CBBS Special Report: Season 11 Preview

It is yet again time for another great NCBB season, but this time things could be quite different. First and foremost, we are now using the FFB client and thus the new rulebook. Journeymen, inducements, wrastle, automove...these are the things that coaches much adjust to in their quest for bowl games. Last season, we saw Oregon rise out of a lack-luster Smack 6 to face Hawaii, who emerged by the gauntlet that is the Big Beast conference. These two elven teams played a masterful defense contest, but eventually Hawaii came out on top with the national championship trophy in hand.

Overall Picture
The past few years, the Beast has been a gauntlet for its members, leaving few without at least one loss through conference play (not to mention crushing the Smack in OoC play.) The Smack has been a one-team show, as Oregon has walked through conference play with little challenge. That should change with the return of Clemson (who played Oregon in the season 9 title game,) and the promotion of Yale (who won the Fiesta bowl vs Minni,) from the NonAQ. Combine the new additions with the presumed improvement from the rest of the Smack, and Oregon certainly won't have the same cakewalk that they previously had.

Pre-Season Poll
Here is the first look at the new season as brought to you by the CBBS:

1. Hawaii University: the defending champs return most of their team and have 14 players to bring some depth to the squad. They lost a massive contributor to their team in the St4 Ag5 blodging Jeramy Bryant, but still have the Banger-Hardell winner in Malcome Lane. Thus Hawaii should have no problem scoring points this season, but their defense (which was the key to their championship,) will be tested each and every week.

2. BlackKnights: the reigning Rose Bowl victors look to have all the pieces to reach the championship this year. They even played the first game of the NCBB season today, winning 4-1 vs Vandy (though one of their two St4 players died.) With so many skilled players returning (eight players with two or more skills,) only currently having questionable depth (12 players,) might slow them down.

3. Clemson Terrors: some of you might have forgotten about these guys, but rest assured, they have been brooding during their time off and are ready to make their mark once again. Although they lost two great four-skill Mummies, Clemson returns a core of solid players based around two three-skilled ghouls and one triple-skilled Wight. Throw in a ton of helpful zombies, and the Terrors will likely be a nightmare for their opponents once again.

4. PainState: coming off their Orange bowl victory over Nibraskah, PainState seems to have finally built back up near their level when they won the season 8 national championship. They lost a whopping eight players to graduation after their victory, and its taken two seasons to re-skill the team. Yet they were very, very competitive during those two seasons, and now they look to enforce their smash-mouth style on the league once again.

5. Oregon Waterfoul: we're probably crazy for ranking them #5 to start the season, but Oregon lost a ton of quality players from last year's title-appearance team. Losing a St4 frenzied blodger that was the key to their team will certainly hurt, but a closer look reveals a very solid nucleus. With five blodgers and four players a score or less from skilling up, there is again a ton of potential for the Waterfoul.

6. Yale Bulldogs: although anything short of a #1 preseason ranking will cause the team to feel slighted, this squad is very young but they show a lot of promise. With their Fiesta bowl victory, Yale showed that they can compete with the big schools, and now they'll get a chance to truly prove it in the Smack 6 conference. With a solid blitzing corps and a potential superstar in Heart Doctor, the Bulldogs will take on the world and look to emerge victorious.

7. University of Nevada Wolfpack: had a rough break in their "builder" last season when their uber-player Wolfman Jack fell to the dreaded turf-monster. But the team fought through adversity and still had a decent season, getting to the Wonderbra bowl. With the experienced gained from last year, Nevada is now poised to have a breakout campaign thanks to another St4 wolf and very solid (yet still underrated,) quarterback.

8. Buffalo BullCentaurs: for perhaps the first time in a long time, Buffalo enters a season healthy. The team hasn't been the same since their bowl loss in season 6 and opener vs Minni in season 7 that decimated their teams. Add in a game or two each succeeding season where a bullcentaur got injured, and it's been a long time since Buffalo looked read to challenge for a top bowl once again. But perhaps that time is upon us, with two promising bulls and a very solid core of blockers to lead the way.

9. Ohio State Drunkguys: this team replaces a dangerous Minni squad with one perhaps just as dangerous. The blitzing corps is going to be deadly, with one St4 player and two POMB jerks. Deprived of a bowl game last year, this team is probably licking its chops to get back on the field and prove themselves. Watch out for this team, as they could easily sit much higher in the final rankings than in their preseason spot.

10. California Golden Lizards: this is probably the strangest team in the league, as they find a way to win games (five victories in each of the past four seasons,) yet cannot win a bowl game to save their lives (six straight bowl defeats.) With a solid core of developed saurri and skinks, Cal is a haunted team looking to redeem themselves for post-season failures (where have I heard that before...)

11. Torxas State Bobkats: a high value and very solid team, but Torxas has yet to bring it all together and really take the next step. But perhaps that is changing, with the Bobkats winning a very tough bowl game vs Michigan thanks to their uber-blitzer. The team will likely go as far as he takes them, but a larger focus on defense will carry Torxas to new heights.

12. U.Con. Huskies: struggled to a decent four-win season though they capped it off with a bowl victory, the Huskies yern to get back to the glory days of their season 7 national championship. But it could be a long road for UCon, given their super-young roster. Still, they have a lot of potential and room to grow, and it's never smart to sleep on an animal that has claws...

13. Nibraskah Wanabees: still are a very talented team but you simply cannot understate the impact that the two-time Hammer winner in Herger had on both Nibraskah and opposing teams. With Herger's graduation to the pros (where he now stars on the Stealers, yet still coaches his college program,) the Wanabees will have to find a way to fill his defensive impact on the game. Although they still have some pieces, rats are always susceptible to injuries and having four nigglers is just asking for trouble. Unless they grow some more super-rats ASAP, it will be tough for Nibraskah to adapt to life without having Herger on the field.

14. Vampirebilt Commonthralls: although we hate to rank a great coach like Somertown so low...we simply can't avoid putting Vandy here. With four combined wins in the last three seasons and half the team having no skills...I hope Somer can shock the college football world.

NonAQ Preview
We have ten new programs with three brand-new coaches in the NonAQ division, so the group should be very exciting. We have two Chaos Pact teams, a goblin and underworld team, two elven teams, a skaven and slann team, flings and humans; with so much variety in the conference, it will be interesting to see who emerges from the group. Smart money would be on Azure's woodelves, who came out with two wardancers that will likely be nightmares for the new programs to deal with.

Out-of-Conference Preview
Once again we have three weeks out Out-of-Conference play to begin our season for the BCS teams, and as always we have several great matchups for the fans to enjoy. Here are some of the key games early in the season:

Week 1
-Ohio State vs Oregon: what better way to prove yourself as a program than to try and knock off an NCBB powerhouse in your season opener? Oregon is probably as vulnerable as it will ever be this season, but can Ohio State take advantage of this opportunity, or will the big stage affect their play?

Week 2
-PainState vs Clemson: these two smashmouth teams met in the season 7 Fiesta bowl where Clemson emerged victorious. Despite the loss, PainState rebounded next season by capturing the national championship, while Clemson went to the big game the year after. Thus you can expect a hard-hitting, well-coached contest when these two programs meet on the field once again.

Week 3
-BlackKnights vs Oregon: this should be a very entertaining game between two eleven teams that could easily be beat up or perhaps even grow stronger during their first two OoC games. But any time last year's Rose Bowl champion and title runner-up meet on the field, the rest of the league is sure to take notice. One can hope that both teams simply destroy each other somehow, but either way, this should be a very entertaining game.

Season Predictions
Last season we were remarkably hit-and-miss in our predictions, putting Hawaii in the goober bowl but correctly forecasting Oregon in the title game, Herger as a two-time hammer recipient, and Wolfman Jack as the Wylie winner. Clearly we can improve in our bowl picks...

BCS National Championship: Clemson vs Hawaii
Rose Bowl: PainState vs Oregon
Orange Bowl: BlackKnights vs Yale
Fiesta Bowl: Cal vs Nevada
Killer Lite Bowl: Tlaxcua vs Ohio State
Wonderbra Bowl: Buffalo vs Nibraskah
Goober Bowl: UCon vs Michigan State
McNurgles Bowl: Vandy vs Torxas

Hammer: Shane "Fragging" Jones, BlackKnights
Banger-Hardell: Malcom Lane, Hawaii
Neeley: Werewolf of London II, Nevada
Wylie: Heart Doctor, Yale
SOMUFTEN: Nomad
Gabbert-Bryant: Bryant Moniz, Hawaii
Wolfman: Davey O'mecihuatl, Tlaxcua

So there you have it folks! Season 11 looks to be yet another great one, and we have some early matchups that you surely won't want to miss. The NonAQ group shows some promise as well, and our predictions this year are sure to be spot-on. Best of luck to everyone in the upcoming season!

Davey O'Mecihuatl is honored by the Wolfman prediction, and hopes he can live up to pre-season expectations.

Xochimilco "Mr. Cowboy" Ixtlilxochitl wishes the best for his teammate, but firmly believes that he too will be in the Rookie of the Year discussion by the time things start wrapping up.

The other two catchers are just biding their time... paying attention to those Wardancers, but biding their time.

Davey may get the wylie too Smile

And ye of little faith. UCon had less losses than most teams last year and are ranked behind a bunch of teams they regularly defeat. Be ready for the Huskies to return to the top of the pecking order.

I honestly think that, even if things work out ideally for the team, the catchers are going to split the offense too evenly for any of them to be considered for individual honors.

And not to dwell on unfortunate truths, but the catchers aren't exactly guaranteed to finish the season intact, even in a non-AQ division dominated by rookie squads and light on bashers.

Easiest win ever!

Ohio State Drunkguys 2 - 1 Yale Bulldogs

Someone forgot to tell Yale that THE Ohio State Drunkguys are future professional BloodBowl players. While we were resting and getting ready for the game by sitting in the hot tub and picking out the color scheme for our next sleeve of tattoos, these guys were (shudder...) STUDYING.

HAha... suckers. We got girls to do that stuff for us. Even awesomer is that they're graduated already, with no jobs... and they're easy. What beats unemployed college grad townies that take our classes for us in exchange for sexual favors that we video and sell rights to on the internet?!? Not an education at friggin' Yale, I'll tell you that! Yale has a lot to learn about college football - and they may just do it if they ever get their noses out of those books with hardly any pictures...

CBBS Special Report: Week 4 Update

Welcome, college football fans! We're three weeks into yet another great NCBB season and it's time to catch everyone up on what happened during Out-of-Conference play, and then preview what is coming up during Conference play. So without further delay, let's get started!

Out-of-Conference Review
-Things started off with a bang in week 1 when defending national champion Hawaii fell 1-2 to a rebuilt Buffalo squad. Another favored Beast team was upset as well, when UCon won 2-0 over PainState. Finally, we saw Oregon managed to survive an upset bid by Ohio State with a 1-1 tie.
-Week 2 saw another upset by Buffalo, as they won 2-0 over the then-newly RFA ranked #1 BlackKnights. Oregon got back on the winning track by crushing Cal 2-0.
-Week 3 was big as well, especially when two eleven powers clashed in a 2-1 win for Oregon over the BlackKnights. A huge upset occured when Nibraskah knocked off Buffalo with a 2-1 victory, despite getting out-blocked 14 to 53.

Conference Preview
-In previous seasons, the Big Beast conference took the Smack 6 out to the woodshed and beat them silly. Things were more even this year, but the Beast still won with an 11:6 edge (along with 4 ties.) The biggest difference in the two conferences was the three Smack teams that went O-fer (aka winless.) But the emergence of Buffalo as a top contender for the Smack crown is certainly exciting for those who were hoping for more parity in that conference (aka someone beating Oregon.)
-Sticking in the Smack, we have an epic round 1 matchup between the top two teams in the conference: (2-1-0) Oregon vs (2-0-1) Buffalo. It'll be a rematch of the season 7 Rose Bowl where the Waterfoul crushed the BullCentaurs, which send them on a downward spiral from several seasons. But it appears that Buffalo could be back, with two upsets of then-ranked #1 teams before falling themselves in week 3. However, if they truly want to get back to their Rose Bowl form, then a victory over Oregon is a must.
-Switching the to beloved Big Beast conference, it appears we have a surprise leader atop the standings going into week 4. The Nevada Wolfpack and their 2-1-0 record currently lead the Beast, but PainState and Ohio State plan to knock them off during the next two weeks. Likewise, the preseason #1 team known as Hawaii University, have a tough two weeks ahead of them. First they the battle once-ranked #1 BlackKnights before facing 2-0-1 Nibraskah the round after.

NonAQ Analysis
-Everyone loves noobs, but everyone hates noobs that actually do well. Thus Georgia, Michigan State, and Akron are public enemy #1 with the seven other teams chasing them. Georgia and Mich State battled to a tie in week 1, though both are undefeated since. But neither have played Akron yet, which faces Georgia in week 6 and Mich State in the season finale. Will another team or two rise up to challenge these teams for NonAQ supremacy?

It's too early to look into stats by either teams or individuals, but rest assured we will next time out. Until then, enjoy the games and best of luck to everyone!

CBBS Special Report: Week 7 Review

It's been a while since we last caught everyone up with events in college football, so long that we need to catch up ourselves. A lot has happened in the past three weeks, yet so much more is going to happen in the next month. With so much to cover, we better get started!

Playing Catch-up
-When we last reported, conference play was just starting up. Three rounds of games later, and things look very, very different. The most shocking result was the 4-1 blowout of defending national champion Hawaii by the BlackKnights, which occured in week 4. In the same week, the Smack conference saw their top two teams clash in a 2-0 win for Oregon over Buffalo. We don't want to kick a team while they're down, but a 4-0 blowout of Hawaii by Nibraskah in week 5 was another shocking result. In back to back games, the defending champs were flabbergasted by a 1:8 margin. In the next week, the aforementioned Wanabees finally defeated their arc-nemesis, PainState and their orcy ways, with a 2-1 victory.

Conference Analysis
-With four rounds left before bowl season, there is still so much that can happen. Right now Nibraskah is leading the Beast at a 4-0-1 record, but they have four tough games remaining. A gauntlet of Nevada, Ohio State, the BlackKnights, and finally Cal certainly won't be easy. All four teams are currently (at the time of posting,) in spots 2 through 5 in the Beast, and thus each will be chomping at the bit to overtake the ironically-named Wanabees. Sadly, conference realignment in the offseason has done little to balance the Smack conference, as Oregon sits atop the group with a 5-1-0 record. The two teams below them (Clemson and Buffalo,) currently have two wins each, while the next four have three combined wins. The Waterfoul's next two games (after a bye in round 4,) are vs well-coached teams in Clemson and Yale. Another championship appearance seems to be in the making for Oregon but stranger things have happened in blood bowl.

NonAQ Review
-The newbies are playing through their season pretty quickly, and they only have about two and a half rounds to go. Three teams have separated themselves, as Michigan State (5-1-0), Akron (5-1-1), and Georgia (5-1-1) are out in front of the conference. It's unlikely that bowl bids will be given to any other team (as no others are above two wins,) but perhaps 5 wins will be enough if the Smack teams continue to falter. As for who will finish first overall of the "little three," it will fortunately come down to the final week when Michigan State and Akron face off. The Spartans and Bulldogs played to a 1:1 tie, back in week 1, while Akron ran circles around Georgia in a 3-2 contest, though it should have easily been 4:1. Thus week 10 will determine who will get the top NonAQ bowl bid (perhaps the Rose or Fiesta bowl,) so we can't wait for that contest.

Well that should wrap things up for this report. We promised some stats but ran out of time, so perhaps we can get a mini-report done later. Best of luck to everyone in their games, and we'll see you again in a few weeks to preview bowl season!

Well, we can't do better than 4-4-1 this season. Nonetheless, Tlaxcua is happy about the team's general performance, despite some luck issues earlier in the season, and believes that had a few things broken differently for us, we would be right there in the race. Oh well -- next year!
