Ogres
Ok, ogres. I love them. My favourite team and I play every game with a big smile on my face with them. Problem is, I'm crap with them. Record is 15/15/104 (on fumbbl) with all the various ogre teams I've had and 4/3/41 with my fave team the Large Ogre Colliders.

I know that ogres are a low tier team and I know that they lack core skill access but I must be making serious errors if I'm playing this bad with them.

I would give examples of bad games but I feel that each one could be explained away with saying "it was bad luck". However I think the body of evidence for bad play is now outweighing bad luck.

Any advice from seasoned ogre players? I'm not gonna stop using them, just want to at least be a bit more competitive and feel like I'm in the game somewhat.

Thanks for reading.

my hat off to you for playing Ogres for so long :D Break Tackle seems to be pretty decent with Ogres

I'd try to run at least 13 men on the roster, so you have some snots to back up snots. I know we've discussed it a couple times, and you've already replaced a couple Ogres who needed a new skill set, and you already picked up RRs (which will help take the team from fun to competitive).

Also, don't be afraid to go for the TTM Touchdown. Ogre ball carriers are unreliable, despite being hard to bring down, and need too many special skill rolls to be worth using as your primary runner. I'd honestly suggest watching Kam or Zed play halflings, as some of the tactics will translate.

Lastly, don't expect to win or be competitive. No matter the situation, I can't even take my Ogres seriously. Even when I have a game well in hand, I expect to lose. I've found, you play Ogres for fun, not for wins.

Pick! Look for bloaty teams that lack block and tackle. I would say Elves, especially Dark Elves are going to be your hardest challenge among Elves. Any Dorf is obviously out. But you need to protect a snot for that OTS or that defensive score with a TTM. Other than that you are going to lose a lot.

Also, with 6 ogres you will get 1 boner a turn. If the first one boners it may be a good call to not roll any more dice to keep the wall up. Ogres game can end as you probably know when 2 or 3 ogres boner in one turn.

I would fire snots who roll a normal skill or get injured. Take DP on doubles. Have 15 players whenever you can. Foul every turn. Get as many 3 dice blocks in each turn as you can. Sometimes you don't want to move the cage, just stand there in the middle of the pitch and block away. Pile on tactically. At least one Ogre with Tackle is essential so take it before Block if you need to. Trap opposition players and hope they start making -2d blocks. Hope they underestimate you. Take risks with break tackle and go for its, play dangerously and get lucky! A 33% win rate is acheivable and i'd consider that good.

"you will get 1 boner a turn"

This should be included in the Ogres playbook.

A good selling point.

Watch cdassak plays / use top cozch stats to see who klows to play them. That beeing said i tried it and still lost almost all my ogres games.

Although it's not a winning move, making 6 PO ogres can make any game within reach and even those that slip through are painful for the opponent.

I feel the same when I play Dwarves or Amazons, I can't seem to do anything right and then the rolls just make my errors even worse.
At least your having fun though, that is an important part of any game. Just keep plugging along and you'll get it some day (either that or play me so I can get a couple wins for my dwarves)

Well, I'm 2/1/18 with my Ogres so your record is superior to mine! I've noticed that rolling doubles on Ogres and taking Block helps :D

BlodgeyDocker's Ogre team "Big iz Beautiful" once kicked the tar out of my Dark Elves & they have a winning record:

I like to go Break Tackle / Piling on for two first normal skills with Guard as third. PO helps you get faster to the next skill, BT gives you mobility. In a new team you have to distribute both (have some ogres with PO and some with BT). For doubles I almost always go Block (maybe one sure hands) for first and Tackle/Dodge for second (I give priority to the tackler than the blodger).
Try to carry with an Ogre unless you are outmuscled and you need all 6 in the blocking wars.
If you foul a lot you ll need more than 13 players.

Well, after reading all of the comments above (thanks for them by the way) I approached my 500th game on the site with renewed enthusiasm. Ogres vs Skaven. I retired an ogre with 5 normal skills before the game and had an mng ogre so I was sitting at 1330tv. Quite a difference from a few games ago when I was paying spiralling expenses.

How did the game go? Well, I drew 1-1. Could have won if I hadn't failed a rerolled bonehead in turn 8 of the first half to walk in a td.

I kept track of my bonehead and it came out as 18 fails out of 60 rolls but I managed it by following NerdBird's (and others) advice of not activating an ogre unless essential. Also I was maximising 3dbs whenever possible and although I only got 2 cas (one of which was my opponent choosing both down on a snotling), I did manage to KO a large amount of players and that really helped.

I'm sure this is Ogre 101 but it helps to be reminded of it often. Thanks all for your comments :)

Being careful with BG activation is valid for several races but not for Ogres. They are your best players, so you need to take the max out of them. Almost always you need to activate them all for blocking or repositioning. On rare occasions you can ommit an activation if you really need them to tie up opponents. But generally you have to activate them all and live and die by their bonehead.
