Hello, hello! It's time for the NBFL Season XXII Draft Preview!

For those of you new to FUMBBL or living under a rock, the NBFL is the premier Americas time league. A semiannual NFL parody with 32 franchises, we boast a draft from graduating NCBB classes.

Right now, the Season XXI playoffs are going on, and it's time to unveil the draft board for Season XXII. Unlike recent seasons, which have attempted to take advantage of the most recent draft classes, I have decided to take a blast from the past, and as NBFL Draft Commissioner, I made the executive decision to draw from NCBB Season XII, which ran from October 2011 to March 2012. So we'll see some nifty players from throwback squads in the NBFL. There are even a couple Piling On players to be had!

This may be the first season that we have had no coaching turnover: not all 32 coaches have declared their intentions for next season, but nobody seems likely to quit. As a result, the early draft order is likely fixed. If anyone does leave, replacement coaches will draft together in a cluster at 24.5 Victory Points (.250 VP percentage given a 14-game season with 7-3-0 scoring), between MrNomad and Arktoris. Some teams may rebuild, but non-playoff squads that rebuild use their coach's draft status. Assuming all coaches remain in the NBFL, only playoff teams being scrapped and rebuilt can alter this order, and if this happens they draft in VP order as non-playoff teams, losing all tiebreakers against non-playoff teams.

Draft order is in ascending VP order from Season 21, with all forfeited matches counted as wins for VP calculation. Playoff squads draft after non-playoff squads, organized by round of elimination, and within VP order beyond that. See the league page (link above) for tiebreakers. This season, the Dulles Howlboys are returning to the league and will use their 73 earned draft VP from their last season of participation.

The NBFL draft is built around position groups: Line, Skilled, Blitzer, Strength, and Big Guy. There is a table indicating what position groups correspond to which positions going into and out of the draft (they're not necessarily the same). Not all players fit into one position: some players can be drafted from any of two or three positions, while some NBFL positions allow drafting from two or three different groups.

This season, the NBFL main draft has 60 players:

23 Line players:

2 Line/Strength players:

7 Skill players:

4 Skill/Blitzer players:

3 Blitzer players:

1 Skilled/Blitzer/Strength player:

9 Blitzer/Strength players:

4 Strength players:

7 Big Guy players:

Stay tuned for draft order and position analysis!

No clear cut #1 and deep with players. A couple gems and more than a few interesting talents. I like it. I'll like even more if I draft 32nd Wink

Assuming no coaching departures or retirements among playoff teams, the draft order for the top 20 picks (and my top-10 mock) will be:

1 captainmalkor, Arizona Cards (Khemri). Malkor has talked about restarting with Daemons of Khorne, but has also considered returning his Khemri squad. The Khemri need all the help they can get at any position, but will have some expansion draft picks in compensation to make up for their desperation.
Jackass Mock: Frank Reddic, Blitz-Ra. If he rebuilds, Who Gives A D*mn would make a fun Bloodthirster.

2 GotrekSlayer, Titannesse Kraken's (Nurgle). Gotrek, like Malkor, is a newcomer with an underwhelming squad that could use help at several positions. But he didn't take nearly as bad a thrashing over his rookie season, so he can go for a more luxury player.
Jackass Mock: Who Gives A D*mn, Rotspawn. If he's off the board, Frank Reddic will be a Pestigor.

3 MrNomad, Indianapolis Crypts (Undead). This is a hard format for an Undead team, and MrNomad will doubtless draw upon the high quality level at the top of the Big Guy board to make a splash in the difficult AFC South.
Jackass Mock: Matthew Pritchett V, Mummy.

4 Arktoris, Kansas City Thiefs (Chaos Renegades). Arktoris is an old hand in the NBFL, but the Thiefs are a young squad still on their way up. With three quality bigs, they're probably looking for a competent Marauder or Renegade.
Jackass Mock: Robert "Bad" Kough, Skaven Renegade.

5 Wolvezzz, Bucking Buccaneers (Chaos Dwarfs). The Bucs are looking strong across the board... except at the most important position: one Bull is brand-new, while the other is a developmental player.
Jackass Mock: Chrisss McPain, Bull Centaur.

6 Kryten, San Dogo Chompers (Humans). The Chompers lost two legends this season, and their Season XXI draft pick died young, which led to their collapse. However, coach Kryten has quietly built a solid backup squad with just enough holes to suggest room for improvement.
Jackass Mock: Spawn Orkman, Blitzer.

7 Namloc, Buffalo Psycho Billies (Chaos Dwarfs). The Psycho Billies are loaded, with quality players at every position. Even their lesser Ghoul is a nice player, though an upgrade is possible. It kinda hurts to draft a Zombie at #7, but the only holes on the team are in Guard and Dirty Player on Zombies.
Jackass Mock: Bradley George, Ghoul.

8 Klazam, | Carolina Reapers | (Undead). The Reapers did okay in their first season in Carolina, and their Mummy squad is just to die for (pun totally intended). They could replace aging Wight Rockefeller J. Slaughter, or they could pick up a stud Ghoul. But in this mock, there aren't any great Ghouls left.
Jackass Mock: Six Feet Under, Zombie.

9 Doofr, New York Deviants (Dark Elf). Doofr was seen as a rising star coming out of Season XX, but collapsed down the stretch. The Deviants could really use a quality cog Blitzer, and this is a good season to find one!
Jackass Mock: Mash Skull, Blitzer. David Silkerson could be an option too; he'd lose 20 SPP (duplicate Block), but would be a nice way to annoy Arcayn.

10 Arcayn, PhilaWAAAGHphia Iggles (Orc). PhilaWAAAGHphia has had a rough first couple seasons, but is building up into a respectable force. They need both a Blocker and a Blitzer.
Jackass Mock: David Silkerson, BoB. If Silkerson is off the board, John Shakleton is almost as good.

11 Kzarik, Ministers of Sewer Skulking (Skaven). Kzarik had a rough season in an elite NFC North, and is contemplating a rebuild. He hasn't specified a race yet. If he stays with the rats, he could use a Gutter Runner or a Blitzer.

12 jmonforton, Atlanta Falchions (Lizardman). The Falchions have an okay roster, but are sitting on a rookie Saurus, which will probably get upgraded this season.

13 DrPoods, Miasma Dolphlegms (Nurgle). The Dolphlegms have a good solid core, but are sorely lacking in the Pestigor department. In particular, they lack a hitter.

14 Valen, Dead England Patriots (Undead). Valen is in negotiations to move to another franchise, and if he does he may start another team. He has made noises about the various AV8 elf squads (High and Dark) and about Dwarfs. Either way, this is the season to pick up a good Blitzer type.

15 rodney_dangerfield, Vigilante Shingles (Chaos Dwarf). Vigilante has taken it in the shorts this season. They didn't get knocked out of a close playoff contest until after Week 12, and need Dwarfs badly.

16 MenonaLoco, C'attle C'haos (Chaos). C'attle had a really rough early season until they lost their Minotaur and cut their primary carrier, and then they took off with six games unbeaten. This season, they should have an easy time maintaining their squad, either replacing the damaged warrior Slavelord Perry or grabbing a quality cog Beastman. Nothing sexy.

17 Amon242, Blitzburgh Yellowjackets (Wood Elf). Amon242 has decided to seek greener pastures, either with a new franchise or a new team (he's considering Daemons of Khorne). If he keeps Blitzburgh, he could really use a good lineman, and will have plenty of options.

18 Bazakastine, Warpston Oilers (Skaven). After 5 seasons, four playoff appearances, and two AFC Championships (he lost the league title to happygrue both times), Baz has decided to go to Lizardmen. This is a decent year for Saurus players, so he picked a good time.

19 Nicodemus1, San Foulcisco '69ers (Necromantic). San Foulcisco came in like a lion with a 6-1-0 performance in the first half, but collapsed down the stretch to miss the playoffs on tiebreakers. In the process, the squad's Golems got wrecked. There may be a run on cog Strength players, but something playable will emerge, I'm sure.

20 Antithesisoftime, Dulles Howlboys (Necromantic). The Howlston Texans are back, after qualifying for the playoffs but dropping out in Season XIX. This squad looks great, but needs to replace Matt Spaeth at Golem. It's unlikely there will be a lot of good stuff here, so they may go for a Wight or a Guard Zombie instead.

Oh, and for playoff teams, if they rebuild, here is the draft order they would take, in ascending draft order.

BillBrasky, New Orleans: 13th (between jmonforton and DrPoods)
Garcangel, Washington: 14th (between DrPoods and Valen)
Robocoyote, New York Jets: 19th (between Bazakastine and Nicodemus1)
Thoralf, Baltimore: 19th
Ex-Convict, Oakland: 19th
Jeffro, Cleveland: 19th
Asteflix, Detroit: 19th
Relezite, Chicago: 19th
JackassRampant, Denver: 20th (between Nicodemus1 and Antithesisoftime)
mrt1212, Jacksonville: 20th
Stimme, Los Angeles: 21st (after Antithesisoftime)
happygrue, Green Bay: 21st.

There's been a shakeup!

We will no longer have a 2nd round or compensation picks in the main draft. We will be expanding and reworking the expansion draft (watch this space). Also, redrafting playoff teams will no longer be slotted in non-playoff order (we don't need this anymore). Therefore, the top 20 draft order above will only change if any coaches leave, in which the replacement coach(es) will be slotted in starting at #4 overall.

What's more, we have seen the first round of the Wildcard go down, and here's how picks 21-24 shake out:

#21 BillBrasky, Nawlins Lost Saints (Chaos Renegades). Nawlins limped into the playoffs with an unexciting and uninspiring squad, only to be quickly and decisively undone by Relezite's Vampires. The bigs are seriously unreliable, but it's unlikely that any good big guys will make it into the 20s. Possibly a replacement Skaven is in order, but perhaps there will be a sexy Marauder or Goblin, you know?

#22 Garcangel, Weaklington Frailskins (Elven Union). This is not a wonderful draft for Catchers, but there are good fits who might slide (I'm looking at you, Samson Anguay). Otherwise, another decent cog Lineman is all that can be asked out of this draft.

#23 Thoralf, Baltimore Mavens (Dark Elf). Another team with plenty of holes, a quality Witch Elf would be nice, but a decent Blitzer or Lineman is a more likely outcome in this field.

#24 Ex-Convict, Oakland Elf Raiders (Dark Elf). If the Raiders keep going (a big if at this point), they will be in position to claim the best player available: possibly a Blitzer? They have three decent ones, and a fourth would be a good thing to have.

#25 Robocoyote, New York Wrecks (Chaos). The Wrecks have some damaged core players, but won't be able to replace any of them without taking a major downgrade, so expect them to pick a solid cog type.

Here is the ARC Mock for picks #11-20:

11 Kzarik, Ministers of Sewer Skulking (Skaven). Word on the street is that Kzarik will stick with the rats. I don't see how a Skaven team that needs a GR can pass up +MA. So this is the choice that makes most sense to me.
ARC Mock: Gutter Runner Jared "Freighttrain" Hassin [ARMY] (+MA/MB/Daunt)

12 jmonforton, Atlanta Falchions (Lizardman). The Falchions have a Rookie Saurus on the roster as JR mentions and needs to fill that spot, Especially since they have a +AG skink on the roster already. BPA for Atlanta...
ARC Mock: Saurus John Shakelton [NV](B/MB/G)

13 DrPoods, Miasma Dolphlegms (Nurgle). The Dolphlegms need Pestigors. So let's give them one here.
ARC Mock: Pestigor Chrisss Adcock [CAL](B/T/MB)

14 Valen, San Fran TBD (Orc). Valen moves from UD in NE to Orcs in his Beloved San Francisco. He has 2 approaches here IMO... Blitzer or BOB. I believe that Blitzers are easier to skill than BOBs. So draft the BOBs now Valen.
ARC Mock: Black Orc Kev'n DaDrake [PAIN] (B/G/MB)

15 rodney_dangerfield, Vigilante Shingles (Chaos Dwarf). JR says these Chorfs need blockers badly, And I agree. So we will make this pick here.
ARC Mock: Chaos Dwarf Blocker Chris "Steeltoe" Boldt [ARMY](+ST/Daunt)

16 MenonaLoco, C'attle C'haos (Chaos). Very light in the Beastman category. The Menonite looking coach might not want more +AG since he fired one of those last season, but this is the BPA here IMO:
ARC Mock: Beastman Steppon Green [PAIN](B/T/+AG)

17 Amon242, Arizona TDB (Nurgle). Amon242 has decided to seek greener pastures. Moving from Wood Elves with amazing WD to Nurgle. So let's start him off with a BIG with Block.
ARC Mock: Rotspawn Cadet David Shawn [NIB](B/G/BT)

18 Bazakastine, Houston TBD (Lizards). The Lizard God, finally answers his true calling. Bazakastine changes pets. Flushing his oft-injured gerbils for some spanking new iguanas. The Base of a Good Lizard team is it's Sauri.
ARC Mock: Saurus Alex Croxwaite [CAL](Frenzy/B/BT)

19 Nicodemus1, Pittsburgh TBD (Necromantic). Moving his Necro from the SF to PIT, Nico hopes to match last seasons start and continue it into the second half of the coming season. Replacing the 1 skilled Golem would be the right step here.
ARC Mock: Golem Sam Pier [TX](B/MB/Frenzy)

20 Antithesisoftime, Dulles Howlboys (Necromantic). The Howlboys look pretty complete. They could replace Spaeth, but the Strength pickings are slim at this point. So I will give them an upgrade at another position.
ARC Mock: Wight Barrett "Barnacle Goose" Corrigan [O](T/D/SS)

No Ark, JR did 1-10 and asked if I'd be interested in doing 11-20. So it is a continuation of JR's Top 10 Mock posted above

Long post on expansion draft board and rules on the way, pending image approval.

Right now, here's what the expansion teams look like, in descending main draft order.

#(30-32) happygrue is getting bored with the legendary Green Ball Attackers, and is considering building a Simyin squad to see if it can be done at this level. This may or may not happen....

#24 Ex-Convict made the playoffs with a depleted Oakland Elf Raiders squad, but is contemplating either rebuilding them or starting over with a new team, either in Oakland, Tennessee, or somewhere else. Race unknown.

#18 The mighty Bazakastine has released the Warpston Oilers to the draft (they're still in the remnants; see next post) and is now running the Houston T-Rexans (Lizardmen).

#17 After just missing the playoffs in their first season, Amon242 has shelved the Blitzburgh Yellowjackets and is running a Nurgle team in Arizona (name unknown).

#14 As a '49ers fan, Valen has been biding his time playing teams he hates in New England, where he never was happy. Now he's rebuilding with Orcs in San Francisco, but hasn't named them yet.

#1 When captainmalkor joined midseason, his Khemri looked unimpressive, and they delivered on that promise. Now he's doing Wood Elves for realz in New England as the New Elfland Patreants.

Without further ado, allow me to introduce you to the new, improved...

NBFL Expansion Draft!

How this works:

* Any NBFL team inactive for more than two seasons is automatically released to the Expansion Draft Board (injured players (except MNG), legends, and players with fewer than 16 SPP retire instead). Any coach may release any inactive team to the Expansion board. Any uninjured (or just MNG) player with 16-176 SPP released from any team for any reason also becomes eligible for the Expansion Draft Board.

* Each season, the draft commissioner selects a number of teams with released players and distributes them among the three Expansion Draft Pools: unselected teams are placed into the Expansion Draft Remnants. Teams may be removed from the Remnants by their coaches, if restarted in the NBFL, but once the team goes into the Pools, it is forever prohibited from returning with its roster intact.

* The three Expansion Draft Pools are divided along subjective talent lines, given the draft positions eligible to the player type. Each pool should include at least ten more players than will be drafted.

* New teams (new coaches or coaches changing races) receive one pick in each pool. If an established coach wants to rebuild an existing team, all players on that team may be fired and the team can be drafted anew; alternately, one franchise player may be retained from the team, in lieu of the team's Pool I draft pick.

* Established teams that do not have an overall quality level at least equivalent to that of a new team (after adding 6SPP free agents but before considering the established team's pick in the main draft) may be given a single compensation pick in any (or all) Expansion Draft Pools. These picks are always made at the end of the draft order for that Pool, and if more than one compensation pick is awarded in a pool, these picks will always be ordered in main draft order.

* Draft order in Pool I is random, but if there are at least two non-playoff coaches drafting at or below the new coach line in the main draft, only these coaches are eligible for the first overall pick. Draft order in Pools II and III will be the reverse of Pool I. Rebuilding teams that retain a franchise player will draft as close to the middle of Pools II and III as possible, rounding in the coach's favor in Pool II and against the coach in Pool III. As above, compensation picks are made at the end.

* If there is more than one new coach in the league for the new season, the draw for draft order does not differentiate one from another: as many placeholders as new coaches are used for expansion draft order, and then the order for new coaches is determined randomly for both draft boards at once, with main draft order among new coaches being the reverse of Expansion Pool I order.

* Pool I will be drafted first, then Pool II, then Pool III. Coaches may draft players from later pools with earlier picks. Each draft has the same rules about timing, player positions, and naming as the main draft. Players with multiple school/franchise tags in their names should retain all of them, as well as their previous franchise, in their player names.

* Latecomer teams that miss the draft will get no main draft picks. Instead, these teams will be awarded two Pool I picks, one Pool II pick, and one Pool III pick. At the commissioner's discretion, the Pool II or Pool III pick may be moved up a pool, if the pool in question feels picked-over.

* Trade rules forthcoming: trades will be allowed in the Expansion Draft (only) this season.

I updated and expanded the Expansion Draft to include leftovers from previous seasons. I also came up with some rules for how to develop them.

The draft begins this weekend, so it's time for a final news recap:

1) All 32 coaches from Season XXI have returned! This is the first time we've had this happen, and we're all very excited... except the coaches on the waiting list. I'm sure they're happy for us, but not happy to have to wait.

2) Happygrue and his mighty Green Ball Attackers beat mrt1212 and the Jakesonville Jortles to take their sixth NBFL Super Bowl title. All hail the Frog Prince of the NBFL!

3) League commissioner mrt1212 saw fit to punish thoralf and the Baltimore Mavens for turtling in the playoffs by moving their draft pick from #23 to #32.

4) Asteflix, coach of the Detroit Destitutes, decided at the last minute that he wanted to rebuild with Vampires. But Vampires are already taken in the NFC North, so he had to swap franchises. So he came to me, and made me an offer I couldn't refuse: abandon my safe, stale perch atop the AFC West and charge headlong into the prestigious NFC North. However, there were already two Orc teams in the NFC, and in the interest of seeing this happen, coach Arcayn decided to shelve his PhilaWAAAGHphia Iggles and go with High Elves!
* Arcayn is now the Phull-o-s'elfia Egos
* asteflix is now the Deadver Brujahs
* JackassRampant is Destroyt Ork City

5) We've had the draw for the Expansion draft. Congratulations, Valen on winning the Herger lottery!

So, now, the main draft order is:
Image

And the expansion order is:

The draft kicks off on Sunday, 20 January at 15:00 server time! Both drafts will run concurrently.
