Two of my friends were playing via the proxy and i wanted to spectate. Spectating worked well, only the others did not get my chat messages. Reconnecting did not help.
Might be a problem with the proxy.

nope, that's the way it is. spectators can only talk to eachother, not to the playing coaches.

To avoid flooding the message screen and distractions, I'm sure.

Hmm, wouldn't it be good to make that optional? So each coach can decide to ignore the specs or not. Or let the server decide for both coaches.

I don't think that prevention of giving hints is a good argument. If a coach was to take hints from a friend, then he could easiliy communicate via irc or the like. And that way the opponent wouldn't even notice it.
