High Elf painting blog part 1
So after many months of hard work and experimenting with new techniques I have finally completed the Savage Orcs team. They are at this very moment winging their way to Topper. I have wrapped them up very securely so hopefully they should survive the trip intact.

Not many new pics of these to show as I have already put them in old blogs, but there is a full team shot. I always have difficulty taking these as the camera tends to focus on just certain parts and my light box is a little small. This means no matter how many pics I take some members of the team will end up in shadow or blurry. They also tend to get a bit crammed in, mind you this does seem rather appropriate for the team and I can see any attempt at taking a team photo being pretty chaotic.

I will post 1 pic of the Black Orcs with their bases completed as they are my favourite players. The yellow chipped armour turned out really well and as the biggest Orcs on the team they are wearing the most. For the bases I designed a number font that would be easily identifiable but also look like crude early writing. I love creating unique teams but am always aware of the practicalities of using them in games. Opponents shouldn’t be disadvantaged by having to continually ask what positional and/or number each player is.

A complete set of photos of this team and all the others I’ve done can be found at my Facebook group. This gives me a place to keep track of everything and has https pics to load here. The group has just passed 50 members too which is not bad.

With them done I can now turn my attention to the 3 other ongoing projects that have been a bit neglected recently.

I’m wrestling with colour schemes for the Nurgle team at the moment, my test models using purple instead of green have been a bit bland, but I have bought a couple of new paints to experiment with and hope to get that sorted soon.

I’m painting 7 of the normal goblins at once, but they are still at the base colour stages so won’t make very interesting photos.

The High Elves have made the most progress as the NAF GT is only a couple of months away. After agonising on colour scheme for ages I am afraid I have wimped out and gone for a rather unoriginal one of blue, silver and white with gold mail, dark brown boots and gloves and yellow details. These are all colours I am good at painting and I was never quite happy with any of the test models. I did consider swapping yellow for green as these are the colours from the sea elf navy that many of the bodies come from, but preferred the yellow to match the gold mail.
One good thing is that these models are quick to paint, with little to no skin on show I should hopefully be able to get them done ahead of schedule. I will add a little more variety to the positionals and star to make them stand out and avoid boredom.

So here are pics of the first 4 linemen all completed. I’ve tried to model them in dynamic poses since they are elves, but a couple of the linemen are static (probably the poor sods who will get stuck on the LOS). I still need to do numbering and their bases, I’m debating whether to give them plain green grass or maybe some sort of light grey and smoother version of astrogranite.

The rest of the team have been fully built and undercoated, here are the other 4 linemen.

I’ve always seen high elf catchers as more than simple receivers, they are safeties and ball hunters as well. Therefore I have tried to give them varied look, the lion heads were tricky to model without looking too clumsy but I managed to get them to fit after some trimming. I’m still trying to decide if they should get traditional white lion pelts or yellow ones. Both colours fit the team, but yellow does have the advantage of being catcher colours.

I had all the plastic dragon prince heads to choose from but opted for the smaller versions since some were a little bulky. They are modelled in a running pose, but I’m probably the least happy with them out of all the team. I will have to make up for that with the painting, I can make their dragon scales green, red or even light blue. Again red has the advantage of being Blitzer colours.

I really like how the throwers look, the pose on the guy on the *left* is a bit odd, he’s supposed to be getting ready for a hand off. I used the torso of the hero from the sky chariot and wanted to keep that. The other guy is one of my fave models in the team. I can either give them gold or silver helmets and the “feathers” will alternate between blue and either yellow or white. Yellow matches the other parts of their armour but white is for throwers.

I had planned on doing Prince Moranion as a star, but the torso and head I got for him looked a bit rubbish. He also suffered from the bland pose of the 2 normal blitzers, plus I have already done him using the standard GW model for Russo’s High Elves.

Whilst Soeren is not the most useful star available (that title would go to Eldril) I do think he best represents the character of the High Elf team, arrogant, flashy and preferring to stay away from the messy, violent stuff.
I want him to stand out from the other throwers since they are both quite elaborate but still fit in with the rest of the team. So will likely switch some of the team colours round and/or give him more gold armour (maybe painted as NMM gold).

Fantastic and inspiring! Well done. I had the same idea for my HE team, although I prefer throwers without helmet.
Posted by Topper on 2014-03-02 12:58:55
Hehe the Squig gets a spear up its behind because that model symbolizes the bomber. So a little prod in the end sends a Squig flying in some random direction. Like the idea as it matches the flavor of crazy Goblins and befits the team. The Orcs a by far the best you´ve made yet - IMO. However the High Elves are really cool models, and I think the color scheme is really great :)

PS: Since the blog has an avg. of 6, I think ShangoFou is pulling a leg here ;)
