FFB Lifesign
It's been too long since my last blog about FFB development, so high time for an update.

The good news up front: I'm still around and I am still working on Fantasy Football.

I've been moving house (about 500 km), however, due to changing my place of work (working for the same company) and whoever has any experience moving with a family of four (188 boxes of stuff) knows that keeps you busy for a bit.

I've refactored serializing objects from a bytecode (of my own design) to JSON, a rather tedious process that took many months to complete (fixing over a thousand compile time errors). This is of course only a first step along the way to move the client from Java to JavaScript. Persistence (the way games are stored) has changed completely, as well. The new (compressed) format uses a lot less space and will enable Christer to move backups over to cloud storage in the future. Next point on the agenda is moving the network protocol over to Websockets. Which will then be enough changes for releasing a version 1.1 (in Q1 2014).

Those of you using a newer Java version (Java 7) on their machines will have noticed an annoying "untrusted" popup whenever you start FFB. This is due to a change in policy by Oracle that may cause unsigned JNLPs (Java Web Start Applications) to be discontinued altogether in the future. We have addressed this by serving a signed JAR in the near future - Christer has bought an appropriate certificate already (which is an unnecessarily complicated and rather expensive process). Nothing will change for you as a user - you just need to accept the certificate once and won't see any more popups from then on.

That's it from me - keep on gaming!

I don't understand any of the above apart from:

You are awesome.
Christer is awesome.
People put in a lot of hard and incredibly skilled work so that I can play and enjoy FUMBBL. Thank you. Time for a donation methinks!

I unfortunatly did understand everything he said, and know the time/dedication to forgoe such an undertaking especially on a volunteer basis.

So "Thank YOU!" to Kalimar, Christer, and each and every admin and player who has taken the time to administer, mod, change, add anything to this website. It is the one and primary reason that the game that I love so is still playable to me.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Kalimar's work is always appreciated, especially as the last couple of years has not been easy for him.

One fact that seems to have gone under the radar, is this expensive certificate that Christer has bought. You have to respect the guy for not making a big song and dance about it.

Thanks for all the hard work!

here is the thing that impresses:
kalimar works on this site... more than anyone... (except for that one guy who shall not be blamed) and still donated money to the site.

should make you think.

to think he could simply post that it needs buying. so people donate to buy it or fumbbl will close.
there is a lot that goes on that people do not know about.

Cheers guys

Yay! Proof Kalimar still cares. Christmas has come early. Thank you. And another thanks to Christer for all the things you do that I don't really understand.

Err, I gathered that you're alive and well, working on FFB stuff I don't understand, and your family has resettled in a new area.

Cheers!

Aha, interesting. Will you be doing more optimisation work on the client after this is done, or will you be allowing for more customization and features next?
Posted by zakatan on 2013-12-18 22:21:01
hmmm a new version of the client with a whole new set of bugs! yummm
