There and Back Again, A Goblin's Journey.
We are in Altdorf, enjoying all the luxuries that the row of a hundred taverns can provide. It has been almost a year since our book ‘A Christmas Carol’ became a bestseller and the money flowing in has allowed us to retire from our job as a beat writer for K.O! Magazine and live like a king. The wind and rain batter against the window of the tavern as the landlord throws another log onto the roaring fire and prepares us another bottle of port. This is the life, warm, safe and coddled in an alcoholic haze, much better than being bitten by a giant squig or molested by a giant spider. It wasn’t all bad though, following that lunatic the Great Gobbo around. When he threw a party it stayed thrown, and every time he fell off the tightrope of genius onto the floor of incompetence the consequences were usually hilarious.
Leaning back and taking a sip of port we think back to that day just over a year ago when after the Fumbbl birthday party the Great Gobbo had just vanished. No-one had seen or heard from him since, and the little green fool was probably wearing a pair of cement shoes at the bottom of the sea somewhere, having crossed one dangerous individual too many.
We look out of the window from the light and warmth of the tavern to the cold and dark of the street. A small figure, probably a poor street urchin, clad head to foot in rags and a hood skulks down the road. It appears to be looking for a particular tavern, probably to pickpocket some unwary traveler. Oddly though it stops outside our tavern, and after appearing to check some parchment and satisfying itself, it produces a big stone from underneath its robes. It walks up to our window, pulls back it’s arm and throws the stone right at us! THUD. The stone hits the wooden wall of the tavern having missed the window. The sound of professional level cursing can be heard as the wretched creature retrieves its stone and readies itself for another attempt. Fascinated we watch as this time, at the peak of its wind up the stone slips from its hand and lands on its foot, obviously causing the little fellow great pain. We settle back to watch this amusing little charade as once again the pathetic thing hops over to its stone and picks it up (on the second attempt) for another throw. Success! The stone comes crashing through the window and the little vandal turns and runs for it. Just as it is about to reach the street corner and disappear from view it seems to trip on its own cowl and goes tumbling headfirst into the cobbled street. Dazed the little guy groggily gets to his feet, just as a horse and cart comes racing around the corner. POW! Even half a street away we wince at the collision. A crowd of onlookers rush to gather around the stricken creature, seemingly to offer aid, but this notion is dismissed when one of the bystanders kicks the poor thing whilst it is down. Fortunately a member of the Altdorf guard spots this heinous act and, looking resplendent in his black and white uniform, arrests the assailant (who by the way looks as though he hasn’t had a bath in years) and marches him off to the guardhouse. With the excitement apparently over the crowd disperses leaving the motionless body of the mysterious stone thrower lying in the gutter.
A feeling of Déjà vu creeps over us, a nagging feeling that this is all somehow very familiar. Getting up we walk over to where the stone lies on the floor and examine it and to our amazement there is a message scratched onto it which reads as follows:
“Oi Gitface, I wantz a wurd wiv ya. Kum rownd ter me kave ASAP. GG.”
Could this message possibly be from the Great Gobbo himself? Was he back? There is only one way to find out…
