I am having trouble deciding the best action to take after a deep kickoff vs finesse teams, especially when they muff the pickup. Usually it will have a thrower back deep with/near the ball, a scrum near the LoS, and a couple fast things downfield. The options in my mind:

- attack. get your fast things deep between the scrum and the ballcarrier, engage the scrum with the slow stuff. Forces an INT chance to pass into the scrum, or forces the scrum to double back to support the ball carrier.

- engage. Mark everyone on the field to prevent the opponent from making any meaningful formation without lots of dodges.

- screen. Mark the downfield recievers, and leave a screen in front of the scrum. Allow them to form a cage but isolate the recievers for a beat down.

What is the best way to go folks? Any options other than these three?

It will depend a lot on the spesifics of their team and yours, but very, very generally my suggestion is what you call "screen". Mark and blitz those receivers, maybe even foul them. Dealing with fast elfy teams is about managing their scoring threat - stopping them if you can, otherwise forcing the score ASAP.

Counterattacking can also work, particularly if you are fast yourself, but it is very high-risk. If it doesn't work, the opponent probably gets to score, or even outmaneuver your team and elf-stall in your backfield.

"Engaging" I think (again, very generally) is the worst strategy. It gives away lots of blocks, weakens your team's formation and if the opponent is lucky enough to make those "lots and lots of dodges" (most of which will be 2+) they will be able to play their game with impunity and you will be out of position.

SHORT ANSWER:

Turn 1: Kill something.

Turn 2: Kill something else.

Turn 3: Receive Ball.

Longer answer.

If they are sending their fast things downfield more than a couple squares. THAT is who you kill. Take out some of that extra speed. And in this case DO man-mark as much as you can IF (IF IF IF) your AV, Guard and Mighty Blow is your advantage.
IF not SCREEN. Keep their scrum from moving forward by more than 1 square. Make them engage with you so you can Block them all down the next turn.

If you don't have the speed to go toe-to-toe on speed don't attack UNLESS (UNLESS) you have weak AV. If you are Norse this might be a good way to force an early score. But IN GENERAL a pressure attack on Turn 1 only works for Elves and Skaven... and maybe Humans and Slann maybe Necro etc.
