FFB Client Development Update II
Turn Timer and Timeouts: I have never particular liked the way the old client handles the turn time and timeouts. There is an extra time buffer to be used in case of emergencies (phone calls, burning cat and the like) which can also be used (and often is) to just add some extra time on a turn by turn basis. The new client handles this differently: once the time is up (4 minutes) a whistle sounds and the opponent gets a button on his screen to enforce a timeout ("call an illegal procedure" in rulesspeak). If he does so the currently selected player may finish his action and then the turn ends immediately. In case of emergencies, phone calls and the like TELL your opponent and him (or her) being a nice guy he will refrain from cutting you short. And if he doesn't - play someone else next time :-)

Time is up (after 1 minute just for testing):

Here is what your opponent sees on his screen:

Oh no, the opponent has hit the button:

The second screenshot also demonstrates another goodie:
players in the box show detailed information on when and how they got to be there :-)

Love that time button!... keep up the good work.

i think actively asking the ref to get a timeout (click timeout to start additional time running) is better than hoping your opponent doesn't have a bad day.

Excellent!
One question: If my opponent has Side Step, does the time stop when he chooses?
Otherwise he can just wait and then force a Time Is Up...

Marvellous
Posted by Kalimar on 2010-02-27 00:02:18
@dontomaso: of course it does. time stops on all dialogs / actions the opponent answers / makes on your turn. At least they are supposed to (I'm still testing) ...

Good stuff!

I thought it would.. :) Just had to ask...

Excellent work, man!

Nice work, i really like the time button. It will bring the pressure back into fumbbl's brand of blood bowl!

So dare i ask, when will we be receiving this wonderful new client for testing?

I don't like the idea of relying on your opponent's good will when RL issues need your attention. And if you can't rely on your opponent's good will, you'll just take that RL time when you should choose a side step square, a touchback, apo use or something other like that.

I like what flyor was suggesting that you could ask the ref for a timeout, but maybe the amount of timeouts would be limited somehow like once each half or 3 times per game etc.?

Timeout could just stop the clock on your 4min turn and wouldn't allow you to make any actions with them until you end your timeout. This way you wouldn't get any extra time making your moves, but you would have the option of putting the game on hold until you get your RL event fixed.

Yeah, I also like the idea of a 'timeout' button for RL issues. Maybe it could also black out the pitch for the player that uses it, so they can't abuse it to spend more time analysing their moves?

Great addition. Keep up the good work!

Fantastic work, I can't wait for this.

People are making some good suggestions, but please don't try to please everyone: looks like you are making the best client ever regardless.
Posted by JellyBelly on 2010-02-27 13:43:20
@ Zodd:

But if he doesn't please everyone, then he'll be pleasing you. So, now what's he supposed to do?!! It's like Catch 22 ...

:P

Great work! Can't wait to test your client. :)

Really nice, but I would also advocate some sort of emergency-button for the playing team. Once each half or once every game would be good, and the idea of the black out is not bad at all. That way you can avoid bitter/immature coaches messing up the game (or indeed any well meaning coach with an automatic "end turn"-finger) when the kids drop the cat in the aquarium, but you cannot abuse it to add game time.

I am anticipating the heck out of this new version! It sounds great.

I'd like to join the chorus on the opt-in timeout. A twice-per-game button to blank your screen up to 5 minutes to take care of IRL issues. I generally have a fair store of goodwill, but being a typical human, am skeptical of others ;)

Any ETA on a release?
