Start with the 145 Club. After you learn what you can there, ask again, but in 145 Discord. There are tutors there, and the community functions as a vetting service of sorts.

And it's FREE.

Definitely. Even people who charge for coaching will tell you to start with all the free stuff, give that plenty of time (and games) to sink in, and then when that stops working, find more free stuff. Then, when you run out of free stuff ... go back to the best free stuff. Then, when that stops adding value, paying for stuff is a reasonable option.

But if you join the 145, there's a mentoring program. There are also a lot of people who will give you time and energy. There's also a lot of published advice to read. Like, a ton. The 145 will direct you to some of that, and 145 coaches will direct you to others. You can read the Thousand Losses Playbook: it's dense, strange in format, and a little out of date, but it's wonderful as an example of what someone could do.

I'm 214 losses shy, and I'm working on my book. But I must confess that I'm going to push hard to make that as many games as possible, so you might have a wait. My thinking is very different to Wreckage's: I did draft him a championship DLE team once (back in its heady early days), and I had to take players I myself wouldn't have wanted. However, that's another thing. This game is new enough that you can just pick a couple coaches who do what you want to do, only better, and watch them. See what they do in common, and what they do differently. Then add more coaches of the same style.

You can evaluate coaches in a lot of ways, but the ones I think are most significant:

1) pick the best coaches for the rosters you want to study. It doesn't have to be the very top coaches: it's best if they're better than you, but not by so much you can't relate, you know?

2) Pick them because their stats are like the ones you'd like to evolve into, but not just wins and casualties. Look at your blocking, rushing, and passing differentials as ratios and per-game deltas. Imagine that if you were playing the kind of BB you actually wanted, which of those stats would actually matter, and see who above you (in your range) does about what you want. Those are the coaches whose replays you want to study.

3) You want to do the same for higher-ranked coaches, but it's better there to be discriminating in terms of what you're seeing in what quantity. If certain philosophies that you're seeing among Super-Stars start disappearing in the top ten or fifteen coaches in a given roster, that might mean they're holdover concepts or other types of tempting dead ends.

I generally recommend new players start with the free resources, because most people aren't invested enough in the game yet to want to spend money on coaching. But if you are invested and can afford it, I think paying for good coaching is a much quicker route — time has value too. I've coached complete beginners as well as experienced players, and had one new player voluntarily pay me extra afterwards because he was so happy with what he'd got out of it.

Definitely, paid coaching can get you a huge leg up quickly. I've had coaches struggle, take lessons, and get immediately better, and I can't imagine but that it'd be even more dramatic if they were actually new. It's cost-inefficient compared to what's free, but yes, a good paid coach can make a huge damn difference, no matter your skill level (as long as it's not above the coach).

I still think starting with the Taouch and 1KL and my defense guide and even Ian Williams' old "Hit 'em Hard and Hit 'em Often" article (dated but still valid) are good places to get a common framework that can save you some paid lessons. That's not an argument against paid lessons.

This thread got interesting to me, as well as containing good advice.

First there is an area here that triggers me. We talk of 'coaching' and really its t least two things.

Teaching and Coaching.

A Teacher teaches you how to do something,
A Coach coaches you to do it better and improve your performance at it.

When learning BB i would advocate using as much of the free resources, especially the 145 club, as possible. Unless you learn best by someone teaching you the basics, its far better to learn them yourself at your pace so they sink in.

Moving from the basics to competent is also teaching, its about turn order, shapes, drive structure etc. all the things that take you from knowing how to play using the rules to playing decently competent blood bowl.

This is where coaching comes into its own, in my opinion. How do you move beyond competent? Here i feel an outside eye, some experience, some mindset adjustment and strategic thinking become key.

All of that needs to again be caveated with your own (ideally) knowledge of how you learn best. But before deciding a 'coach' is the answer, or a teacher, i back everyone else's suggestions.
Places to learn BB and/or improve your BB:
Reading and understanding the rulebook.
The 145 club on FUMBBL.
The many websites on Blood Bowl Tactics.
The 1000 losses playbook (old but gold) and other fan made guides.
YouTubes of better players that communicate well.(tastes vary)
Twitch Streams of better BB3 and FUMBBL players.
FUMBBL replays.
Your local Table Top league/Tournament scene.
Paid coaching.

So, welcome to Blood Bowl. there is a lot of help out there, and most of it free.

There is of course a place for paid coaching and teaching, some find more value in things they pay for, find they concentrate more. Some need the pupil teacher dynamic, or a mentor, or friend. Some need that outside guiding eye. Or find it accelerates progress, and many other good reasons.

It just isn't the only choice, and not one even paid coaches often recommend to new players.

Also, when it comes to a coach or teacher, it's like streamers in that not everyone is a good fit. My philosophy doesn't really apply to stunty BB at all (except in Stunty Leeg, where it's viable but still not amazing), and presumes what I thought were simple arithmetic skills that, as it turns out, not everyone has, or even has the context for. (This surprised the hell out of me when I started tutoring. And yes, PC, I said tutoring: I'm neither a coach nor a teacher, but parallel to both.)
