Walking into the valley of ranked games...
I haven´t played in (R) for quite awhile, have mostly played the odd academy matchup and speced some really good games. However I am getting hooked on fumbbl again and want to play more games and was thinking about starting with a fresh team in ranked. In the past I have mostly gone for Orcs first and Undead second. Orcs are a team that has suited my rather limited skills. Rarely outbashed and tend not to die as soon as others might. And I really, really like the mummies, but four of them, as in Khemri, is just abit much for me. Just my personal opinion, please do not take offence.
I have to admit now, looking at my matchrecord in Ranked, that the matches I have played in ranked have been predominantly against teams that couldnt inflict alot of cas on the orcs. And I have to take responsibility for that. Must have been pixelhugging on my part, and that has to stop. If I want to progress as a coach, I have to play against harder teams and better coaches (easier said than done for me, the task seems rather daunting).
It is just a game, I know that, but there is always a desire and a hope not to make a big fool of myself when I play. And yes, I do like teambuilding.
Anyway, enough excuses and ramblings about the past from me, lets look forward.
What I am thinking teamwise for the fresh start in ranked is chaos. Will be going for the all beastman build with 4 rr at startbuild as this seems to be the most sensible build.
Chaos, in my eyes, will also be a bashy team, however it does feel not as frontloaded as the orcs I have played in the past. And with only beastmen at startup should force me to play a different game.
I do so wish to get better as a coach. Is this the correct way to go? Should I perhaps go for a completly different team/race? Woodies or skaven?
I have tried skaven in academy, but doubt I have the skill to keep them alive for more than a game or two.

The bottomline is this.
I think I have the basics down. Have played with/tried out all the standard races.

Congratulations on your attitude and your decision to move forward - you sound like someone I'd like to play against (and not because I hope to win easily ;-) ).
Chaos is, as far as I know, quite difficult. They have a lot of potential, but they're quite weak at lower levels. Discussions about what would be a good team for learning went on and on, I think if you want to go beyond orcs, humans or undead would be a rather good choice, because they're not to specialized, don't die too fast (well, except for the ghouls maybe) and you can try different things with them. If you already have some experience with undead, why not try with them?
Finally, you should consider whether to start in [R] or with the new client. I would recommend the latter, but since you like team development (same here!) and the FFB teams will get deleted in a few month, probably better start [R] and bring your team over when FUMBBL moves to FFB completely. In that case (as studman said), if you want to play chaos, keep in mind they will be able to take mutations on normal rolls. So take skills they won't be able to get on normal rolls after the transition (there are enough of them like basically dodge or passing skills).

If you're looking for expanded horizons, change gears, not flavors. If orcs are frontloaded AG3 bashers, chaos are just backloaded AG3 bashers. Despite the many obvious differences, there are a lot of similarity in how the two races play.
Turn over a new leaf and try DE or HE. With most players having av8, they are still sturdy enough that they aren't dying constantly, and you can play a lot of ball with them.
If you're interested in curing your pixel-hugging, there are 2 ways to go with that, IMO. One is to play a regenerating race, which you're considering anyway. The other is to play skaven. If you go with the latter, just constantly remind yourself "they're just rats" when one of them is horribly maimed. Don't even apo rookie linerats, don't even give it a second thought. "They're rats, and rats die". It's a good lesson to learn, especially when you learn how to turn cannon-fodder into victory by playing aggressively for the win at the expense of player safety. It's not about keeping rats alive, it's about winning with them. Replacement rats are cheap.

If you are looking to improve your tactics, rookie chaos teams will certainly help. Not having any skills will force you to truly decide where you must burn that reroll, and when allowing a turnover is the best option. Depending on Nuffle's will, it might be a while before your team decides that it wants to win too. As it was mentioned by Grod though, the overall play style can be similar to orcs.
You may want to try a necro team as well, they play considerably differently then an Undead team. Between the ghouls and the werewolves, odds are you will become jaded to the loss of players at a fairly quick rate as well.

There will be as many opinions as there are people on how you should go about improving your coaching skills (my own would be to spec some of the great games going on now in the FUMBBL Cup, along with speccing other matches between good coaches) - I just want to give kudos to your attitude on playing and wanting to get better. Bully for you.

Kudos on looking to expand your coachie horizons, and better yourself.
I too have been trying to do that recently (for about the umpteenth time), this time by giving the elven races a proper go, mostly by way of using Helfs in ffb (with a view to making my draft decisions easier when SWL switches over).
I'm finding it difficult making the switch, despite what the match record shows. I've never been a terrible pixel hugger (I'm also terrible with orcs, mediocre with undead, and only recently started using chaos), having almost 'accidently' finding myself a Lizardmen coach.
I recommend stepping right outside your comfort zone - and in this case, I think skaven or norse could work well. If you prefer a bashy style, both teams can work, but both teams will also cure you of any pixel hugging disease, and quickly.
You might even find you have a natural flair for one of them.
Either way, its part of the great bloodbowl journey, and I wish you well on it!
