Lame Timing out.
This is just a simple plea for people to stop being idiots. The time-out function is for one reason only: if your opponent is playing and takes longer than 4 minutes to complete their turn. It is NOT to punish people who get disconnected or have to step away from the computer for an emergency.

As I write this, a coach who has played over 1200 games just timed out a new coach who has played less than 20 games...and this was after the new coach said "brb" at the beginning of his turn - his opponent - the experienced coach of over 1000 games times him out. It worked of course as the experienced coach steals the ball thanks to the extra turn and scores.

Of course, the new coach, not knowing better, just plays the game - dispirited that he lost a turn due to something out of his control. Seriously guys - this is a game for fun. Let's try to have some decency - especially when playing new coaches like this.

lol that's sick. I love the time out function. but tbh this coach needs naming and shaming
that in my book is plain cheating
Posted by ersatzniere on 2013-09-17 23:11:00
Sad ...
Posted by Azure on 2013-09-17 23:11:48
I admit, I would love to name and shame in this case - I can not believe how low some people will stoop to :/
Posted by BooAhl on 2013-09-17 23:14:20
Sounds like TF Metagaming!!!!

No, seriously name and shame. That is such bad behavouir.
Posted by jamiep151 on 2013-09-17 23:15:41
Should be punishments for this unfair, uncompetitive and poor sportsmanship.
Posted by harvestmouse on 2013-09-17 23:16:56
There is no issue here. It's against site rules. Coaches that are reported for doing it a first time are informed. Coaches that do it a second time are informed about the banhammer.
Posted by Garion on 2013-09-17 23:21:49
sounds like a tool.
Posted by Cavetroll on 2013-09-17 23:22:26
Azure, please make sure you report it since the new coach may not be aware that his opponent violated site rules. Just don't do it here so you get in trouble too ;)
Posted by Azure on 2013-09-17 23:30:48
I did submit a support ticket.

As for it being "No issue" as HM posted. I respectfully disagree. When someone says in chat "brb" and then as soon as 4 minutes pass his opponent instantly clicks time out and takes advantage of the situation...that IS an issue imo. Not sure why someone needs to first be "informed" about it. :/
Posted by JackassRampant on 2013-09-17 23:37:24
I think "no issue" means it's not controversial. This is an incorrect use of the time-out button. The aggrieved coach should be notified that action was taken too, so he doesn't think all FUMBBL coaches are jerks or that this is a good example to emulate.
Posted by Eusebio on 2013-09-17 23:52:13
just check the latest matches... its not rocket-science to figure it out ;)
Posted by vaclav on 2013-09-18 00:09:08
give us some hint who that could be. Like: that "spaggeti eater", or something..
Posted by Cavetroll on 2013-09-18 00:16:40
I disagree, Eusebio. The more time that goes by the harder it will be. I think I found the game in question. I wasn't familiar with either coach, but the 'games played' by each is spot on.
Posted by B_SIDE on 2013-09-18 00:19:42
Azure was pretty careful not to name and shame here. Let's not get him in trouble by bragging about how cleverly we deduced the details.
Posted by Elliott_the_Lame on 2013-09-18 00:22:37
Castleman,

Being of African-American descent, I highly object to your use of the term “lynching.”
Posted by Abraxas365 on 2013-09-18 00:59:30
I played vs a player yesterday, only 2nd game on FUMBBL. He was taking 5mins+ pretty much each turn unless a dice failed.

As if I'd time him out, I'd feel like an (insert expletive.)

It is beyond lame.
Posted by Arktoris on 2013-09-18 02:14:00
even I wouldn't time them out. and I'm a major proponent of the 4 minute rule.
Posted by JackassRampant on 2013-09-18 02:37:45
At some point, if it totally gets disgusting and my opponent should know better, I'll say something like "play fast" after the timer goes off: that's what I do when I hear the whistle, I speed up. But a rookie? Never. After a "brb"? Never. That's just wrong on both counts.
Posted by Lorebass on 2013-09-18 03:07:04
yup, if its consistent slowness with no explanation I personally support a "I'm going to time you out next time if you take wayyy too long again" warning then click the button next time it happens. The 4 minute rule is for tabletop where coaches have to turn their players, check who has what skills etc. that COULD take a while. thinking about your turn for 3 minutes 50 seconds before clicking a mouse button on a client that nicely lists everything on the board (even does the move count!) is complete BS. I only know of a few coaches that actually take a while and its because of some kind of disability or owning children(which trust me can feel like one sometimes playing this game) but they all generally give warning. I can wait around for that.

Rant ended, conclusion... none.

I am stunned by some of the comments to this blog.

Stunned.

I won't name and shame though.
Posted by garyt1 on 2013-09-18 03:45:31
I was timed out a few times in the first dozen or so games I played on the site. For some opponents playing a rookie in the box wasn't easy enough without doing so. This is definitely something that is offputting to new people. I was actually just taking too long on turns but new people should be allowed some leeway!
Posted by Arktoris on 2013-09-18 03:50:19
of course the lesson here is:

The timeout button should be for stopping the 4 minute turnover, not inducing one. After saying "brb" if he didn't notice his opponent pushing the "timeout override" button, he could have said something about it.

but as it stands, he gets ambushed, all the while hundreds of others who play by the rules, continue to be verbally abused by spoiled kids after officiating the turnover.

"Seriously guys - this is a game for fun. Let's try to have some decency..."

Wise words, those.

Kinda like swearing at people in a game... I would never do that (unless it was at lizvis). Games should be fun and behavior should be decent. Amen.
Posted by keggiemckill on 2013-09-18 04:56:50
If someone says brb, thats below the belt. Its a scumball move and they should be tarred, feathered, and then stoned in a public square. Though now a days, the term stoned in a public square can mean something completely different.
Posted by DaCoach on 2013-09-18 08:47:14
Jebus, have some class.
I only time out Legendary coaches taking more than 4 mins, and only after a warning. Giving them the warning about the clock makes me feel all fuzzy and warm inside (and helps me deal with my CR complex..)
Posted by Chainsaw on 2013-09-18 10:32:33
No waiting for brb or no warning for slow play...

...no class.

The British government will be voting on the use of surgical military strikes in light of this blatant warcrime. In other news.....

Chainsaw, it's very clever of you to comment on this, to hide the fact that it was YOU!

Wasn't him strangely!
Posted by LucaAnt on 2013-09-19 10:50:01
Happened to me too... The best thing in this situation is just quit the game and then resume when you are ready!

+1 vaclav!

a pity is spaghetti -_-

Stay Classy. One bad time out and put you off playing that guy ever again and or playing in any league that he is involved in. Glad you caught this one.
