hello,
i don't know if this topic has already been discussed around, if yes, feel free to point me there.

As i have seen with the last server campaign and updates, it looks like Christer is the single point of failure. Meaning if tomorrow Christer is hit by a bus and is not able to handle fumbbl, our whole world will collapse.

Is there a backup plan ? is there someone or some entity capable of taking it if/when Christer will give up on fumbbl ?

I started a thread with the same topic (although instead of bus it was a more likely scenario: alien abduction), but no answer came from that sadly.

While I'm seriously hoping I won't get hit by a bus, it probably wouldn't be great for the site if I did.

But let's step back a bit from the terminal stuff..

If I were to "give up" on the site, i.e. get so tired of it that I didn't want to have anything to do with it, it'd be a matter of me transferring the site to someone who wanted to take over.

While I'm sure there are a few people who thinks that would be great and all, it's really difficult to find someone who would actually want to do the work required to run the technical aspects of the site. It's not a trivial task by any means.

So if I were to get really sick of the site, I'd try to find someone else to host the system and realistically it'd end up being somewhat neglected because of the massive undertaking such a project would be. Normal people don't want to spend the amount of time I spend on a project that isn't profitable.

Now, if I were to suddenly be put into a state where I was not capable of communicating at all, things would be much harder. I do have family members who has the technical know-how to log in to the machines even without the passwords given physical access (e.g. boot linux into single-user mode, change the root password, etc).

At that point, the same process would have to take place, but with someone else managing it. This would be even more likely to put the site into the wrong hands.

So are there contingency plans? Sort of. Are they good? Not really.

Without sounding elitistic or tooting my own horn, it's actually really really hard to find people who are both capable and willing to do what I do with the site. As I said, it's a lot of work for very little benefit. I'm running the site because I more or less consider it my hobby, and to keep learning new technologies. Plus I like the game and the community as well.

Thanks Christer for your massive commitment and for everything.

I would like to ask a question which might be anathema to some site members, maybe including you, so if I freak out or offend anyone I apologise in advance. That's not my intention and no one is obliged to explain themselves. A simple no or no answer is fine.

So, the question is:

Is selling or contracting the site at some point an option? Handing it over to a team paid to maintain?

Of course there would be complications with commercialisation and a paying model, and the site would lose some members. But as seen recently with the Deeproot drive, dedicated members are happy to pay for fumbbl. The integrity and quality at the heart of fumbbl - purism is the best possible sense of the word - are what set it apart from and above alternatives. For Blood Bowl fans fumbbl can't be beaten, because it is Blood Bowl itself fully implemented, with no compromises on 'AI' opponents or on the sometimes harsh rules.

If fumbbl were to be sold, it's future would depend on whether it also 'sold out'. If the basic model were to change, the fan base would likely drain away, because what makesit special would no longer exist. But if it stays as it is and should be, fumbbl will always be supported, even if the torch is passed.

Viva Christer! Viva fumbbl!

Noone in their right mind would buy FUMBBL and leave it as-is. There's no profit, and a LOT of work that gets done on a voluntary basis.

For example: In the last week or so, I've spent *all* of my free time (meaning when I'm not at work or sleeping) on the new hardware. A rough estimate would be 60 hours or so.. In an enterprise setting, that's massively expensive.. And I still have lots of things remaining to do with that..

That being said, if someone approached me offering to buy the site for a big number (as in some multiple of my yearly salary), I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't at least consider it.

I don't think a "one guy" backup solution is a good solution. A better and viable solution would be a backup team !
If no one would take your job as it may cost 60 hours for no gold piece, a team of 6 would be happy to spend 10 hours each and get a part in this "no gold piece".

A tournament team, a server administrators team, a Java team, a webmaster team, a Rules team ... with one or more members in each team. Is it possible ?
