My ten year Fumbbl anniversary is coming up on October 7th. Back in 2004, I had just moved back into Canada, from 5 years of working up and down the west coast of the USA. As Ive stated before in previous blogs, I bought the 2nd Edition game way back in 1989, as a rebellion against D&D and got all my friends to quit that silly game and start playing BB instead. We had a league going for 2 1/2 seasons. It was hard to keep guys enthusiastic during Jr high school, because we all started dating girls and playing sports. Better things to do back then. :)
Over the next 10 years we had several small leagues going on. stopping with a broken 3rd Edition. Then in our early 20s, we all kind of fell away from it. We all still talked and joked about our past seasons on a regular basis. One of my best friends
generaljason and my Twin Brother
lordchaos became interested again and had started looking into the game in 2004. They found Fumbbl in the Talk Blood Bowl Forums. A new version had came out since we had played last, and they instantly called me to come over. That day was October 7th 2004 and we were all 29 years old. Fumbbl got us back into playing Blood Bowl. This time for good. We started a new league in 2005and have had 27 seasons since. It started off small. We had 6 guys, and then 8. We restarted the league at season 10 when LRB5 came out, with ironically 10 guys. Next Season it was 20, the next 24, and the next 28. It spiralled quite quickly as all Blood Bowlers from the Lower mainland of Vancouver started converging into one league. I never knew there were so many people that played this awesome game. We even have had a season with 46 guys at one point. Now we have petered down to a respectable 38. It goes like that every 4 seasons or so. Down a bit and then up a bunch. One thing I should mention that since the start, we have always had a ten game SET SCHEDULE. Never more or never less. Its hard to believe to the masses out there that we have successfully done this, but we have. I say WE, but truly the other two mentioned have done 99% of the work. Some other guys like
Poundfist and
Spaceman_Spiff have been key guys running the league as well. 17 seasons since we changed to LRB5/LRB6. Still going strong. I play 2 different Fumbblers tomorrow. Both new to our league, but not new here. I will let them mention their names if they want to. Im gonna crush em tomorrow!
In a week Ill be scratching off a bucket list item to play at the Chaos Cup. Im half way regretting my team choice as this will be the biggest tourney ever in North America. There are currently 82 coaches attending. I chose a fun Underworld roster aiming for Casualties, but Im sort of thinking about possibly changing it. I have more fun not putting attention on winning/competing as I find the Fun of the game gets lost when stressing about failure. BUT, this is the biggest Tourney ever on the continent. I know I don't have a true shot, but I did runner up in my first Major Tourney (Spike! 2011) with a Top Table tie. If you look it up I came in fourth, but that was due to painting scores. I had a 4-0-2 record, tying 0-0 in the last game to the winning Dwarves. I feel I came in 2nd as both teams below me had losses and same amount of wins as I. That was 44 coaches I think. 1/2 the size. Anyways, Ill talk it over tomorrow with my league mates about what I should do about it. Ill probably keep the current roster as I have spent the time painting over the last month.
So the point of the blog; I am very thankful for Fumbbl being here as it helped renew a love of a game. Ive sent so many people here to learn the game before playing in our league. Its a great tool to get a bunch of games in to gain valuable experience. On October 7th, my anniversary, I will be getting up early and staying up late, doing a marathon of Fumbbl. I am challenging everyone and anyone who has been around for a long time.. I still have my original team sitting on here
Tribe Called Death and it challenges everyone. Namely the Agility Monsters, Watchmen Theory, They Only Come Out at Night, Punish the Monkey, Pig Sty Alley, (most of Lustrian Qualifier Group V) and hopefully Left My Heart In San Francisco. Id like to play Wreckages Slann team as well. I've watched many of these teams games over the years and I don't care about winning, I care about having a Euphoric day of taking on the best and most established teams around. As its hard to organize so many games, maybe these guys will play a Unscheduled Smack with me. Like the old days. Anyways, Ill blog more about this in the coming days. The only bad thing about my anniversary is it is a Tuesday. Not a premium BB day, but Ill make the best of it. So hey there Chums, lets have some Fun!
