“So Coach Swift, what do you think about your team’s execution?” Sports reporters crowded around anxiously awaiting to capture another gem with pencils pressed against pads of parchment.

“I’m in favor of it,” was Valen’s response. He squinted his eyes and puffed a couple of times on his cigar – a bad habit he had picked up during a tour of the human kingdoms and almost unheard of in the Uthulian realm. “Next question!”

When Blood Bowl was first played Elves disdained the game. They believed there was no more to Blood Bowl than two teams of uncivilized yobs pummeling each other senseless in a display of mindless violence. However it didn't take them too long to realize that there is nothing to beat seeing your team wipe out the opposition and win a hard-fought Blood Bowl game!

“How do you respond to your detractors, those saying the Kallahir Swifts are too old to win anymore?” Heads turned from the bold inquisitor back to Coach. The crowd seemed to collectively lean back in anticipation of an angry response.

“Orcwash! My veterans will wipe the pitch with any of these unskilled royal momma’s boys any day,” Swift scowled and pointed his cigar at the young reporter. “You can’t buy wins in this game, boys.”

Between 2461 and 2488 two Elven teams were at the top, the Galadrieth Gladiators and the Elfheim Eagles, with both teams winning a Blood Bowl final. However with the collapse of the NAF and the introduction of the open tournament format many Elven teams, the Eagles and the Gladiators included, had to rely on the financial backing of the Elven Kingdoms to survive. After all, the costs of hair gel, mirrors and the dry cleaning for the uniforms can add up quickly. As many teams accepted gracious donations from the Princes and nobles of their homeland they quickly found out these 'donations' came with a price. Those same benefactors would often insist on playing for the team as well.

“So coach” a reporter towards the back of the crowd timidly raised his pencil, “what will it take to get your elves back on top?” A few others nodded their approval and eagerly awaited the answer.

Valen sat down on the bench and folded his arms across his chest. “Motivation boys! Motivation...” Coach nodded his head and stared off into the distance.

Initially the mixture of the highborn and the professional players was a disaster for many Elven teams. The Princes would often buy their way into the position they wanted, relegating many long standing players to lineman duties. Who can forget Valen Swift's face as he stood on the line when the Eagles faced off against the Chaos team Kill Fury! As the Elven teams filed up with the rich, many of the experienced Elven players that had played under the NAF's rule retired.

Emboldened by the less than furious and somewhat puzzling response to his previous question, the reporter followed up “If money doesn’t make a difference then what will be their motivation?” A murmur raced through the High Elves as they tried to guess at what besides money could inspire a higher level of performance.

“A trophy!” Valen Swift smiled with his cigar clenched firmly between his teeth.

But not many retired players can stay away from the field of glory, and soon teams started forming that consisted only of veteran players that missed the 'good old days'. Dusting off the old uniforms, donning the face masks and spiking the hair up the new 'old' teams took off and became the equals on the pitch of their richer cousins, while reminding many an aged fan of the old NAF Elf teams.

“Is it made of gold,” a reporter in the front row with furled brow blurted out?

“Son,” Valen shook his head, “ were you born with ‘thick skull’ or something? I said it’s not about the money!” Coach Swift sat back and sighed. “When the game was first dedicated to Nuffle, the greatest warriors would hold aloft a trophy in front of their adoring minions after defeating all foes. They played only for glory!” Valen clenched his fist and shook it at the crowd.

And so the High Elves have found themselves split into two types of teams. On the one hand you have the relatively inexperienced, but well equipped, High Elves from the noble caste and on the other you have the more experienced, but less well equipped, 'Pro' Elves, as they became known.

Reporters shot quizzical glances back and forth. Finally, one had the nerve to ask a question “Coach, so what was this trophy called anyways?”

“Why, they named it after the greatest coach ever – he was a god among men! His name was ‘Vince’ and historians think he must have been from the woodland realm because he was know as the ‘lumber deity!’” Coach beamed with pride. “And I’m bringing some of those ancient accolades back…to inspire not only my team, but ‘pro’ elves everywhere.”

E.L.F. Season IX “Snapshot” Standings

30 active teams in the fifth week of play in Season IX with 10 of them Pro Elves. startrek.nl is still currently in 1st place but only by one point over the Forest Fools! Two more teams give chase with scores in the high 300’s. Of the top five teams, only startrek.nl has yet to complete the cycle and as such can put some space between itself and the pack by finishing off Category C. Four of the 5 categories changed hands in the past week.

A special congratulations to Tophat and his team Glory Daze for being the 1st Pro Elves to complete the cycle and earn recognition in the ‘Pro’ Hall-of-Fame – one of Season IX’s special challenges to encourage Pro Elf participation.

In other news, the EMU Reloaded has kicked off its Season 4 in the last week – a season declared as The Great E.L.F. Hunt! The extra scoring bonus vs. these EMU teams is already making a difference in the E.L.F. standings so be on the lookout for the opportunity to play these matches. And if you want, feel free to flaunt your E.L.F. team’s victories in the recruitment thread!

Also, Synn was asking me again to see if any of the E.L.F. coaches were interested in getting together a team (Team E.L.F.) for his stable league. If anyone is interested in organizing a 4-man team, please shoot me a PM and I’ll let the rest of the league members know.

I really hope that Startrek.nl dont get another score , at the moment my team just cant get themselves sorted out , (mainly due to a useless Apothecary ) so actually scoring any points seems very unlikely .

The reporters crowded around Valen Swift as he threw his arm around the shoulder of Tophat and used his knuckles to drive the champagne further into the coach's scalp. They squinted and attempted to shield their eyes from both the alcohol as it drenched the scene and the mayhem as it destoyed the locker room. Valen hoisted the Trophy of Lombardi high in the air and handed it to coach Tophat - players and fans let out a collective howl of joy...

"Admit it, you all thought I was crazy!?!" Coach Swift paused to light a fresh cigar, took several furious puffs, and blew a mouthful of smoke in the faces of the tourney hounds. "A great coach knows what truly motivates an athlete..."

Valen paused to take a swig from a full bottled passes to him, gave his signature scowl to the reporters, and turned away to rejoin the celebration.
