blodge side stepping guard vampires are awesome. Although I go with pro instead of tackle.

Pro is a vampire's best friend.

Pro is a vicious circle.

Pro doesn't reliably help when blitzing a dodgy ball carrier (or else) like Tacle does. It doesn't toughen your opponent's choices of plays (in fact, Pro is a total non-factor to deal with for opponents). It doesn't hinder dodgy player's or ball carrier's movement. It doesn't synergize with Diving Tacle. By ricochet, since dodgy players can freely escape Pro, it forces you to constantly reposition your Vampires somewhere relevant... This constant need for reactivation makes Pro even more desirable to spam. Pro isn't a Vampire's best friend, it's a Vampire's costly wife.

By forfeiting Pro for Tacle you gain better blitzers and man-markers spread more evenly across the field, saving you some dramatic plays who'll steal your rerolls. You also gain better passive Vampires that you don't have to constantly activate... negating the usefulness of Pro. Finally, for a dramatic play, using a team reroll is far more reliable than Pro (50% success odds is poor at blood bowl). And if you lost your team reroll to a Bloodlust, you still benefit from Tacle. If you succeed your Bloodlust (and there's far more chances that you will than not), you'll have both a reroll and Tacle which is a far better combo than a reroll and Pro.

tackle is for the thralls.

Pro does hinder your opponent because it amplifies hypnotic gaze, increasing your ability to get your wrestle stripball or wrestle tackle thrall on the ball carrier and decreasing his options.

But the main point here is Vampires, despite only having two types of players, are usually the most diversely built teams in bloodbowl. There are so many routes to build.

Hi everyone. I've been following this thread with great interest but there's something I'm trying to figure out. If you have 6 vampires on your team, how do you handle the set up on defensive drives? With only 5 thralls on the pitch, do you put 3 of them on the line, or try to absorb some hits with a vampire instead? I suppose it will depend on what you're up against, but if you have some pointers for me I'd be all ears.

The Pro vs. no Pro debate has been covered several times on the forums, but I'm too lazy to search. Tarabaralla and The_Provocateur used to be the benchmark, they ran without Pro spam. But lately, kingvan and Harad have won Majors with Vampires and they both do the Pro spam. I think it's fair to say that both approaches are valid.

(Said the guy who has 2 games with Vampires.)

Unless my opponent is full of tackle claw mightyblow, I'll put 3 vampires on the frontline. Ideally all blodge guard side step. Then two thralls nearby to limit assists against them.

I know this thread isn't active anymore but there is a lot of great opinions and info for anyone starting vampire team. I just started using them a couple of weeks ago I'm so glad I bothered to open this 'old' thread.

Me, personally I started out with three vampires and the rest thralls and I dumped the rest in to rerolls. I believe it was five? That worked out pretty well for me. Now I have six Vampires on the team but I usually only play four on the pitch most of the time. There are a few times where I will have five if I'm feeling saucy and the only time I have six on the pitch is when a lot of the Thralls are KO'd or injured and I have no choice.

With the vampires themselves I always grabbed dodge and block first unless I get a stat upgrade. MA is good and AV is even better because not only does that help with advancement in the field it also helps with Hypnotic Gaze. I never got a strength upgrade option and every time I got an AV upgrade choice I always chose the MA or the AV upgrade instead.

I have one Vampire where I took Mighty Blow instead and while he's awesome I'm thinking you don't really need a specialist vampire because of how bloodlust can affect your game plan. One moment you're hoping to knock someone out but he decides he wants to go into bloodlust and you just so happen to not have enough Thralls to go around. At that point do you do the reroll that you were saving for another vamp to get closer to the end zone or do you just use it to knock that guy out? It'd be awesome if you can have it both ways but in this case bloodlust just doesn't allow that. So now you gotta scrap your original plan, reposition your guys, and go for plan B which might not be as awesome as your plan A. I think vampires are good enough without having to specialize them to get any job you want done. Just giving them blodge makes them incredibly good already. From there you can pretty much do what you want.

If anything I'd say start with three on the pitch and see how it goes from there. When they can keep their bloodlust in check they are freaking amazing. Technically with each vamp you have on the pitch you kind of sort of have an additional blitz in the form of Hypnotic Gaze. No other team gives you that. BUT when you just get bad rolls the team just breaks down. I tried having six vamps on the pitch one time and the whole team just imploded because I got bad roll after bad roll. It actually looked like the vamps were playing for the other team and they went through my Thralls like my dog goes through hamburgers. It was so bad it was glorious.

As a team I find they are really good at the beginning of the game. But as the game goes on and your Thrall numbers go down due to the other team or your own vamps the team starts to gas out and this is where I think it's better to start out with just three vamps. Anything more than that when you start out your team will start cannibalizing itself to the point where the other team won't even have to worry about yours because the vamps are doing the heavy lifting for them already. Once you get used to managing the vamps and the original three have blodge is when I would start thinking about adding more to the pitch.

Every Vamp should have Block Dodge and Pro.

They should always be your first three skills (in any order you like). Obviously take the stat up's when they are offered. After those 3 you can make them into a safety with diving tackle and side step/stand firm or a hitter with mighty blow and tackle. If you happen to get an AG+ vamp take leap. Leaping on a 2+ with pro will keep your opponent on their heels even if you never use the skill. Once you understand how and more importantly when to use leap I bet you find yourself using it several times again.

I would definitely work my way up to having 6 vamps and fielding all 6 but I would start with 3 or 4. Once all of them have the base 3 skills (B,D,P) then you can start by adding one vamp at a time until that player has all 3 skills as well. Rinse and Repeat. If you have 5/6 Vamps keep a few extra thralls on the team at all times. (12-15 roster size)

I'm not very good with vampires but i disagree with what was said above.

I like them having roles. And killer-vamp is one of the earliest ones i like to differentiate from that blodgepro-thingy i do with _most_ of the vamps.

Instead he picks: block mb tackle dodge pro (in that order unless he also picks skills, if his role is changed because of extra +ag or +st then i will start new vamp that gets "killskillroute").

Another role i like to do is surfer. His skills should be: block frenzy sidestep juggernaut dodge (dodge could be picked somewhere before too).

I don't like them ALL to start with same skills.. its boring and for me, for my style it wouldn't work as well as this "role"-mentality does

If you want to minmax, i feel 3 is ideal in the Box when the vamps average 3+ skills. You won't meet many killers and the vamps can really dominate. Now....
