf team he coached and he had received word to meet them in the Northern Port of Tilea.

Corbis and Kondor were careful to keep Rbthma in the front corner of the wagon and stay as far away as possible. No one knew exactly how Nurgle Rot spread, and having him in the same wagon for a few days was a mighty risk. Still he had paid five times the normal fair for transportation so it was a difficult offer to turn down.

At last the mule train reached the main road to Tillea and the ride became tolerably smooth. Kondor fished a large jar from a travel bag and rolled it to Rbthma.

“I wanted you to have this.” Said Kondor.

Opening the jar, Rbthma sniffed it and winced at the sweetness then cast a questioning look at Kondor.

“It’s a medicinal powder.” Stated Kondor. “Absorbs moisture. I heard a new rotter complaining once that the worst thing about his condition was the crotch rot. Said it itched so terribly and he was tempted pull off body parts. I don’t know if the rot has taken those bits from you but perhaps this will ease some of your itching.”

Coach Rbthma smiled immediately and awkwardly attempted to stand in the wagon before deciding it was better to kneel. He pulled the draw string from his trouser and poured a dose of the turquoise powder inside. A dozen flies fled the loosened trousers and Rbthma settled back into the corner. Moments the most satisfying sigh of relief gurgled from his gaping mouth.

“You might want to tell him about the side effects.” Said Corbis.

Kondor shook his head negatively. “No. Let him enjoy the moment. Nothing should sprout from his trousers until he has been in Tillea for a couple of days. By that time we will be long gone, and I have the suspicion it may be a pleasant surprise for a rotter.”

“What did you think of the Match?” Kondor continued.

“Don’t much care one way or the other.” Said Corbis. “Kind of nice not to have to restock the medicine bag though.”

“Makes sense. Did you notice Revwe collected another bounty? Once Amaron Greymoss went down she garroted him at mid field. There was not even an attempt to disguise it. If all of the action had not been on the catchers in the endzone there would have been a riot and none of us may have escaped the wrath of the fans. She is alarmingly unpredictable.”

Corbis agreed. “Perhaps you should have a word with her. You have been very persuasive lately.”

Kondor cocked his head a little and then leaned against the gate of the wagon. Perhaps Revwe did need a little more direction.

Outside of the Northern Port of Tillea sits a mamouth colony of Nurgle Rotters. It is similar to the one you will find outside of any large city in the Old World. The sad fact is that despite the most advanced efforts by apothecaries to prevent the disease the number of infected grows every year. Normally, the infection can be traced from one individual to the next and thus follow a “genealogical line” back to some of the original carriers a millennia ago.

However, at times, the cause of the rot cannot be found. Lethal Kid is one such victim. The Kid was originally known as Cornelius “the Love Hammer” Hallivan. At the age of 16 he was drafted by Nuffle’s Knights to serve as the backup catcher. Due to his charisma, good looks, and ball handling abilities he quickly became a favorite of the Knight’s female fans.

Unfortunately, Hallivan only played two seasons and not once did they play against a Nurgle squad yet one day he noticed a broken finger that refused to heal. Soon it festered and in the coming months he self-diagnosed that he was infected with the rot. As the disease spread up his arm he took it upon himself to contact Coach Rbthma. Rbthma was the longest living rotter anyone had ever heard of and it was rumored that he had stopped the progress of the disease.

Rbthma examined the limb and confirmed that it was the rot. A tourniquet was placed above his bicep to kill the limb and then it was infused with an elixir produced in Rbthma’s lab. As with Rbthma, Hallivan was not cured, but the progress of the disease slowed dramatically. Rbthma’s diagnosis is that he has a decade before the disease infects his brain.

Once he resigned himself to his fate, “the Love Hammer” moved on in life. In fact he embraced the rot and changed his name to Lethal Kid before moving to the colony outside of Tillea. He immediately realized that a one armed catcher would be useless so he turned to coaching. In the colony he found more talent than he imagined and decided to found a team he innocuously titled The Common Cold.

Rbthma and the Kid have kept in touch so when the Archers of Avelon reached Tilea an introduction was made and a match was arranged. The Common Cold was more dangerous than it first appeared. Eight Archers were knocked out over the course of the match and three other were either badly hurt or seriously injured. Flat footed and unprepared, the Archers of Avelon suffered a lop sided 2-1 defeat.

When the Archer wagon train resumed its journey to Tillea the mood had swung from the high after an unexpectedly good game in the Valley of Shadow to the low of simply being thrashed.

Before climbing back into the baggage cart, Kondor thanked Rbthma for introducing him to the Kid. With any luck he would be able to schedule a rematch and see the elves pounded once again.

Predictably, the Archers of Avelon checked into Tilean Treasures, the most expensive tavern in the region. With the match scheduled to occur in two days, the team had time to rest and recover from the beating they had taken earlier in the week.

Once settled, Corbis led Kondor to their rendezvous with Coach Arturidas near a refuse pile in the Fish District. As arranged, Corbis provided large flask filled with glowing warpstone wine. The skaven coach twitched involuntarily from time to time as he outlined the details of the match to come. Once the conditions were arranged, Kondor tipped his hat to his fellow coach and returned to the tavern.

As appointed, when the sun set two days later, the Archer team met Arturidas at the refuse pile. He pointed to an open sewer grate a few yards away indicating that they should enter. The proud high elves began to protest and refused to enter the odiferous tunnel.

Kondor looked at Revwe and seemed to almost beg. “Revwe, Please lead the Archers to the match.”

She looked at the crew and beckoned them to follow then stepped into the covert. The Archers sat stunned for a moment until they hear her voice beckon. “Let’s go! We have a game to play.”

The others continued to grumble but begrudgingly followed. Coach Arturidas lead them consistently downhill in what seemed to be a mostly right handed gradual spiral. Once they intersected with a larger tunnel the turning ceased but they continued to descend. Eventually they could hear crowd noise in the distance and they knew the game was afoot.

Abruptly Arturidas took a right turn down a little used tunnel and soon opened the door to what was obviously a locker room. There are three matches today, and yours will be the main event. Get ready and then follow the tunnel at the back of the room. It will take you to box seats overlooking the stadium. It is early in the first match and if you hurry, you can spectate.

Once Arturidas left, the Archers dressed and went to their assigned box seats. When they stepped into the room, they were awed by the spectacle. This was the grand stadium of the Undertillea. The cavern was larger than Avelon Stadium and equaled any place they had ever played. Goblins, dark elves, skaven, orcs, trolls, and unnamed underworld denizens crowded the stands and bellowed for blood.

On the field, a pair of hapless goblin teams provided the expected entertainment. Bombs exploded, saws sliced and a pair of fanatics ran into each other and strangled themselves with balls and chains. It was indeed great fun.

The second game of the trio featured two young teams. A witch elf squad battled a team from Clan Moulder. The fans were rabid. Witches, Slaves, and even a rat ogre were pushed into the murderous hands of the fans who lined the pitch. Still it was clear that the agility of the elves that remained would be sufficient to win the match.

Once the second game ended the Archers were called down to the field. They took the pitch to a resounding chorus of boos. There is a saying that no one likes an elf and the thousands of fans made that fact abundantly clear.

The Archers were nervous, but Revwe tried to calm them. “Our safety outside of the game has been insured. If we survive the match and the fans on the sidelines, everyone will make it back to the tavern for frit and wine. Just play the beautiful game and watch each other’s backs.”

The team Arturidas brought to the field was rightly named the Company of Terror. Claws and tentacles sprouted from a troll. A pair of skaven blitzer sported gripping claws that helped with tackling but could also easily rend armor. Every night goblin seemed to giggle as it sharpened the spikes on it stompers.

Kydeth rushed to a beverage merchant in one corner of the endzone and after a little haggling returned with a couple of kegs of bloodweiser. If the stuff was the real deal, it would be brewed in a troll still and bottled with a little warpstone. It would help regenerate some minor wounds and heal minor injuries in moments.

Nienna looked at the situation and laide out a quick game plan. “It looks like they are kicking to us. Score as late in the half as we can and then we play for a steal in the second half. Basic High Elf game strategy 101.”

That is exactly how the game went with only a few hiccups. Early in the first half as Revwe tried to fend off Balonazos the savage bit her hand cracking bones. Unfortunately, the bloodweiser was not enough to fix the damage. A kick in the mid-section from Bosquimano put the rookie Ecaeris on the next to Revwe. Kydeth scored near the end of the half but the elves were outgunned in the second half. They were simply unable to prevent the equalizing score.

After taking more than 50 blocks and 9 fouls the game finally ended in a well-earned draw. Coach Arturidas brought a contingent of fully armored storm vermin to surround the field as the game came to a close. As promised, the dozen elves were escorted to the changing room and then back to their tavern.

Arturidas seemed happy with the draw. The stadium had been filled and elves had been broken. He spoke to Kondor before they parted ways. “Come back next time you are in Tilea. Everyone hates an elf and the fans will line up to watch us crush them. This will be a very profitable arrangement.”

Kondor handed Arturidas a complimentary bag of green powdery snuff. “Agreed. The outcome was acceptable. Once the elves lick their wounds they will want a rematch. Good luck in your next game. May Nuffle favor La Compañia del Terror.

Kondor was nervous. He had broken one of his lifelong rules. Never bet large on your own team, and more recently, never, ever bet big on the Archers of Avelon to win. Now he was in a situation where he had to cheer FOR the damnedable elves. Worse. If they lost the game, he would lose the bet to…..c9805222.

He should have known better. C98 looked too confident placing the wager. A loss would bankrupt Kondor not to mention the side bet. A loss would put him in the witch elf Hera’s chamber for the weekend.

But if they won, his fortune would be made, and C98 would send Hera to Kondor’s estate for the weekend. The difference in the side bet may seem minor but it made all the difference in the world. At his estate he could control the situation. At Hera’s he would likely wind up dead or at least stretched on a rack and violated.

Bahhh…How could he be as foolish as to place a bet with crime lord know for racketeering and game fixing? To make matters worse it was an away game held at The Lifting Bros Gym and Stadium. Home crowd of lifters and referees would certainly play a negative role in the match.

Kondor hurried to the field for the pre-game warm up. He had never cared for it before but this was important. A hapless snotling was doing one handed pushups on the sideline. Kondor kicked it down field a few yards and hurried to his appointed seat to watch the match.

Unlike most occasions he decided it was best not to sit next to c98. This was game 600 for the heavy lifting brothers and game 100 for the Archers. Neither team wanted to be on the losing end of this one.
-------------------------

Good evening Blood Bowl Fans and welcome to a historic Cabalvision Event as the The Archers of Avelon have traveled to The Lifting Bros Gym and Stadium to take on Do You Even Lift Bro. My name is Rhys ‘Sidearm’ Gilroris and I will be your announcer on this glorious occasion.

And my name is Neesha Aludra one of the founding members of the Archers of Avelon. Tonight’s match up brings together two old rivals. While the heavy lifting brothers have not yet bested the Archers they have certainly come close and inflicted heavy damage in the process. In their four previous engagements, the ogres have killed four Archers and seriously injured five others. You have to be either a very courageous or very foolish elf to take the field tonight.

Neesha, I would say that is a very good assessment of the situation. Not that I would ever do it, and not that I hope Eastwood would act on my bet, but you could certainly place a side wager that perhaps Vardan would die tonight.

Anyway, enough about wagers you simply have to look at the Lifting Brothers’ Sideline. Coach c98 is stalking the sideline barking orders and booting snotlings. He is serious tonight. And yet, I think he is smiling. Do you think he anticipates the kill or do you think he plans to win this one?

Who cares Rhys? Just look at that outfit he is wearing. Golden armor fit for a king encrusted with jewels and inlayed with platinum. He just shines. That is audacious. That is glorious. That is sooo tacky. And it looks like rumors are true. He is only wearing the armor today. You can tell when the chain mail chafes and he has to make an adjustment. We can only pray that he keeps the chainmail on for the entire match. This is after all watched by thousands of halflings and children.

We can only pray Neesha. On the other hand, look at Kondor on the Archer bench. He is normally very serene. Today he too stalks the sidelines. Clearly he is nervous. What is he looking at? He has locked eyes with the witch that serves as an assistant coach for the Bros. That would make me nervous too. There are many, many rumors surrounding that hag.

To the contrary, the Archer Team Captain looks absolutely placid. There was speculation that Revwe would play in this match but her injured hand did not heal as quickly as the Apothecary Corbis had expected. As part of a game time decision, she will be on the sideline hopefully encouraging her teammates to victory.

To start the match the Archers will kick the ball. It is in the air and in the hands of You Say What. War has him and just as quickly he and the ball are flying down the field. He STUCK the landing and is in the end zone. In the history of the game, I don’t think anyone has scored any quicker.

On the sideline, c98 is doing a celebratory hand stand. I apologize to our viewers a he really should be wearing clothing under that chainmail.

The ball is in the air again, and this time it is in the hands of the hands of Nienna the Archers’ legendary thrower and a heavy lifting dame. The Archers maneuver down field. What a beautiful legend to legend completion! Throthradir is in the endzone.

Again the ball is kicked to the Lifters. This time it is in the hands of Voodoo. Voodoo retreats towards his endzone while the ogres begin to pummel some elves. Now this is War. And when I say that, I mean a blitzing War has just leveled an elf and the elf in not moving. Neesha, did you see what happened?

Yes Rhys I did. Unfortunately, that was War’s patented multiple block body slam. Vardan was pushed out of the way and then War crushed Jharak into the turf. Not much chance he will get up from that one…..wait…..yes I was correct. The associate referee has pronounce him dead so play will continue on around the corpse.

Thanks Neesha that is unfortunate. It seems that War confused Jharak for Vardan. It is easy to do in the heat of the game. Look. Kydeth is putting pressure on Voodoo. He better do something before he gets splattered. It is a HAIL MARY PASS from the Lifter touch line. On the other end, the Swiss Army Snot has moved to the touch line and SCORES with a DIVING CATCH!

Unbelievable! A snotling to snotling Hail Mary for the score. You will not see that play again for another thousand games….or perhaps you will see it again tonight. For the love of all that is Nuffle’s someone get c98 some underwear!

There is still time left in the first half of play. Nienna has the ball again and moves it down the field. This time Kydeth makes a dash for the endzone on her gimpy legs. What a beautiful long pass for another legend to legend score to end the half. The crowd is on its feet and Kondor has fainted on the sideline. This may be more than he can take. Someone send a medic with some smelling salts.

As the teams take a break we have seen four scores in the first half. And now a word from the Cabalvision Sponsors.
------------------------

The second half is about to get underway and Revwe can be seen talking to Nienna and Vardan. Hopefully the plan is a good one because if the Archers do not find the endzone on this drive they will probably lose the match.

Kondor is seriously sweating. The witch Hera is blowing him kisses and making hand gestures that while outlandish have clear crude undertones. Do you believe that? He has fainted again. Kondor has fainted again! What a gesture of sportsmanship. Coach c98 has sent Hera to the Archer sideline to look after Kondor in the dugout. Who knows if Kondor will ever recover?

The second half has begun and once again Nienna has the ball. She is maneuvering down the field and looking for an open catcher. No one is available! Eastwood has knocked Fenian out of the game and has his sights set on Nienna. The rush is coming but Nienna has cleared the ball to an elf down field. It looks like Maylin but I cannot be sure as an ogre is standing in my field of vision.

Yes. It is Maylin and she will scamper into the endzone with War pursuing. She has scored but War will not accept it. He is pummeling the elf even after the whistle has blown for the score. It is not exactly a foul since the ball is not in play. The ref does not know what to do. Now War is stomping on Maylin. Someone stop this unnecessary violence! The ref is wagging his finger vehemently and War has finally relented and will return to his place to await the coming kick off. Maylin is being dragged to the dugout. She is alive but I have no idea how that is possible.

The Archers have again kicked off and again Voodoo has the ball. Again he is retreating to his endzone. This time the Archers know the game plan and have marked the Swiss Army Snot as well as they can. Nienna herself has decided to go after Voodoo to prevent another miracle play. Voodoo is under pressure and knows he is about to get pummeled. He cocks his arm to throw and….drops the ball at Nienna’s feet. What a gift for the Archers. Nienna blasts him for his troubles, picks up the ball, and scores. Now each of the Archer legends have scored, and that play should put the game away. There is still time to try and toss a midget but even if the Lifters score, it will not matter.

And that is all! The epic match is in the books. It is all you could have asked for. Beauty and beasts. Poise and mayhem. War and Eastwood. Nienna and Kydeth. You may never see a match like that one again. Thanks for tuning in to Cabalvision here in the Gym. This is Rhys ‘Sidearm’ Gilrois bidding you farewell until the next Archer of Avelon match.
-------------------------

Kondor awoke in the Archer dugout and heard a low buzzing noise. Slowly he opened his eyes to see a witchelf holding a tomato with a wild grin from ear to ear. It was more than he could take. The world began to spin and faded back to black.
