Losses
Going through a long string of losses in R and B. L is ok. Getting complacent I think. Not the greatest coach ever but beginning to get frustrating. Making so many stupid mistakes in desperation to make sure I grab a win. This puts me in daft positions then I inevitably lose. I would blame Nuffle but I know it's me! :)

Just a record of how I am feeling so I can reflect in the future.

So apart from:

Speccing other coaches
Reading playbooks
Watching replays
Generally getting better

Any other pearls of wisdom for an exasperated coach? :D

changing play style as an experiment.

if you are usually very "safe", try mixing it up with some passing plays. if you tend to take risks, try playing conservative for a while. see if things change. :)

What I often do when I'm playing really badly is take a break from R (and B if you play there) altogether. I've been having to do that a lot recently out of necessity, rather than choice, but it's still helped me to go back to basics a little.

Play good teams. Some teams like are just a lot better then others. Like CD, nurgle, skaven, orcs.

play halflings
expect to lose
cheer when you win

oh, and I think it's great when coaches don't blame the dice.

Take some time with a fun stunty team - you'll still lose your share of games but your victories in spite of the odds will be extra tasty.

Just about our game today. I think you fouled too much. The risk to lose players of your 11 man team was to high compared to the chances to remove my players in the long term.
Posted by Frankenstein on 2014-04-17 23:53:03
You beat the Impalers. That's quite the accomplishment, those guys eat my dudes for breakfast (last time they sweeped us 4-0 or so).

Play undead for a bit. You can't lose at low tv.

General advice:
- Play stronger teams
- Play vs better coaches and rewatch the reply. Go through each turn and try to understand why he does A before B. For myself I did not understand the power of chainpushes until I got my asswhiped up and down the walls. I think I played Chaos Dwarf vs a Wood Elf team.
- Watch Majors - as the major progress most of the times it will be the top notch coaches that battle it out for the win.

Now after watched some matches, will give some advice:
- Learn to block and chainpush better.
- Always only place 3 players on the LOS! Always until you have a better CR
- Always place enough players on the LOS so you can do 2dice block on ALL his players on the LOS.
- When only 11 players on your team, then dont foul!
- Stall! Seriously, Stall! Are the ground burning hot or do you have a mean hellhound running after you? Or do carrying the ball meaning you need to be the first man in front of all your other players?
- Learn to cage better, but dont build a tight cage with all 11 players. 5 players for the cage, rest spread out and should make it harder to surround you.

I am a bit hard maybe, but seriously you are making some rookie mistakes that should not be made. Remember these and keep on playing, sooner or later you will get better!

I find that getting frustrated compounds "luck" because I start making choices for the hell of it.

Case in point; blitzed one of PainState's players with my DE pomber and followed up and piled on just for the hell of it - despite a terrible position for it. Next turn, fouled, -ST or dead. On a normal day that follow up / pile on does not get done. Of course, for that one example there's many others where the consequence wasn't as severe but it is the reckless choice leading to the negative result which was avoidable.

When I feel up against it in general, I get reckless.

Ironically often its when I'm actually up against it due to reckless play that I pull out my A game. If I could pull out my A game without having to be a fool first, I might actually be good at BB.

So, yeah, play calmly is what I'm getting at. The best coaches have a heart beat like a metronome, I bet.

To end a losing streak:
Ranked:
-Play weaker teams and weaker coaches
Box:
-Build better teams

Play slow and think things through
Posted by Igvy on 2014-04-18 03:35:13
Watch your own replays. Think about what you could have done to be better.

Consider the order of things that were moved - maybe move some players after that dodge, and some before the handoff.

Watching others is great, but in truth all we really need to do is take a long look at ourselves.
Posted by Verminardo on 2014-04-18 08:51:57
Here's what works for me:

- Take a complete break of a couple of days.
- Try to be self-aware and not get annoyed at yourself. Accept that you are not a list-topping, multiple-major-winning coach and that you will make mistakes.
- Try to improve only one aspect of your coaching at a time.
- Create a new team with a cool theme or some fluff and play it.
- And, yes, indulge yourself with a little meta-gaming. Play Dwarves or Undead or Norse or Zons at low TV in the Box. Play against inexperienced coaches in Ranked.

I feel like I should really get the BGA going again... Oh well, it's League - but it's a nice, quick distraction and laugh. ;-)
Posted by Grod on 2014-04-18 13:59:09
You seem to have a huge number of teams. Experimentation is fun, but maybe stick with just 3 or 4 for a while and see where it takes you?
Posted by DrDeath on 2014-04-18 14:22:11
Being frustrated at losing is healthy, especially if as Igvy says, you then take time to watch the replay and see why you lost. Always ask yourself 'Could I have done anything better?'. That way you will improve as a coach.

Having said that there will be games where you just roll loads of critical double skulls. Don't beat yourself up on those games. Those should be the easy ones to take - just shrug your shoulders, accept there was nothing that could be done and move on to the next game.

Play against inexperienced coaches in Ranked?? that's cowardice y'know.
I have seen a lot of experienced coaches taking advantage of inexperienced coaches and it's disgusting.
You should always play against someone of your same level or maybe better if you have the guts..unless someone less experienced want to play against you. That's different.
Posted by pythrr on 2014-04-20 05:39:48
yes, it is called picking. pretty much defines ranked, tbh.
Posted by mike467 on 2014-04-21 01:16:13
So my friend here is my input and its been said but just adding more weight to that argument:
1 Take a short break
2 Watch replays - hindsight is 20/20
3 Play more GC - it's been quiet and it's nice to play in a relaxed environment
4 Take a short break
5 Get back to making sure you do the basics well
6 Take a short break

Hope your back to winning ways soon - another useful tip is ask a friend who you rate to watch some of your games and point out mistakes, really focuses the mind a bit like Ehlers did but over a few games.
