CBBS Special Report: CBBS Final Rankings

It's that time of year folks! Bowl season is mere days away but we need to determine who is going to what game. Thus the CBBS is doing its part by releasing its final poll, which is 1/3 of the required formula for the final BCS Standings. Recently the +/- 1 bcs point for rivarly games was recently included into the bcs points for each team (teams that received or lost a point have an asterisk next to them in the rankings.) The biggest difference it made was in the Beast, where Nibraskah fell from 2nd place to 4th behind PainState (whom they also lost to H2H,) and the BlackKnights (who took 2nd due to their rivalry boost from the Nevada win and the tiebreaker over Pain via their H2H win.)

Recall that for our CBBS rankings, we only give 2 pts for the Non-AQ teams (whos points are in italics,) in order to accurately rank them with the BCS teams. So without further delay, here are the final CBBS rankings:

1a. Hawaii University (7-0-2) 21 pts
1b. Oregon Waterfoul (6-3-0) 21 pts
3a. California (5-1-3) 17 pts*
3b. Ohio State (7-2-0) 17 pts*
5a. BlackKnights (4-2-3) 15 pts*
5b. PainState (4-2-3) 15 pts*
5c. Yale Bulldogs (6-3-0) 15 pts
8. Nibraskah (4-3-2) 14 pts*
9a. Minni (3-4-2) 13 pts
9b. Buffalo (4-1-4) 13 pts
9c. Virginia Tech (6-1-2) 13 pts
12a. UCon Huskies (3-4-2) 12 pts*
12b. UTEP (5-2-2) 12 pts
14a. Michigan (5-2-2) 11 pts*
14b. Nevada (4-0-5) 11 pts*
14c. Torxas State (3-2-4) 11 pts
17. OVU (3-2-4) 8 pts
18. Vandy (2-1-6) 7 pts
18b. Texas (3-1-5) 7 pts
20. Don't care about the rest.

CBBS Special Report: Final BCS Standings

With the coaches polls tallied, the final BCS Standings were finally calculated! After some discussion, the legendary Gogre Keg Standings are now included into the formula. The final bcs standings are computed as: RFA ranking (x.3) + Gogre ranking (x.1) + CBBS ranking (x.3) + Coaches ranking (x.3)

Without further delay, here are the final BCS standings (and thus likely pairs of bowl matchups,) for season 10:

1. Oregon
2. Hawaii
3. Cal
4. BlackKnights
5. PainState
6. Nibraskah
7. Minni
8. Yale
9. Buffalo
10. Va Tech
11. UCon
12. Ohio State
13. Nevada
14a. Michigan
14b. Torxas State
16. Utep
17. Vandy
18a. OVU
18b. Texas

CBBS Report: Bowl Game Announcements!!!

It's that time of year folks! Bowl season is upon us, and we have eight great matchups for NCBB fans to watch. Without further delay, here they are:

ImageMcNurgle's Bowl: Navy Midskeletonmen (1-0-8.) vs Vampirebilt Commonthralls (2-1-5)
The consolation bowl for the two lowest rated teams in the NCBB this season, the McNurgle's bowl will see two struggling programs attempt to turn things around with a rare victory with the same matchup for the second year in a row. This game should be interesting as....wait a second, where did the McNurgles' trophy go? Son of a gun, Aenir must have taken it when he ran off for an extended vacation away from the league! We must apologize to the good folks at Vampirebilt for getting cheating out of a bowl opportunity. (In reality we forgot to make one of the bowl games before the FFB conversion hit and we can't make any new tournaments for old teams. So I must apologize to somertown, though perhaps having his team avoid a game vs khemri isn't such a horrible thing.)

ImageGoober Bowl: Michigan Warp Wombats (5-2-2) vs Torxas State Bobkats (3-2-4)
The Goober bowl brings together two power-based teams who love to inflict damage but aren't so good at scoring multiple times. Thus we expect a defensive struggle in this one as both sides look to systematically eliminate the other. One side will eventually grind out a victory as the upstart Michigan Wombats look to represent the Non-AQ group with an upset over Torxas from a BCS conference.

Image Wonderbra Bowl: U.Con. Huskies (3-4-2) vs University of Nevada Wolfpack (4-0-5)
In arguably the most intriguing match up of the bowl season, two programs face off for the second time this year. These two first met wayyy back in week 1 during out-of-conference play, where UCon won easily 2-0. Both teams had up-and-down seasons but could springboard strongly into next year by going out with a win vs their necro brethren.

Image Killer Lite Bowl: Buffalo BullCentaurs (4-1-4) vs Virginia Tech Orcies (6-1-2)
The second of the Non-AQ vs BCS matches, this time Buffalo looks to finally stay (mostly) healthy for a full season and heading into the next one with some upside. Their opponents will be a very solid Va Tech squad, who are very well-coached and are fundamentally sound. This will be a slug-fest and the last one standing will have certainly gotten a well-earned victory.

ImageTossit-os Fiesta Bowl: Mihn'eeSOH'tah Golblen Gogres (3-4-2) vs Yale Bulldogs (6-3-0)
Arguably the top Non-AQ team this season, Yale has been given the double-edged sword of the highest bowl bid for a NonAQ team this year, but also drawing the feared Gogres as their opponent. Although not easily shaken, these freshmen will face the greatest challenge of their careers so far in this bowl. If they can somehow stand toe to toe with the Gogres, or even perhaps manage to defeat them, Yale will position itself for great things in the next few seasons. Regardless of the outcome, this will be a great measuring stick for a promising young program.

ImageDeadEx Orange Bowl: PainState (4-2-3) vs Nibraskah Wanabees (4-3-2)
Both teams must be slightly disappointed to be here, as Nibraskah and PainState were literally neck-and-neck with the BlackKnights for a Rose Bowl bid. Only .4 pts separated the three schools, but the elves (who beat Pain and tied Nib,) had the slight edge. Still, these two tradition-rich programs have a score to settle, as Nibraskah fell to Pain (their first loss of the year,) only a few short weeks ago. It'll be interesting to see whether the rats learned anything from that game and can adjust their tactics.

ImageRose Bowl: California Golden Lizards (5-1-3) vs BlackKnights -I'm invincible! (4-2-3)
The Granddaddy of them all has a rematch from literally one week ago, where the BlackKnights ran circles around the lizards and got the 3:1 victory. Cal couldn't scratch the elven armor, and a bad break/error or two cost them. This is also a rematch of last year's Orange bowl, where again the BlackKnights emerged victorious over Cal. Yet again, the game was perhaps decided by Cal's inability to hurt the elves, despite the large number of blocks thrown in both games. Whether or not the third time will be the charm remains to be seen.

ImageBCS National Championship: Oregon Waterfoul (6-3-0) vs Hawaii University (7-0-2)
Yet again we find the Waterfoul in the title game, for the fourth time in six seasons (and they went to the Rose bowl in the other two.) With two championship trophies, including the one from last season when they defeated a tough Clemson squad, the Waterfoul look to become the first back-2-back NCBB champion ever. But standing in their way is a battle-tested Hawaii squad, who emerged victorious from the Big Beast conference/gauntlet. Although both are easily capable of winning a shoot-out, the two teams are more known for their defensive pressure and ability to force teams out of their comfort zone, and then capitalizing on mistakes. Both squads have some uber-talented players to lead them, and both coaches are top-notch. This is one hell of a matchup (even if it is elf-ball,) and you won't want to miss this game.

Well there you have it folks! All eight awesome bowl matchups have been announced, and hopefully we'll have scheduled times for each pretty soon! Whether you agree with a team's placement or not, the only thing that matters now is how a team performs on the field. No more polls; no more SoS arguments; no more lizard bias! It's time to put up or shut up during bowl season!

Look for individual bowl game previews and predictions in the upcoming days.

Due to the recent selection by the NCBB bowl selection committee to pit Pain State (4-2-3) vs Nibraskah Wanabees (4-3-2) Goblinoids for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (GETA) has filed a lawsuit claiming the rematch to be "cruel and unusual".

When reached for a comment Pain State Coach Da_Todfatha had this to say: "I dont see whats so cruel or unusual about this match up, I mean the concessions stand listing of a single HERGER BURGER available after the game might be a little much, but that's just the kids having fun, you know, unless we actually kill him!"

Nibraskah coach McClean recently received a petition from G.E.T.A. to stop the Pain State vs Nibraskah Orange bowl for reasons of "Cruel and Unusual". When asked by the school newspaper, the nibbler, coach McClean had the following to say on the subject.
"Well it's only Cruel and Unusual because there is no one on the Pain state squad that is even old enough to have a beer with the burger. If it were me, I'd be petitioning the game as well. Or atleast find someone old enough and possibly even tall enough to reach the concession counter."

After speaking more atlength with the coach the nibbler was able to obtain a few more quotes more game related. We asked if the tactics would change any for this matchup vs the a few weeks ago? Coach McClean voiced "Well we got our tail jammed down our throats and only lost 2-1, a few breaks a different direction and we come out of that one Ok. So no main change on theory, as rats we will charge the ball and do whatever we can to get the ball. Unfortunetly that means our guys are going to be in bad situations, but we've been there before."

An easy 2-0 victory for Yale. We have no idea what those ogres were saying half the time...okay, three-quarters of the time - but they were so bone-headed, it made for an easy game...is this really all the AQ could offer us? It felt more like a preseason spring game...not a fearsome bowl game!

Stunner in Goober Bowl, Torxas Wins in Last Second!

Two hard-hitting teams met today in the Planter's Goober Bowl, the Bobkats of Torxas State and their star blitzer Frank Reddic faced off against up and coming Michigan whom sport a defense solid as a wall. Michigan entered the contest 5/2/2 while the Bobkats held a 3/2/4 record in the Smack 7.

The coin toss fell in favor of Torxas state, whom elected to receive the kick. T-shirt Launcher Guy caught the kick and quickly handed off to Reddic who dashed towards the right side of the line. A shift blocking strategy pushed the powerhouses of the Michigan line off midfield. Reddic took advantage of the gap opened up by his front-men, driving down and scoring 6 minutes into the first half. Jon Jensen was awarded the ensuing kick via touchback and began a quick hard drive down field attempting to tie the score before half. A tough defensive stand by the Kats stopped the Wombats attack dead and the half drew to a close.

Your score at half 1-0 Torxas.

The second half began with a quick blitz by Torxas, putting the pressure on Charles Woodson and Dhani Jones. Woodson would handle the rushing Terrance Franks with ease, slamming him to the turf. A hit along the left-hand sideline by Larry Fotte would claim the life of fan-favorite and honorable Torxas team good, Jason Mclean, his ribs fracturing and puncturing the poor soul's heart. Michigan used this new-found momentum to push into Torxa's territory and score with 3:30 left on the board.

Just enough time was left on the board for a single Torxas attempt to send the crowd home early. Bradley George picked up the bouncing kick-off and quickly rifled it to Reddic, whom had blockers on the right side. The safety's of Michigan quickly ran to cover the attack and the game looked to be heading to overtime. A last ditch tackle by Cousin of Benning opened up the a tiny gap for Reddic. Tip-toeing the side-line, Reddic scooted past Dhani Jones and made a break for the endzone. A stumbling bumbling Reddic dove for the line and punched the ball just as the clock struck zero. Once again, Torxas snatched a Bowl game away after a very hard fought battle.

Final Score: 2-1 Torxas

When asked what he was going to do after winning a second consecutive Goober Bowl, Coach Papa B. Jeano proclaimed "I be going to Gogreland!!!"

A hell of a game from Eisen whom played his ass off despite some rather mediocre luck. I've never grabbed a win by the seat of my pants like that and I'd rather never like to do it again. All the credit in the world to E for being a great opponent, I've been graced with two excellent bowl opponents in my time with the league and I thank you guys for that.

-Kryten. An unbeaten regular season and a fourth title game appearance in six seasons...dang.
-Apojar. Not only did he survive the Big Beast conference, but he won the national championship (and vs Oregon, no less.)
-Nicodemus. With two bowl victories in two seasons (granted, bowl wins vs Cal are guaranteed,) the BlackKnights look to be a power for quite some time.
-Ex-convict. We're not sure what's more impressive: four consecutive five-win seasons, or six straight bowl losses.
-Shades. A brutal OoC schedule (vs Hawaii, Nevada, and Cal,) left the team with an 0-3 start, but Buffalo rebounded with a 3-1-1 record in conference play (including a tie vs Oregon.)

Gabbert-Bryant Nominees
-The Gabbert-Bryant award is given to the best quarterback, whether a passer, runner, or combination of the two, in the NCBB. Players are listed in no particular order:

-Daniel Simmons, Wazzu. 5 completions, 4 touchdowns, 10 passing yards, 72 rushing yards, 5 blocks.
-Zach Bolger, Why-Elfing. 6 completions, 2 touchdowns, 40 passing yards, 38 rushing yards, 8 blocks.

Wolfman Nominees
-As most of us know, players in the NCBB are only allowed to play for four seasons, and thus teams are always recruiting promising players to come in and continue on the tradition. This award will be given to the best freshman player from the past season, whether he got a redshirt in the last-last season (in this case 9,) or was hired more recently. The following players are in no particular order:
-Spawn Orkman, PainState. 2 completions, 4 touchdowns, 2 casualties, 18 spps, 7 passing yards, 57 rushing yards, 30 blocks, 1 foul.
-Bryant Moniz, Hawaii. 24 completions, 2 touchdowns, 35 spps, 58 passing yards, 56 rushing yards, 9 blocks.
-Malcome Lane, Hawaii. 2 completions, 11 touchdowns, 1 casualty, 42 spps, -2 passing yards, 135 rushing yards, 14 blocks, 1 foul.
-Robert "Bad" Kough, BlackKnights. 2 completions, 4 touchdowns, 1 casualty, 21 spps, -3 passing yards, 22 rushing yards, 35 blocks.
-Werewolf of London II, Nevada. 5 touchdowns, 3 casualties, 21 spps, 66 rushing yards, 89 blocks.
-Mike Vrabel, Ohio State. 1 completion, 8 casualties, 22 spps, 1 passing yard, 1 rushing yard, 75 blocks.
-Heart Doctor, Yale. 7 touchdowns, 1 casualty, 33 spps, 81 rushing yards, 33 blocks.
-Zach Luckett, Va Tech. 3 touchdowns, 10 casualties, 39 spps, 25 rushing yards, 73 blocks.

So there you have it folks! As you can see, we have numerous worthy candidates for all of the awards, so I expect voting to be very close for most of them. With that said, here are my thoughts on each:

-Hammer: really there is no "standout" candidate in my mind, but it comes down to London II and Luckett, with the slight edge going to Luckett for being far more efficient with his blocks.
-Banger-Hardell: pretty simple IMO, going to Malcom for leading the league in touchdowns, rushing yards, and spps.
-Neeley: the aforementioned Luckett lead the league in casualties and was the most efficient of the nominees.
-Wylie Coyote: a close call for me between Tillard and Wolfman, as the UCon star has been the main running threat for several seasons now, while Wolfman had a promising career ahead of him before falling victim to the dreaded turf monster, which gives him the edge for the award via the lulz.
-SOMUFTEN: going with Apo for overcoming the odds (his team started the year with 10 players,) and winning the championship (and knocking off Oregon in the process.)
-Gabbert-Bryant: apparently Hawaii has good luck with recruiting players with the name "Bryant," as their freshman thrower lead his team to a national championship while being the top passer in both yards and completions.
-Freshman of the Year: this might be the most closely contested and debated award this season, as we have a lot of promising young talent in the league. In this group, we have the league's top passer in both completions and yardage (Bryant,) the top scorer, rusher, and spp-gainer (Lane,) and the top basher (Luckett.) Tis a tough call but Malcom Lane was impossible to stop and obviously had a large contribution to Hawaii's championship season.

Remember folks, awards voting is due on Wednesday, June 1st!!! This gives you 4-5 days to get them in via the 'S10 Awards Voting' pm, or via private PM if you prefer. Take your time and look at the players' skills, stats, and competition, then pick the one you think best fits the description for each award. Or just throw darts at your screen and pick whomever it lands on, I don't care Smile

*Disclaimer: do not throw darts at your screen*

Hi, everyone! I'm joining up -- which means the NCBB has its first Slann team. The Tlaxcua Horned Frogs are ready to go! (And by "go", I mean "die repeatedly, stepped on by some large man in spiky boots.")
