I was introduced to bloodbowl by an online friend (he no longer plays) in early 2004, and became instantly hooked. Took me a while learning on my own, having never played the tabletop version...didn't score until my third game, didn't win until my 9th. Don't even ask me what my record was in my first 100 games, I don't wanna know, it was that bad.
My early (first 500 or so) games were experimenting with different teams, trying to find one that worked for me. The general rule followed though was one of absolutely no fouling: the very word just irked me as one of "cheating". So I avoided it, thought of myself as morally higher-calibre than anybody who fouled me. I started to win more and more matches, though the rate of losing players (and teams) was astounding. At least 2/3 of my retired teams came from that first year of learning how to play.
I've been through various phases of playing: the all-elf phase, a brief stunty phase, and of course my team building phase. Not sure how many games I lost b/c I was trying so hard to get THAT player the touchdown that either I lost the ball completely (often for a counter-score) or simply ran out of clock with the ball inches from the goalline.
Eventually I found my niche in bloodbowl life...SKAVEN!! The speed, the agility, the randomness mutations allow, and of course the gutter runner, my all time favorite player. To this day, I'm widely considered one of the premier authorities on skaven play and team building in all of fumbbl.
Eventually I came to realize the difference between "fouling" and "cheating". Cheating is taking advantage of loopholes in the programming of the online game that would never fly in tabletop (which I've never yet played a game of, despite some 1700 online games). Fouling is within game rules, and to greater or lesser degree actually encouraged. So, here's my foul policy:
I foul if it will help win the game and/or preserve my players. (Never gotten totally away from team building...) Expect fouls directed at your clawed monsters, your dirty players, str6 black orcs, the only tackle/mb player on your roster, one-turn scorers, even a rookie if I can stop your attempt at stealing the ball or scoring.
I won't foul simply because I can. I'm not a coach who looks to destroy your team; I play to win. If I have to kill a player or two to win, I will. If the game's over and there's no need to foul or crowdpush, I won't. I play to win. Live with it.
I love to chat in game, and will dish out compliments to thoughtful plays. I apologize in advance if I turn unresponsive at times--often I'm watching the kids at the same time as gaming, so will have to respond to the latest crisis of my 6 yr old, 2 yr old, 1 yr old or wife. But I'll do my best to play quickly otherwise.
