Seven cycles were completed in week #5!
Folsom Prison Blues and Darth Elfs, Dark Elves, were joined by Glory Daze and Hawkheim Harlequins, Pro Elves, in pulling off this great feat for their respective races. And finally, Synnful Sprinting Spirits, Beginging, and woodland fawns all earn a seat in the Order of the Ash – awarded to any Wood Elf teams completing the cycle in this Season XV. Congrats! E.L.F. Season XV Snapshot Standings.

Recruitment still open only to fresh TR100 elf teams. Experienced teams will have to wait until after the season to join. Only 5 days of play left in this season which will end promptly at Midnight on January 14th!

Image

99 active teams in the ninth and final full-week of play in Season XV with 33 of them Wood Elves.

Synnful Sprinting Spirits maintains its 1st place position for the Wood Elves adding a couple points to reach 571 – the highest score ever recorded in the E.L.F! Glory Daze makes a triumphant comeback and has dashed into 2nd place with 471 points for the Pro Elves. Blissfully Intrepid falls back into 3rd place for the Wood Elves.

Phasers Set To Fabulous remain the highest scoring Dark Elf team in 10th place with 387 points. And the highest scoring High Elf team, Filipinas, holds at 371 points and 13th place in the overall standings.

One team in the 500’s, 7 in the 400’s, 14 teams with scores in the 300’s, 19 more are above 200 and another 21 have now made it past the century mark.

Blissfully Intrepid holds onto category C. Synnful Sprinting Spirits owns the other four categories. Again very little movement and these two teams hold claim to all five of the categories for the Wood Elves.

Philosophers Rocking Chair, Faction High Elves, complete the cycle in week #9. In addition two teams, Qvickfote Ballpassers andWeapons, earn a seat in the Order of the Ash – awarded to any Wood Elf teams completing the cycle in this Season XV. Time is running out so get your cycles finished!

Bear with me people, this is going to be a long post…

First up, I’d like to tank pizzamogul and everyone else involved in ELF for running a great group, I’m happy to have been part of it, if only for a short while. Also, congratz to the top teams in season XV, you have played excellent BB and deserve the awards.

Right, on to business: For me, ELF does not fulfil its design purpose. I’ll explain why and hopefully start a discussion to make it better. Like I said, I’ve only been part of ELF for a short time (one season), and ELF has been successful for a long time, so it might be that this topic has already been discussed in the group. It might also be that the problem is all in my head, in that case the more experienced ELF coaches can surely make me se reason. Sorry in advance if I step on anybody’s toes. As things stand, my first season leaves me dissatisfied enough that I probably won’t participate in any more seasons. Sad

I joined ELF with a brand new WE team in season XV with the purpose of playing competitive matches against all races. I’m a competitive guy, I like to win, so I checked out the scoring system (this is important, because if you don’t care about winning you will think I have no point). I set to work collecting ELF points and all was good so far. However…

It quickly dawned on me that the scoring system actually provides disincentives to playing competitive matches. To have any chance of taking home one of the awards in season XV, let alone the ELF trophy, you have to win almost every match 5-0. This is because of the bonus points for 5 TD and for 0 TD against. Now, a 5-0 result is in my mind indicative of a not-very-balanced match-up. Sometimes you get 5-0 even against an opponent with similar TS and CR, but mostly not. The scoring system works against the purpose of the group (playing competitive matches) by providing incentives to cherry-picking.

Looking at the top teams in season XV (again, you played good BB and deserve the awards), you see some matches of this kind. For example, one of the top teams has an 8-0 victory against famous chaos team Khorne’s Scorn. Now, no ill will towards that team or its coach, but it’s a poster child of a non-competitive opponent. By taking random first skills and having a reputation for ignoring the ball when they’re losing, the team has racked up a nice losing record and the coach a low CR. This is not the kind of opponent I envisioned for my ELF team and I myself would never play them, but by choosing not to play that kind of opponent, I also lose the chance to win the ELF trophy! I will never get an 8-0 victory, simply because I don’t play that kind of match-ups.

So, given that I have no chance to compete for the ELF trophy by playing according to what in my mind is the ELF spirit, I will probably not take part in any more seasons.

What can be done about this? Does anything need to be done? Just to get the discussion started, I’ll make a suggestion, but I’m sure there are better solutions and I have no idea if my suggestion is even workable within the automated scoring program.

Suggestion: Award 5 bonus points for any match against a team with higher TS than yours and don’t count matches against teams with TS >20 lower than yours.

(Personally, I’d add “no points for matches against coaches with CR <150”, but that’s probably just me.)

If you don’t want to mess with the scoring system, perhaps a new “extra” could be created, akin to the Synnful Sprint? How about the MadTrial, awarded to a team that completes an ELF season without playing any opponent with a lower TS than yours?

Let’s hear what people think. Pizzamogul, you currently run the show, so I’d appreciate your input especially. Question

I like the idea - and for the few seasons I've played in ELF (some of them long ago) I've never gone hunting for particularly favorable matchups. With regards to CR, I think that could be worked in like this: don't count matches if the opposing coach's CR is more than 5 (or some other arbitrary value) below your own, and maybe have some maximum threshhold (155, perhaps) so that high rated coaches can still score. I agree that it's weak to count the matches against the weakest coaches as worth the most (given that they're easier to score against, prevent from scoring, and hurt).

This is something I have written to pizzamogul a long time ago in a pm.
The sad thing is that only those games will get reported that are played vs low CR coaches. This is more so true for games vs brutal teams.
It is not a fact that ELF teams only play vs low CR bashy teams, it is only a fact that these yield the most points.
I did suggest a modification of ELF points based (only) on the opponents CR. Only with this we might see a 1:1 vs a 170 CR Dwarf coach being reported (and counted for overall points) instead of the 5:0 win vs that 143 CR coach.

I would not take into considerations the ELF coachs CR. Because winning vs a 140 CR coach is easier than winning vs a 170 CR coach, both for a 140 CR coach and a 170 CR coach. As I have said, it is a long time ago, but if I remember it correctly I suggested to modify the ELF score by a value for every 5 points of CR starting from 150 (like -x points for games vs 145-149.99 CR, or + 3times x points for games vs 165-169.99 CR coach; maybe x =5?, so -5, +15 for the examples)

Something has to be done in my oppinnion. Because it always makes me sad to see the games that are reported. This is not the meaning of the ELF.

EDIT: I also think that it should be easily coded into the program that makes the scoring, after all the CR is now part of the match reprot.

I personally hate the idea of giving more credence to CR considering where is the line drawn?

Some of us don't find games particularly easy to find. What happens to a 175 CR coach? Is that person not allowed to count games unless they play 170+ coaches (half of them are pickers anyway)?

People are making way too big a deal about CR and not enough of a big deal about TS.

If we want to truly go nuts, how about making an ELF "Premier Division" where the only matches that can be reported are games in a SMACK, major or SFC?

I've also written about this once, quite long ago, and it's the main reason for me playing few games with elves lately.

I think the incentive on higher TS opponents is a good idea, like the lower limit for TS.

The CR thing has more problems. I like Arkon's aproach (I've thougth about it and reached similar conclusions). Give some incentive in points the higher the CR of your opponents.
(Synn is rigth, CR is not that important, you can still make good points by picking on cherripickers, that are somewhat easier, but sowing their defeats in ELF reporting threads will not hurt Twisted Evil )

...intead of divisions, may be extra points also for tournament play?
If it's hard to keep track of it, maybe we could use the Repoting thread for this. That would be better publicity than reporting lame matches against underpowered teams.

How many points and how exactly to give them is a matter of tinkering with the sistem (they should weigth enougth to make it a good deal to take on conpetitive matches)

When i joined ELF i dreamed of winning a Category but quickly realised what was required and was not willing to go there.
There already is a bonus for tournament play maybe it should increased to 15pts

I agree with Synn TS is more important than CR. It is the measure of your teams strength vs opponents and as such the TS bonus should much higher than CR. I think out coaching my opponent is far more better than out teaming them.
I think a TS -10 limit should be set.

I like the incentive for playing higher CR's suggested by archon. but my bonuses would
150-159 5pts
160-169 10pts
170-179 15pts
180+ 20pts

I think that CR is the one to go for because:
-it is the one and only ranking we have
-teams are more dangerous in high CR coaches (this goes for bashing, fouling and the outcome of the game)

TS is not good because:
-it is flawed for some teams
-it limits the choice of opponents
-there is a 40TS rule already
-especially at higer TR there is a difference between TR/TS (variing for different teams). This means that you play with handicaps and we all know that while some handicaps hardly influence the game some do massively. This means in effect that you could be same TS on the paper but if your best player claims IT WASN'T ME you play with a much weaker team

Synn, to avoid this I think the ELF coaches CR shall not be looked at, only the opponents CR. That determines the difficulty to win and the possible danger a bashy team is. (Of course there are exceptions like the before mentioned Khorne’s Scorn and its coach)

True but certain teams are consistantly playing at -20-30 TS and this should be cut out and playing against the odds encouraged
CR is equally heavily flawed as well.

As to limiting opponents we could exempt vampires, ogres and the stunties. As these teams are hard to get equal tr/ts games with and quite a lot of dont like to play with handicaps.

I've been in this group for a long time now. I joined with the old format because I liked the group idea and my teams were allready playing that way (never intended to win).

After a couple of seasons, it became clear to me that the group was not very active (or appealing for new coaches). The main reason was that the competition was a matter of quantity of matches played and thus, only 2-3 coaches, able to play over 30 matches were on top (and even they couldn't keep a tight score).

Then I posted this and with the ideas of much wiser coaches than me, the format changed. With the change, the group has grown a lot.

Nowadays I can see again similar problems (and some new ones).
To be on the top, you need either to play many matches and have some lucky ones or cherripick (and that's a worse problem).
The group is still appealing thanks to pizzamogul's work and the little prices for Cathegories and Elven Races, so it remains active.

But the point of the group, competitive elves playing tough matches, is somehow lost (not completly, but in a way).
My forum signature "Proud member of the ELF" means that my teams belong to this group because of pride, "I play better than cherripickers and elfballers", not just that I'm proud of being in the group (I am, I still am).

I think that the sujestions above can help a lot:
give points for tournament play
give points for playing higher TS teams (and probably put a penalty for playing lower TS tams)
give points for playing againts high CR coaches (wether they are good or just cherripickers, elves should defeat them)
and make it worth more than playing a crap match to get a 5-0 score

Still, I'll repeat this, I like the group and I'm thankfull to pizzamogul for his work

My own idea about points:
*opponent TS is 20+ lower, -5 ELF points
opponent TS is 10-20 higher, +5 ELF points
20-30, +10 points
30-40, +15 points
(if posible, count each handicap as +5 TS)
* minimun TS for puntuable matches 20 TS lower
(I won't leave Stuntys, Vamps or Ogres out of the competition, this limits should be enougth)
*opponent CR is 160-170, +5 ELF points
CR 170-180, +10 points
CR 180+, +15 points
*any games in a minor +3 points (SFC +1)
any games in majors +5 points
winning a minor +10 points (SFC +5)
winning a major +15 points (the Fumbbl Cup +20)
(SFC's giving less points so that they don't imbalance the score)
