The modern Sweden is a secularized nation, where religion have lost it's meaning. Our mentality though is still very much coloured by our Lutheran heritage and oldfashioned rural morality. Virtues is Sweden are for instance: hard work, being low key, duty and shyness. The most important rule to know in Sweden is Jantelagen, which primary message is" No one is better than anyone else". In the Swedish culture things like extravagance, plenty, glamour and asserting yourself are seen as bad things. The more like everyone else you are, the better. To tell a Swede that she is ordinary is one of the highest compliments she or he can get, even if the person is royal, have gotten a nobelprize or is a rockstar. In Sweden we even have a national word. The word "lagom". Some think this word is derived from the Vikings. It cannot be translated into most languages. When the vikings only had one goblet to drink from, everyone had to drink just enough so everyone else could get some. That is "lagom". "Lag" coming from the Swedish word for team or group of people that is lag and "om" meaning around. "Lagom" = "Around the team". To make it easy, "lagom" means not doing something too much or too little, but just the right amount.

This mentality of "lagom" also let other people think that we are very unpatriotic. Swedes don't wave flags and we don't tell other people how good our culture is. But we Swedes can be very proud of Sweden, but since we know that our culture is better than everyone else's and it is wrong to tell them we just put on a smug smile. Lately the government have tried to make June 6th, the Swedish National Day a holiday. It hasn't worked out very well. I have never seen a Swede celebrate our national day, and if they did they would be considered very un-Swedish, which starngely enough in Sweden can be a positive word, but which in this context is seen as very negative.

Some historians explain this seemingly unpatriotic behavior with not celebrating our National Day with that we have no real event to connect to 6th of June. Ok, in 1523 Gustav Vasa, the founder of Sweden was elected king on that date and in 1809, king Karl XIII signed the new guidelines for the government which are in place still today. Our neighbours, Norway for instance celebrate their National Day May 17th very much, but that is the day they became a free country and didn't have to live under foreign rule anymore. There you see, sometimes we Swedes can be nice and give our old occupied countries their freedom.

Another reason might be that we Swedes cannot imagine Sweden not to exist. Most countries in the world have been involved in wars, Sweden haven't for about 200 years. We can't even understand how a war would impact our country, and we cannot comprehend the fact that Sweden might not exist.

Then we have the subject of honouring the flag. In Sweden most people don't. To honour the flag would seem strange and under the best of circumstances a bit questionable. This was best shown when a Swedish artist made pictures and statues of Muhammed as a dog. Something that of course irritated many muslim people over the world. Consequently Swedish flags where burnt in the Middle-east and it almost went unnoticed in Sweden, except for those who commented that it was strange for people to burn our flag, but if they want to, no problem. We do have more after all, and we even have factories who make flags.
