What Would Make me Play Moar Fumbbl
Might attract hate, but please read on if you are going to judge...

I would probably play more if we got rid of B.

What I remember the most about Fumbbl of 5 years ago, is that chat was active. We really had a community then (we have one now, but it does not seem as active). Gamefinder was always full of teams and it was possible to get games with evil teams.

Then B came along...

The biggest impact of B for impacting that community is it split the userbase in two.

There is a well understood concept in business called The Network Effect. This is the idea that a good or service is more 'valuable' when more people use it. In essence, every time you double the userbase, you exponentially increase the combined value.

This is what I think has had the biggest impact on Fumbbl.

Two separate divisions reduce the possibilities to get a game. In the North American evening time, this is a big drawback (I would argue the success of the Whiskey League is in part because of how hard it is to get matches in either R or B).

A secondary impact of B (and the new gamefinder) is that you don't have to be on chat to get a game. I do feel that has dramatically impacted the sense of community.

Death to the BOX!!!
Posted by Meltyman on 2012-11-09 00:09:53
it's a black-thing ain't it ?
Posted by Qaz on 2012-11-09 00:33:46
Get rid of both box and ranked so we can liven up div lrb4 ;)
Posted by koadah on 2012-11-09 00:40:42
But Synn,

I don't wanna play Ranked. Why not get rid of that?

We have communities in [L]eague.

Don't forget that the 'great' community wasn't everyone's cup of tea.

New Ranked GF undermines the IRC anyway.
Posted by the_Sage on 2012-11-09 00:47:09
With you on both accounts. Make matchfinding social again.
Posted by harvestmouse on 2012-11-09 00:47:48
For me the biggest impact on the site was xbox live and whatever the PS3 one is called. Internet gaming became much more accessible and thinned down all communities.
Posted by Chainsaw on 2012-11-09 01:06:21
Look at what you did Synn. BillBrasky is sobbing now. He's bawling his eyes out because you threatened to take away his most prized toy.

How could you be so heartless!?

It's OK Bill, I'll pour you some whiskey.
Posted by pythrr on 2012-11-09 01:09:12
I entirely agree Synn. Oh the times when one strolled main chat getting hit on by sexy spanish and italian men, or were attracted to the brooding Emphasy siting in a dark corner....
Posted by MattDakka on 2012-11-09 01:25:20
I would rather the other way around, i.e getting rid of Ranked.
This way the userbase would be less split.
Ranked is infested by cherrypickers and team farmers.
I would force everyone who want competition to play in the Box, that should be the only competitive division, because choosing your opponent is not right when you are playing competitively (i.e. to raise your CR), in R you can avoid hard matches (everyone knows that Amazons R teams rarely play against Dwarfs, for example, and this increase the win rate of the coach who plays them).
For friendly matches arranged by coaches via Gamefinder L is fine, and S if you want to play something different for fun and giggles.

Posted by Qaz on 2012-11-09 01:32:18
Its easier to pick in the box than in R for sure
Posted by MattDakka on 2012-11-09 01:34:22
If you are talking about picking a clawpomb team, yes, in Box it's easier for sure.
Posted by Qaz on 2012-11-09 01:40:55
some get it some dont ;)
Posted by fidius on 2012-11-09 01:45:09
Many nights I don't play B or R, I just play Gamefinder. Would it be easier to get a game in GF if the first player to click the Green Check was made the Home team (no coin toss)? Other incentives?
Posted by Jeffro on 2012-11-09 02:21:03
So you want a more social nature added back into FUMBBL, but every time I've asked you to join a league you say (and I quote entirely):

"no."

Be the change you want to see, Synn... and I want to see more blogs rated 1, so I'll follow my own advice shortly here...

;P
Posted by Nelphine on 2012-11-09 03:51:46
eh to be fair, leagues require a far more specific time investment than R or B do.
Posted by Wang on 2012-11-09 04:37:14
I play at the end of a long day working after my son has gone to bed. Sorry, but the convenience of Box is very big for me. I like chatting in the games, to spectators, reading blogs, etc, but making it take longer for me to get a game - no thanks.
Posted by Mr_Foulscumm on 2012-11-09 05:05:29
I agree with Synn 100%.

The community is a shadow of it's former self and yeah, he pretty much nailed the cause of it.

Oh and Paulhicks should come back...
Posted by koadah on 2012-11-09 08:31:32
I don't agree that he nailed the cause.

As Synn said the new gamefinder means that you don't need chat to use Ranked either. So, many new guys don't feel that they need to install a chat client.

There are new people joining all the time. If you want more community you need to convince more of them to use chat and the forums.

Yes, number of games/coaches are down. That is more likely because Cyanide are doing twice as many games a day as we are.
(Though maybe not as many turns ;) )

As bad as the Cyanide AI is it does provide a quick BB fix. One that will not have a problem with interruptions, you stopping and starting the game whenever you like. it won't care how slow you are. It won't bitch, whine and moan over the dice, your tactics etc. And new coaches might even be able to win a game. ;)

If you cannot get games in the middle of (our) night then yes it would help if you looked for games in the same place. But both divisions seem to be doing fine during our evening.

Maybe the new gamefinder is too efficient. If you want to use nasty teams Box is the place to be. ;)
I have never even used the new gamefinder. I get more games than I can handle directly via PM.

If you live in the dead zone then you may need to resort to [L]eague. How are the SWL crowd getting along.

Cutting Box isn't going to be much help. Personally I'd rather play FOL than be stuck with just Ranked/#fumbbl.
If FOL is too quiet I could sharpen my claws in Nagg as a last resort.
Without [L]eague things would be worse.
Maybe people just know where to get a game quickly during the US evening.

Many of the old gang didn't like the new rules. People are gonna have new jobs, new families, new friends, new games etc.
You can't expect the old crowd to hang around for ever.

If you want community you have to build it from the people that are here and many of those want Box/MatchMaking.
Posted by koadah on 2012-11-09 08:47:19
[shameless plug]You guys are welcome to join the Open [L]eague Free For All if you want to have a go at creating some community.

Make your 'Open' games mean something. ;)

And there does seem to be a fair number of Americans.

I found scheduleing [R] matches in IRC and the old gamefinder tiresome. My impression wasn't at all that you could always find a game. My sample is relatively small, only played some 30 or so [R] games back in the old days, but one main reason for that was I hated IRC scheduling.

Plus, even back in the day it was mostly just you spamming the chat, Synn. ;-)
Posted by Verminardo on 2012-11-09 09:16:49
P.S.: Also, spectator's chat in majors is pretty active!
Posted by bghandras on 2012-11-09 09:25:41
From purely the networking point of view both Ranked and Bbox are just below critical mass to function properly. (In bbox i dont want to wait almost an hour, then got scheduled with a semi rookie team against a killer team with much higher TV, as it happened to me recently. In ranked i dont want to wait 2 hours, and still not receive any match offer as it happened also to me.)
So assuming if (and it is a HUGE if) Ranked or Bbox would be removed and all people would migrate to the other, then the site would provide better service.

The problem is that there is always loss of users. If you remove one of them, you cant expect that all people accept it and move to the other.

The above is true does not mattter whether bbox or ranked would be removed.

If you want new members to be active in the forums and chat then you need to all take a look at your selfs.

Almost every time a new joiner or joins chat or posts you have one of you guys give him a hard time, Truth hurts and deep down you know im right.

I have even spoken to new joiners in game and to other specs saying you should join the chat and most always say "No thanks been warned to stay away from there"

Even older members hardly go in there like Juck101 i talk to him at my local club and ask why and he says the same thing that most people chat in there are rude.

So take a look at your selfs.
Posted by hale on 2012-11-09 10:51:48
when you turn 16 foul people only to hurt a person's team that probably also affects your ability to get a game, just saying.

O.o
Posted by pythrr on 2012-11-09 15:47:03
people in chat are "rude"

what are you, 12?
Posted by Mr_Foulscumm on 2012-11-09 18:15:04
I don't actually remember seeing anyone be rude to new players. I know I was never treated rudely when I was new here. But if you say so I'll just take your word for it... I guess...
