If you are a regular blog reader, ARR
player or just plain hate me, you may well know that I have accepted the ARR
Christmas fundraiser challenge.
IF that all sounds like madness check Here
for ArrestedDevlopments Blog.
Basically I was asked to complete a Halfling sprint. Essentially 16 games with the same team within 2 months. In B.
As the money for this foolhardy venture piled in (still more can be pledged Here
) and quickly became far more than I expected, I also agreed to attempt it with Goblins at the same time.
I have never coached either race before. This will be a voyage of discovery. i am not going to blog every game, but do hope to keep this more or less up to date.
Halflings: Chronicles Of PC, UnbelievARR
3-0 We get a lucky first game vs some Rookie Nurlges, but a niggled and missing Tree. Oh dear. Block and DP flings do not make up for it, nice skill rolls though. Needing a new tree will this team survive?
0-3 Down a Tree the dice didnt love me, many many BH and fail on everyhting we tried. Some slow and uninspiring DE was easily enough.
0-2 Despite chances in the first half to tie the game up, they failed, and the second half was slaughter.
0-1 A Legend coach with a crappy team. First half we got incredibly close to a score, but it wasnt to be, second half he dominated, yet still chances went begging. We'll play worse and win with stunties, but not this game.
1-1 After dominating both halves this feels liek a loss, but a well executed and brave (2gfi without reroll) TTM saw him home and the 2-1 drive faltered at the line.
2-0 This time i don't mess it up as badly, a shaky first half tactically was saved by some ttm and ball stealing to run in a very lucky td, and second half a good move from opponent led to the ball down but put a lot of his team in contact and i swept them away to walk in the 2-0.
0-0 Godlike dice for the Ogres, with few boneheads and pows every block lead to a terrible position in both halves, luckily the Ogres were awful at ball handling and the game ended scoreless.
1-0 A nice Fling encounter saw me get the key luck stopping his drive and dominate the second half.
0-1 Decided to try a chef, without working out would give opponent a tackle str4 av9 star. Second half almost turned it around but lacking numbers and rolling badly, couldn't save this one.
1-0 A true scalp to remember. Even if I cheated. Hired the chef and stole 1/2 in first half and both in second. First half the Dorfs just ate fling pie every turn and we only just stopped the turnover. Second half saw a lucky kick in reach and though the ball went to a hobgob hand, the fling pack descended and took it 'running' it away while the Trees busied the CDB's. But truely, nothing, not the dice, not the coaching, matters when Flings beat Chaos Dwarves. Rah!
2-2 Incredible Draw that felt like a win. 1-0 with no turns gone after blitz and riot, we somehow (the heat) whittled the DE down and came back to run in equalisers both halves, after forcing the DE to score with some solid pressure. A missed 1 in 9 fail (after huge other dice and luck) stopped a ttm based 2-1 lead as well. A game with it all. Fun.
1-0 Managed to take advantage of an early vamp implosion to steal ball and score a turnover td, then super conservative and dull second half on ice.
1-3 A nice try at 1-1 for halftime failed, and then everything else did in the second half.
2-1 A funny old game. First half disaster, Tree fails and elf steal. Second half a dominant Defence lead by PD and a turnover td. Then pushed my luck and instead of stalling for draw went for win. Blitz, TTM and ball to hand! Elves get ball back, But without rerolls fail a dodge and we steal ball back for a 2-1.
2-2 Playing up 160TV vs a legendary coach with CD. Not ideal. Somehow we scored and then a last gasp TTM secured a valuable draw. That's what I shall choose to remember.
0-2 An Omnishambles, Chef 1 from 6, KO's 1 from 8, and similar dice throughout. What looked winnable on paper was effectively a rout. Ironicly 'Bob' the star fling died (-str) with perfect timing, but 'Ashbrittle Returns' the Tree gained Block. Just in time to never use it.
AV6 may as well not be there.
Stop apothing flings you moron.
Dwarves, as bad as they said.
Really, stop apothing flings, learn.
Scoring with flings is unlikely at best, and that's unnopposed.
There needs to be a button that disables apoths on flings.
Goblins: Covenant of PC, UnbelievARR
2-0 to me and a slaughter. i must have been a good boy this year.
2-0 and a self inflicted bull BH on a skull/pow skilled a gobbo. A joyfully absurd gobbo run down the sideline through 3 TZ's with tackle was a highlight. Did not please opponent.
2-1 tight game where i got some key luck. My first time facing MB, and wow it eats stunties alive, and that's without tackle.
0-1 They came with a blodge ball carrier, 2 MB vermin, an opening blitz and all the Dice. they left with many cas.
2-1 My first ever stunty TTM lit up a first half that had been bleak, and thus refreshed 'John, Whirling Death' came out for the second half, pressure on with apoth and 2 bribes used to keep him there, and delivered big time, tying up many players and off fielding too.
1-0 A decent first half saw me nearly score then some good play stopped me and an error removed my last slim hope. Second half beautiful dice and opponents fail gave me a lucky win.
2-0 My Gobbos turn with the Rotters my Flings took down game 1, and a joyfull slaughter. 2 we ceased the beast, each time it regened. But 2 died, and facing 6 second half it was fun to be relaxed coaching a stunty race for one half. tougher times no doubt ahead.
1-0 A repeat showing for the Nurgle now sporting block and a MB goat. Took the Loony and Fanatic out early and it looked bleak, stumbled a TD in somehow after a stall went badly wrong, then magic happened and somehow, god knows how, we stopped the offence on the line and the took the win after a 3+ went down for the draw.
1-0 The threepeat was even tighter, after throwing away a good stall first half we dominated the second but only just got the ball to the line with a no reroll gfi.
1-1 And now the sprint will be a victorious one. The opponent claimed he robbed me, and certainly i had a chance or two to win it, but a draw v elves feels like a good result. Slicey Skilled.
1-1 Foolish weapon use led to both being lost early in the first half, somehow we stumbled over for a 1-0 but with fouls raining in and gobbos leaving, godlike vampire dice in the second half made things tricky, 1-1 came easy and we tried a side sneak for the td but were run down and only a last gasp interception saved the draw. Some luck spent.
1-2 Robbed on the final turn by a blockless -2die v block and then a lucky throw in, luck turned bad after a first half of 6/8 troll fails and general awfulness, managed a TTM TD and looked set for the draw. But no.
0-3 Everyone gets what they want and I get beaten to shit by an expert coach with killy Dorfs. At least brief.
2-2 Facing 274 Loners and a Wardancer ag5 Strip Ball Wrestle with kicker and thrower support seemed likely to end badly. And did. until it suddenly didnt and a 1 threw the ball out which then refused to leave gobbo hands as we trundled in the draw.
2-1 After 5 long games without a win, finally a game that felt like a win and was a win. tough and lucky at every stage, but got there somehow.
1-1 An error strewn match with plenty of chaos and fun. A final desperate defence saved the draw in a game that could have gone either way with rolls each side to win it.
Second halves require differing tactics. Toyless is joyless.
Block may in fact be evil.
Bribes: One for fouling, two for toys, three means fun for all the boys.
Trolls are crap, but are what you have.
