THE STORY SO FAR

Chapter 1 - The drunken oath

Imagine a tiny, old Irish pub in the deep of the woods. Imagine at late night, 10 drunken, sad gnomes whining about their misfortunes, women they've lost, children they miss, homes they haven't, jobs from which they were laid off. They are broken, bankrupted, abandoned, a total mess. Well, enough is enough, they decide. A brief huddle, some other pint of Guinness, the light of many pipes and the deal is made. No use in crying, they must do something. With bravery they make an oath: they're gonna play Blood Bowl 'til the end of their lives and earn money and fame, the wheel will turn for them, they're sure. The deal is made, they have decided roles and positions, but they need an eleventh player. Suddenly, the door opens and a wretched, miserable figure steps in. Dripping with rain, thirsty as hell, dressed in rags, he sits at the counter and buys himself a pint with his last coin.
"Are you okay, son?" asks the bartender. "Who do ya are?"
"Davy Socket's the name, sir" he replies. "Lost my girlfriend today, the witch ran away with a troll. Said she loves him. Just wanna drown myself in beer, so enough with chatting."
The gnomes at the table look each other, they're damn sure they've just found the missing player. Picknose (R.I.P.) approaches the young stranger and puts a hand on his shoulder.
"Come on, son, ain't no use in crying, forget that woman. Come with us, we're starting a team. It'll be fun."
"Wha!" Davy answers "I'm no good at playing. Ain't gonna go far, man. Leave me alone."
"But you must try, kid! Just one time!"
"Okay. Maybe I'll get killed and save those razorblades I keep home for special occasions. Let's do this."
And Picknose smiles and puts a hand in his pocket. He picks a shamrock and gives it to Davy.
"Nah, you won't die, friend. You're lucky. Take this, it will bring you good luck."
"Thanks, old man. Anyway: what's the team name?"

Chapter 2 - The long bloody trail

Shamrock Armada was the name, and their first matches were bloody. They keep losing games and players, struggling to score and collecting bad results. But Davy was a beast. He seemed to be born to be a daredevil, and his broken heart found relief in beating down opponents. The bigger they were the harder he bashed them, without fear, launching himself into suicidal attacks like a downsized kamikaze. One day he was hit hard by a minotaur and suffered a bad permanent injury, his knee broke down, he was permanently crippled. With hard efforts he started the hospital rehab, then back on the pitch again, with renewed fury. In the meantime Shamrock Armada collected few victories and a bunch of draws, but the losing rate was still high. The gnomes didn't care: the simple fact of playing kept them away from their misery, and they started to make a name for themselves in Stunty. Davy's second injury came not long after: a goblin hit him while he was on the ground, breaking his skull and causing him a serious concussion. Looked like his end, a poll was opened to decide his destiny.
"Fire me" he said to St. Patrick's Fist, the almighty cannon. "I'm useless."
"No way, man" was the answer "You gotta play for the good ol' Picknose, the gnome who saved you from being a scum. He's watching ya from Fiddler's Green, don't disappoint him. We'll patch ya well, and you'll be a legend. Come on, get out of this hospital bed. We need ya!"
Davy stayed with the team. The long bloody trail continued.

Chapter 3 - The age of the Crippled Legend

So the Armada kept playing, and Davy kept bashing even if he was crippled and with a metal plaque in his skull. Things went normal 'til the final match against a great team, the Hungry Hungry Hippos. It was Davy's chance to become a legend, his way to be one of the strongest players in Stunty. The atmosphere was tense, every player knew he could not see another dawn, the presence of Number Two, most valuable player in Stunty, was feared by both his fellas and opponents. And then... the massacre. In a furious, brutal clash Davy injured an opponent and killed another one, Number Two was permanently crippled by a bomb and the Armada scored and won! Every gnome on the planet cheered in happiness, a 3-day-party was held to celebrate the maybe most legendary daredevil of all times. Davy got another +ST on his skill roll, and grew double the size he was. Every opponent team trembled in fear, he is virtually unstoppable now.
"I want to dedicate this day to the memory of Picknose, a departed friend to whom I owe everything" he said to the press. Then he put an hand in a pocket, apparently searching for something, and gave a stroke to an old wrinkled shamrock.
