Goblins 2.0 Painting Blog - part 2
With the colour scheme decided I was able to begin work on the goblins, choosing the normal players to start with. I usually go for the 0-16 position first as they are the baseline for the team that all the positionals, big guys and stars will refence if you want the team to be coherent.

I did make one tweak with the scheme and changed the trouser colour from cream to light grey and make all the straps, belts and gloves mid brown. Getting the colour balance of the models right is quite tricky and the purple I was using was a strong colour that clashed with the green goblin skin. So I used 2 tones (black shirts and very light grey trousers) along with mid-brown for the peripherals to avoid overloading the models.
I also added battle damage to all the armour pieces. This is extra work and not always appropriate depending on the team but it does look good and is suitable for players who get hit a lot and don’t take care of their kit like goblins. I gave the few metal pieces of kit both a black and brown wash to make them look a bit rusty and dirty too. I didn’t apply any dirt to their trousers as I feel too much battle damage can overload the model and whilst realistic they end up a grubby mess.

Pete is attending a tournament in November, so my first priority is to get that squad ready. This consists of 2 trolls, 9 goblins, the bomber, saw, looney and Fungus. The other 2 weapons and remaining goblins can always be sent separately if I can’t get them all done in time.

The first 5 goblins were built straight out of the box with no conversions. Their heads were interchangeable so I tried to pick those that would give the impression of the most variety. Certain races are very individualistic and messy so would not suit having identical players. Since Blood Bowl teams only consists of a few models then I always like each player to be unique.

The next 4 goblins were all converted to some degree, this was mostly done via arm or shoulder pad swaps. Though I did also use heads from other goblins and chop the decoration off one of the helmets. The biggest conversion was the goblin running with the ball who used arms from the goblin player being held by troll. I only wanted one of the trolls to be throwing a goblin so had these bits left over. The head from that same model was given to another goblin and I have plans for the legs as well.

The first group of player pics were taken before I had added the numbers and completed the bases. The numbers were painted by hand in the same style as the orc transfer sheet. For the base I added crackle paint to make dry cracked earth and then some flock and scrubby grass. This made the pitch look messy and poorly cared for.

Forgeworld has released 6 of the secret weapons; the bombardier, chainsaw looney and fanatic. I liked the sculpts of these models, but wanted to tweak them slightly. The chainsaw got a welding mask as I thought that looked cool and wanted the hockey mask to go to another goblin. I swapped the resin iron ball with a spiked plastic one from a storm fiend just to lighten it up and add variety.
These were all painted in the same way as the rest of the team as their weapons were very obvious. I copied how forgeworld had put flames at the bottom of the bomb and tried to get a realistic look to the smoke.
I added some gore to the blades of the saw, but again didn’t go overboard as too much mess detracts from the paint job.

I liked the style of the new troll but really wasn’t a fan of the pose, it was mostly his left arm as it hid most of the detail of the model. So I decided to reposition his arm and cover the join with the shoulder pad from the other troll. I also swapped the head of the goblin with that of a 40K grot so he had flying goggles.
The troll’s skin had a darker green basecoat as this makes him look tougher and more weather beaten than the squishy gobbos. I wanted a colder green as well so used white rather than yellow for the highlights, going all the way to almost pure white for his belly, ears and throat. I didn’t think he suited a smooth stomach so left some quite extreme shading on it as well as some very sharp highlights on his limbs. I was pleased with how his skin turned out and big guys are usually my fave models to paint. The scales and spikes were painted black with grey highlights as I didn’t have any kit of his that would look good painted that colour.

I have been favouring grey bones lately but thought that was too close to the team colour used for trousers/his loin cloth and went with cream instead, this also makes them look fresher, as if they are from more recently slain opposing players.
The goblin was painted in the same way as the others in the team. He didn’t turn out quite as well as I’d hoped, something about the skin and clothing was not quite right but couldn’t put my finger on what.
