Did you know...

That since the start of the 2nd half of the season including the playoffs White Rock has allowed only 2 TDs?

In the mean time they have put up 20!

That's over 8 games (there was one forfeit).

I'm pretty sure that's my best personal streak for any team, though clearly, elfs have an edge at scoring TDs, but the defense has been exceptional.

In the last 5 games they have allowed zero TDs.

What's your NWFL teams personal best for Defense or Offense?

edit: my R nurgle started on a 9-1-0 streak with zero TDs allowed, but that's R, and I'm a picker, so I don't really count it Wink

My B CD team actually put up a 6-1-0 streak allowing zero TDs... Looks like White Rock needs one more shutout here...

Arizona Night Lizards are on an 8-0 streak vs. teams not from Argentina. 24 Touchdowns scored and 3 allowed in those games.

and 0-1-1 vs. teams from Argentina over that stretch. 1 TD scored and 2 allowed.

Nerf Argentina!

White Rock is on a mission to nerf all of Argintina!

First it was Pucho, then it was Garc, now it will be Kal, then, maybe, it will be Emanukio!

Isn't that all of the Argintines? Hey, rest of the world, get your stuff in gear and stop this argintine domination!

The only game that matters is the last one of the season.

Oh, now I've made myself sad.

Western ReSport –Play-offs Auldspecial

Auld World Conference came and went, already played and settled with one champion: White Rock Mignight. Coach Licker’s dark elves got through three argentinian teams to retain the conference trophy and will play the Superior Bowl against the also argentinian team Argentinian Caudillos, that defeated the battered up chaos team of Butte Kickers, in a surprising match. Can coach Emanukio and his own elves stop midnighters cold and become the first south-american champion of the league? Or will Licker retain the title and be crowned as the second team to win the NWFL twice in a row?

We will know that soon enough, when they face each other in the pitch. Meanwhile, you can have a detailed report of the AWC play-offs, that were quite exciting!

Quarter-finals
White Rock Midnight 3 – 0 Cordoba Fernets

Everything that worked for Cordoba during the regular season didn’t this match. The outstanding campaign performed by the newcomer necromantic team couldn’t withstand the unrelentless pursuit of the more experienced dark elves. Fernets opened the match with their usual “give the ball to the count” tactic, and quickly traded a player: a zombie for a elven journeyman. Midnighters seized the chance to surround the Count, and when he failed a dodge to escape, they quickly stole the ball. Setekh briefly freed it again, but the effort would be moot, a blitz later elves already held the ball again. Coach Pucho then despaired and summoned in the wizard. Unfortunately for him, he had no player in range to recover the ball. Elves simply proceeded to stall until their sixth turn. First half ended without further events, except for the death ‘n resurrection of Pat’ti Younger and the self-injury of a wolf in his last attempt at a TD.

Second half would be a walk in the dark woods for the elves, with their rivals missing a wolf and already a touchdown up and enjoying possession. They quickly screened to their right flank, while necros moved to secure the area. The diversion was successful, as elves rapidly swapped flanks, much to Pucho’s despair. The inevitable touchdown was scored on the following turn. A perfect defense later, last long-shot hope disappeared for the argentinians, specially after a series of skulls showed in their midst. Once more, elves swarmed the Count who was unable to escape with the ball. White Rock scored for the third time on turn 7, and the two remaining turns weren’t enough for the necromantic team.
Cordoba showed an outstanding performance this season and will be a team to follow next tournament. White Rock advanced to face the also argentinian team Buenos Aires Titans.

B.Aires Tangueros 2 – 1 Joplin Disasters
The pact duel seemed better poised for Sutherland’s players, as he held a so-far unbeaten history against coach Kalessin and he had a more developed team. Unfortunately for him, Tangueros found in this match all the good fortune that had been missing in the last part of the regular season.

Joplin mounted a strong LOS with all three big guys in it, and even benefited from an early blitz that almost doomed B.Aires. The inevitable struggle came, as Tangueros tried to break free from the tight grasp that was clutching them. Not good enough, as they had left open a flank to their opponents harassment. Second turn proved their opponents right, as they took out of the match both their only guard and their skaven sweeper. Only luck prevented one dark elf renegade to steal the ball from the other! Coach Kalessin was running with his elf around just to avoid the punches, when misfortune first struck Disasters and took their ogre to the ko box, quickly followed by his fellow minotaur. The miracle now seemed possible. Or nearly so, as Joplin managed their first direct hit on Piazzolla and put him down, even if the bounce favored another tanguero. Turn 4 was all frustration to Sutherlands, as his players kept putting the ballcarrier down, and the ball insisted on going right into his opponents’ hands. When the bounce finally came good for them, a dodge discouraged their aspirations. Ball was again in Piazzolla’s hands. B.Aires hitter took out Joplin’s skaven and allowed his teammate a route to safety and the first touchdown of the match. Disasters couldn’t goblinscore on their last turn and things went to a second half.

Tangueros performed a perfect defense that allowed them to put some pressure on their cousins. Punches started to fly around midfield, with Disasters marginally securing a position and taking out Merello, the dreaded “cuchillero” hitter from Tanguero’s rooster, at least for the match. Infuriated and without clearly thinking, a wizard blasted fire on the Disasters, without much harm done. Misplaced and outnumbered, Tangueros could do nothing to stop the score, while Joplin’s players dedicated to hit, hit and hit, aiming to secure a decisive difference for the overtime. And indeed it seemed like the right path to take, pushing tangueros to the crowd –that showed surprisingly well mannered.

Overtime was a surprise for everyone: Disasters had possession and two more players in the field. But tension run high in these matches and they inadvertently let an opening as their ogre fell down to his own punches. Tangueros pushed aside a marauder and their minotaur run for the glory to put the ballcarrier down. The ball ended in disputed terrain and Piazzolla saw fit to try Nuffle’s favour. Ball kept bouncing and changing hands, until it fell to Tangueros’ field. The defensive plan changed right there and they assumed offensive formation. That change of mindset favored them: they stood Disaster’s pressure, darted their elf forward, dodged and pass with the marauder, and ended with infuriating blocks. A turn and chainpush later, Piazzolla once again scored and put the Tangueros where they had never been: conference semifinals. Now beware, B.Aires: Disasters were lucked off the semifinals of the conference, but have vowed revenge!

Semi-finals
Buenos Aires Titans 0 – 2 White Rock Midnight

Titans started with possession and a nice set of hits. White Rock set for defense and moved a blitzer forward, while the woodies tried to set up a cage. But, as they should know, caging isn’t the best defense against leaping and supported elves! Aaron Thude jumped right in the midst of the defense and lucked a single blow against the ballcarrier. McDowel then retrieved the ball and Titans couldn’t free it again in their turn. For that, they’d have to wait until the following turn. But then the first injury would came and White Rock would redouble their pressure. Buenos Aires attempted a complex screen tactic, but eventually failed a rush and the dark elves took back possession. Not only that, but a evil foul killed wardancer super-star Demelli, much to his coach grief. That mostly settled the match, as their numbers continued to dwindle due t ko’s. Titans couldn’t trespass the dark elf barrier in the last turn, nor establish their own meat wall, and Midnight scored in turn of the half.

Midnight had possession immediately after their score, and even enjoyed some bigger numbers. Much so that not even a perfect defense helped Titans to stop them from scoring again. Darkers pushed forward, fearless of the consequences. It’s true that the wood elves managed to take out of the field a few opponents, gaining a brief respite and opening some holes in the defense. But luck wouldn’t help the argentinian elves and White Rock managed to ease the pressure from their ballcarrier a few turns later. Titans kept trying without faltering in their intent, but they couldn’t put down McDowel until turn 6. An amazing move from Martin Karadagián gave woodies some hope, but not been able to cover him led to a blitz, the defending champions recovered the ball soon enough and scored on turn 8, leaving the argentinians with no chance to get to the finals of the conference.

B.Aires Tangueros 1 – 0 Arizona Night Lizards
“Kalessin’s been having a luck of his own”, declared coach Licker before the conference finals, and he had it right. Arizona suffered that fortune in a close match that was eventually decided by the continuous injuries and ko’s that plagued the lizardmen team. Coach Roadtoad performed exceptionally well this season, having entered the league in the preseason, with not even a single training camp match, and leading the conference in the regular 14 rounds of competition. But their path ended abruptly here.

Tangueros entered the field missing their main hitter and their sweeper, and even before they grabbed the ball, a rock viciously thrown from the grades stunned a marauder. A misjudgement put them in peril, as their mino failed a dodge after surfing an opponent. Arizona retaliated moving forward and fouling the already-fallen-thanks-to-a-rock-marauder. By turn 2, pacters’ team was in disarray and facing heavy pressure from the Night Lizards. Strangely enough, lizards never blitzed the marauders guarding the ballcarrying elf and allowed the argentinian dancers to regain their feet. Meanwhile, minotaur’s piles on didn’t seem to work, and the clock forced the renegade elf to move forward, only to find himself surrounded by scaly-ones. Arizona then forced an opening and blitzed the ball free and grabbed it on turn 6, threatening a score of their own, but an unfortunate dodge allowed –once again– Tangueros to regain their breath. But it would be a short respite for them: a new misstep ended with the ball on the ground. With two turns to go, Night Lizards run for the touch down zone. Only one thing stood between skink Pleistodon Obsoletus and victory: a concatenation of miracles. And they came: a lightning bolt put him down, and a marauder marked the ball. Obsoletus did manage to pow him backwards, but failed the subsequent pick up. Half ended with no score and Roadtoad regretting not going for it on turn 7.

Still, for second half Lizards had possession. Two of their sauri remained out of the pitch, but there were plenty skinks to assault the pacters. Tangueros prayed to a god of their own, Pugliese, to save their honor. Arizona sent two skinks deep into Tangueros’ field, hoping to quickly overrun their opponents. They would have succeded, but then Gardelito’s hits started to bear fruits, seriously injuring one of those skinks. The other ended heavily marked. When on the following turn lizards couldn’t find a pow until their last block, and their next skink tripped to stun himself, defense got stronger. Tangueros firepower quickly came in: minotaur knocked out another skink and a rookie marauder utterly killed a stronger, more developed saurus. Options grew shorter by the second for lizardmen, specially after their kroxigor went dumb. Still they run with the ball, hoping that lack of tackle in Kalessin’s players would allow them just one turn of safety to score. It wasn’t to be: Tangueros freed the ball immediately after and fouled another skink out of the field. A quick turnover put lizardmen in even direr position, as B.Aires started a drill they knew well, securing the ball and advancing positions. Being a coach with lizardmen experience of his own, Kalessin pushed his players towards the remaining skinks. Tangueros secured the victory on the last move and qualified to the first final match of their history.

Final
White Rock Midnight 2 – 0 B.Aires Tangueros

Even if this wasn’t as easy a match as their previous encounter, White Rock met little resistance from B.Aires. Dark elves armour held better than that of their opponents and took advantage of their agility and better training. There’s no argument: the best team (and coach) won the match and the conference title. Tangueros’ early perfect defense gave them some hope, but –undeterred by the rain– Midnight managed to open their lines. Even if they landed a blow to an advancing witch and set up a decent scrum, lack of tackle diminished pacter’s threat to the elven dominion, as midnighters continued to slip from their grasp. Better positioning and century-old elven patience ultimately did the rest. A wizard might have helped the pacters, but his feeble lightning did nothing to the Jef “Stormborn” McDowel, that washed it off under the rain. Four players under by turn 5, Tangueros seemed helpless against White Rock. But Licker then missed a spot and the skaven sweeper found a spot to put McDowel down. He would pay it dearly, with his own skin shortly after. Midnight recovered the ball and hide upfield. Once again, a renegade pacter (Piazzolla the elf, himself!) would put down the ballcarrier. But fortune wasn’t with Tangueros this match. Dark elves managed to pick it up once more and finally score, with no further threat to their dominion, on turn 7. B.Aires lacked the tools to score in two turns, and tried to make as much harm as possible to have a chance on the following half, but that wouldn’t help either.

Second half started with pacters already outmanned and clinging desperately to the hope of a miracle that never came: minotaur did no harm, their own elf couldn’t hold the ball enough time and they simply lacked the manpower to keep their opponents at bay or advance without putting the possession in peril. Then immediately after a riot elves knocked out two marauders, thing were over. Ball was free quickly enough, and getting deeper into elven tacklezones with each bounce. Each turn then became an effort to retain the possession, taking small steps backwards, rather than forward. Tangueros fought the best they could, but were eventually surpassed on turn 5 by their opponents. Coach Licker ordered his players to leave nothing to chance, and they proceeded to cut every possible flank of attack from the pacters. Things ended quickly after that, Tangueros knowing the game lost and the dream of a Superior Bowl match gone.

Once again, White Rock Midnight proved a superior team and deserved the conference title. Now it’s up to them and the also elven team Caudillos to decide if they’ll retain the NWFL championship trophy.

Last Western ReSport! Thank you all guys for taking the time to read this. Hope you have enjoyed it as much as I did doing the write ups for this season!

**

Western ReSport – Superior Bowl, Superior ReSport

NWFL’s eleventh season has come to an end with a thrilling match between defending champion White Rock Midnight and the always ascending Argentinian Caudillos. And for the first time since the league begun, the Superior Bowl has been claimed by a South-American team!

Coach Licker surpassed other three argentinian colleagues from the Auld World before getting to the finals, while coach Emanukio had to stand the beating in the mostly bashy play-offs of the New World Conference. In the end dice helped one over the other.

White Rock Midnight 1 - 4 Argentinian Caudillos
Dark elves started with the possession, stunning two opponents, grabbing the ball and caging. Their brighter counterparts reacted by knocking out two cousins, one by fouling! Caudillos pressured and screened close to their opponents, hoping for an opening while insisting on the fouling tactic. A K.O. of their own gave hopes to the defending champions, but skull over and again soon ended their turn. Elves redoubled their pressure and forced some dodged on their opponents, forcing some daring play from White Rock, that felt the need to score a bit earlier than they might have wanted. Thus, by turn 5, dark elves were winning 1-0.

Second drive would start with good news for midnighters: some quick reaction allowed them a blitz on the argentinians. Unfortunately for them, they had to spend their last re-roll and couldn’t get close to the ball before tripping to the ground. Caudillos reacted moving the ball to the flank that White Rock neglected to take a shot at the ball in the previous blitz. Without taking unnecessary risks, argentinians scored on turn 6. And it would prove a good decision, as they managed to maintain superior numbers from the ko-box rolls.

In their own run to a second touchdown, Aaroon Thude find that it wasn’t his match. After taking advantage of every other argentinian team in the play-offs, he consistently failed dodged and leaps against Caudillos. Emanukio’s players, in turn, swarmed forward to prevent dark elves from getting the ball. They wrestled down their closest opponent and fouled to stun Thude, even though he wasn’t in scoring range. Things got desperate for Midnight in the last turn of the half, as they punched their way to the ball and tried a long pass that Loli Popper couldn’t catch. In their own attempt, Caudillos succeeded: they cleansed the ball’s path to the score and Chacho Peñaloza secured the lead. 2-1 for the argentinians before going back to their coaches pep’talks.

Second half Emanukio asked his players no-nonsense, and they kept true to that. Once again they fouled an opponent out of the field, protected the ball and moved forward threatening a quick score. Indeed, they got to the endzone in the second turn of the half and extended their lead 3-1, while rookie dark elf blitzer Nayor stayed out of the pitch.

Crowd rested uneasy with that result. Dark elves fans felt cheated, while argentinians felt no need to prolong the match. They crossed some verbal finesse in old tongues and insult ended in a riot that forced the referee to move the clock forward, lessening Licker’s chances to retain his crown. But his elves didn’t surrender and once again moved forward, while Caudillos set up a screen to slow them down. Midnighters couldn’t bear to try the risky scrum and argentinians took advantage from their lack of self confidence. Caudillos pressed forward and when dark elves finally decided to run for it, their hands seemed shaky from the responsibility and Thude once again failed an important play for his team, dropping an easy ball. Caudillos did pick it up and the match was decided. Only thing left to see was a new run to the score by the argentinians. It came in their last turn.
Thus, coach Emanukio became the new Superior Bowl champion of the league.

The road ahead
Some are calling this result a “change of guard”. Still, some of the league’s old steady performers have shown resilience. White Rock got to the Superior Bowl, and some others like Butte Kickers, Green Back Smackers and Joplin Disasters got there too. Season 11 has seen the retirement of some other teams, like the dreaded Winchester Wicked Wrongdoers chaos dwarfs. So it seems only natural that some newer teams rose to fill those spots.

With TV cuts mandatory in the next few weeks, right before preseason starts, some culling is to be done by last play-off contenders. Will that suffice for less developed teams to par their ante? It will be seen in a few weeks.

Until then, enjoy your off-season and thank you all for following this exciting league here, in Western ReSport!
