Losing the Slann Virginity
Tried to play the remarkable slanns last night and it felt quite good. The opponent had a nonskilled chaosteam (with an beastman with MA7 as only exception) with 7 beastmen and 4 chaoswarrior and while I had 4 catchers, 6 linemen and a krox.

The first rounds as the kicking team I ended up being bashed as my krox decided to use the bonehead skill Before I could find a way to use the leapskill in my favor, and when the match was over I must say it Went down quite good. There was no major lucky breaks for either me or my opponenent and the reason I had a good time was because the leap and the difficulty for my opponent to deal with it.

Cant blame him since I would have done the same thing if I was in his situation and when the match was over I had won quite "easy". 3-1!

Questions:

1: What teams will be more difficult to play aganist? I dont have to fear tackle or claws since I have fragile frogs without Dodge anyhow. I am more in "fear" of being outplayed against faster teams right now but what do I need to keep in mind when I play different teams?

2: Blitzers? Why should I use them in the first Place? Expensive and I cant see the use for them that would make up the big TV improvement with a blitzer or two.

3: Skillups? I imagine kick would be great on a lineman and maybe a cathcer with strip ball but how about the skills on the linos on the LOS? Block or wrestle? Since I have a krox in the mix I may go with block to keep them standing but with wrestle they will get right up there and I will prolly dont leave the Krox alone so does it really matter?

Conclusion: They are both "funny" and "good" but I will continioue to try them out a few more matches Before I make a final decision to use them reguarly. The only thing that I am afraid of is that they will be killed Before they makes any skills so that I will end up as a low skilled team but on the other hand? As the goblincoach I am I am more used to using inducements in my favor so that may be the best things for the slanns also?

Blitzers are worthwhile once developed for their GSA access. They really never need Doubles Rolls, and any stat up only makes them better.

Also, never underestimate Jump-up or Diving Tackle against faster and agility teams.

In general, early on you're going to struggle against most teams, but more so those with a lot of Block built in. Later on they're just a normal mid-tier team, struggling notably against Dark Elves, for whatever reason. Which is to say, they get better as you skill them.

Blitzers are for Diving Tackle, they park on the opponent's ball carrier, and next to any scattered ball, and you add various skills to make that work better, including Stand Firm or Side Step to be more annoying, and various tools to scatter the ball in the first place. Jump Up and Leap lets them follow the ball very efficiently.

When your opponents don't have Block you want Block, and when they have Block you want some Wrestle too. A mix, with more Block early, is generally good. Block is always better with Strength access, and for anyone likely to be carrying the ball, like Catchers. Catchers with Guard are very nice.

Plus, the usual, Blodge wins games, Fend spam on the line helps against Guard and Piling On, and if you can luck into an AG 6 Catcher you will win a lot of games.

I like jump up, but they are very expensive. 110K? I mean, whats their main objectory? They will not do the scoring, cause I got catchers for that. Killing opponents? Nope. And keeping some fast guys in position with only 1 or 2 diving tacles seams not to be Worth it.

Maybe the skill selection makes them being better without tying up so much Money so I will buy atleast 1 to see where he is going.

Thanks for advices, keep them comming :)

Second game I lost fair and Square against some orcs, 1-2, and it was an okay experience as a slanncoach. Leap is excellent and the only thing Im concerned about is the Krox.

He is an expensive roadblock, and most of the times he is a real bonehead, but I guess he must be in the mix in order not to getting slammed all over the pitch?

After som thinking about the (in)famous blitzer I guess I will get atleast one of them.

Two matches into the mix and I have spp´s spread almost all over the team and I expect a skillup after next match if Everything goes normaly and the skill ofcourse depends on the position.

Krox would be great with block, but will he skill up? Nah....

Lineman would get kick asap.

And catcher? Hmm, split between strip ball and side step but Im leaning towards the last one, we will see.

Catcher loves dodge ;-) The blitzers can be amazing, check out nestoroide s slann teams for how he uses them.

And specifically delves, tussock? I find that they do amazing vs agile teams, and a little worse vs bash.

Although the good and fun thing of slann is how versatile they are.

Yeah, I start to realise that they are quite good(compared the goblins that Im used to playing) and still is funny enough to having a laugh while playing seriously.

They seams hard to pin down and since all have leap, everyone is a possible hero. Love them so far :)

I love the phrase 'use the bonehead skill'
As an ogre coach I know exactly what you mean. I might try to set a record for most boneheads in one game; there's gotta be a badge for that!
Good luck witht teh froggies, they are hard to play but can be super fun
Slann Blitzers are better than Wardancers after 3+ skills imho
Posted by Bloodfeast on 2015-09-21 14:41:47
Bonehead is a great skill for non violent people :)

The blitzers seams like an open road when they skillup and depending how I play the slanns I will see what I need further ahead.

Right now I have no sure plan for them and depending on opponent and their skills how I will use them right now.

I love the blitzers. yes, they are very expensive as rookies, but get them to three skills and suddenly you can have:

A MB / Piling on guy that opposing players can not dodge away from due to the diving tackle and can hit again next turn due to jump up

An elf style Block/Dodge/Sidestep/Diving tackle guy to mark players you want to stay in their spot, also with JU as a big bonus because if they do take someone down with diving tackle they still get to move 7 squares for their next job.

Honestly, Chaos is the easiest opponent imaginable. It won't get any easier than that.
Posted by Bloodfeast on 2015-09-21 17:50:15
True about noob chaos since they have no killers and no ballhandling but they can still outbach a noob slannteam with eaze.....
Posted by Wreckage on 2015-09-21 19:51:19
No doubt, just he was asking for easy races to play. And to be honest: A rookie chaos team is a better pick than Halflings or Goblins.
Posted by Bloodfeast on 2015-09-21 19:59:46
Ah, okay! But I was more intrerrested in things I need to avoid. Like, tentacles to keep me from leaping out of harms way, since I dont have Dodge I dont have to consider people like dwarfs and killer bashers with blodge and tackle and claw is just a waste for my opponent.

My hopes is that most people forget the slann playstyle since everyone has cures for both blockteams and dodgeteams :)

Edit: And no, I dont run from anyone, just need what I need to keep track on in the opponents teams. In order to know what to do, I need to know what I cant do :)

If you play any race then stay away from clawpombers.
With Slann I'd steer clear of Vampires, that's all.
