In 1991, Guns N' Roses were on top. Having just released the epic double-album 'Use Your Illusion' and embarked on a massive World tour, the band was speeding towards breaking point. Despite being the flag-bearers for an MTV inspired high point for excess rock n' roll, when they returned from tour, drugs, fatigue and bickering threatened to make the band implode. When Nirvana's 'Nevermind' record came out and made Grunge / alternative rock cool, the sex drugs n' rock n' roll lifestyle Gn'R followed suddenly seemed old fashioned, and the band faded from view.

Only a half-assed punk covers album followed before the line-up disbanded. Axl, the pompous sod that he is, bought the rights to the band name from the rest of the original line-up, and started hiring friends to fill positions, as he began work on the new studio album, 'Chinese Democracy'.

The name has become somewhat a joke to the music fraternity. 16 years on from the last original release under the Gn'R banner, we still await Axl n' friends' alleged masterpiece. The ironic thing is, I paid good money to go on a nostalgia trip and see various Gn'R line-ups over the last 5 years, and despite Axl's voice not being what it once was, the teased performances of tracks apparently on the new album didn't sound half bad. Will the new material ever see the light of day? Will Axl ever ditch those horrible hair extensions? Has he had work done? Will China actually have a democratic system before the record comes out?

Who knows. Beauty of it is, some people still care!
