The season just kicked off. I'm selecting Butte as an early favorite this year after a disappointment first round loss in the playoffs last season.

I plan to like up the body count while the scorers do their thing.

Whatcha got?

At this point, anything can happen. I think there won't be much surprises this tournament. White Rock will continue to perform well, as will Slann Frogcisco.

Also, I trust Washington Generals and my own Tangueros will keep growing and getting far in the league.

White Rock was very lucky last season to have suffered no significant injuries to anyone important.

I doubt that continues, and the rebuild will be awkward as there are a lot of items to try to replace in the preseason.

Then again, it's not so different from how last season started, rookie blitzer, 1 reroll no bench...

Anything can happen.

Caudillos go 3-0 But lose 450k tv in their last match.

If there is a winner in the white rock v butte match they will take the preseason on points. A tie means the caudilos win.

Last night the clash between the two pacter teams in the league ended up in a tie, 1 td for each. After losing it's thrower and his secondary hitter in the second round of preseason, Tangueros was close to win this match in the last minute, but a failed pass prevented it.

Now they stand fourth their side of the preseason match ups. If Butte or White Rock stomp the other, Tangueros might end up third. Anyhow, all marauders are eager to see how divisions are worked out and who they'll tango with!

I forgot to post this a few days ago. Now round two of the tournament is well under way (even a few round three matches have been played!), but I hope you'll still find this amusing.

Western ReSport #1

Welcome fans of the bloody and the spikey to the first, all new issue of Western ReSport, the sports section of The Western Report, the biggest, most important newspaper of the region in the Auld World.

NWFL has started it’s 11th season and here in Western ReSport we will provide insight to the matches played by all four teams in it the AFC West division: B.Aires Tangueros, Slann Frogcisco 49ers, Alberta Bone Chillers and Koskun Fall Immortals. In this first half of the season, they’ll be facing their counterparts of the NFC West: the Butte Kickers, Green Back Smackers, St. Paul Apostles and the new, hairy kids on the block, Maine Manic Monkeys.

Slann Frogcisco 49ers 1 – 0 Maine Manic Monkeys
Frogs started the match strong on the offense, taking down big apes and fouling, while their amazing catcher Jerry Rice secured the ball. Monkeys retaliated with a swift chainsaw by the mercenary Helmut, but the turn after the slann pass for the only td of the match. Trouble ensued for both teams. Monkeys burnt re rolls as crazy and rush to the endzone, but a blitzing frog that find a 1d pow. Even when the crowd tossed the ball to another ape, momentum was lost and the half ended with no further good news for either of them.

In the second half, the apes rushed uphill, but hurried the pass and left the ball carrier unprotected. Frogs recovered the ball, but casualties, if not an unused wizard, left them prevented them from scoring again. After that, coach CW changed tactics to “grab the ball and pass it to no man’s land”. It worked: apes couldn’t get their hands on them long enough to tie the match, even with frogs ending with not a single player on the field. Lessons of the day for the apes: save some rr’s for later and extra arms don’t always help you to grab the ball!

Slann will meet Koskun Falls Immortals next.

Butte Kickers 2 – 0 Alberta Bone Chillers
Chaos veterans secured a solid win against the newcomer Khemri team, whose coach removed some graves and called to the field Ramtut III. Kickers quickly caged around the fast and agile Gas Face Gus, while the Chillers resorted to a hold ground strategy. Speed and agility allowed chaos to move pas the defense, after changing flanks. Kickers scored in turn 5 and resisted the French-named skeletons counterattack to end the half 1 td up. In the defense efforts, a Tomb Guardian was severly hurt and another knocked out. Even hurting super star Larson the claw, one of the Kickers’ key players didn’t help the undying.

Second half started with a blitz for chaos, who profited taking out of the field yet another tomb guardian. Khemri tried their best, even trying a retreat and passing, but a failed catch, quickly out of re rolls and strong pressure in every spot of the field did the drive for the Kickers, who stalled to the last turn to get the win.

Bone Chillers will face Tangueros in the second round.

Green Back Smackers 0 – 2 B.Aires Tangueros
The match up of the most developed teams in their respective divisions was a promising one, but dice prevented the Smackers from doing any harm, and Tangueros waltzed it’s way to a important win. In the first half, orcs tried to outflank pacters, but higher mobility draw them to close quarters. Orcs tried to change flank with some success but Tangueros found a way in for their blitzing mino. By turn 3, the pacters had already ko’ed three orcs and took the ball. Next turn, two more outsted orcs seal the deal and Chaos Pact scored in turn 8.

Leading the score and slightly outnumbering the orcs, Pacters aimed to attrition game in the second half. First few turns the orcs hit harder, but a timely foul in turn 3 by young Acho Estol send a second black orc blocker superstar to the showers. Two ko’s in the same turn would even the field a little, but the dark elf renegade did his elfie thing and dodge forward. His comrades imitated him, offering small cover. A blitz later, drive seemed recovered for the orcs, but the pact mino blitzed, killed and help the elf. Clumsyness followed for pacters, but luck wouldn’t help orcs. Finally Di Sarli managed to free the ball, picked it up and scored in turn 7, securing the deal.

Tangueros will try to keep smiling versus Alberta Bone Chillers, next week.

Koskun Falls Immortals 2 – 0 St. Paul Apostles
Match started ugly for the humans, after a series of both downs and double skulls put their ballcarrier at the mercy of the nurgle assailants. Still, they manage to get the ball back on turn 3 and Nurgle couldn’t find a pow to put down the catcher. He then freed himself and coach Palorrin showed some mischief sending little sprites to grease it’s opponent player’s shoes. Unable to catch the ballcarrier, the Apostles attempt to hurt the humans, with no success whatsoever. They wouldn’t even try for a two turn td, after a slightly favorable Pitch Invasion.

Second half started with both teams with full roosters. Too up in the field, finding no pows and with the big Beast going stupid first, and rolling skulls later, put nurglites in a very tough spot. Both teams losing players left more space for human blitzers to haunt the ballcarrier. Finally, on turn 4, they managed to break the ball free and grab it. But bad luck continued for Nurgle: no pows and turnovers sealed the deal.

Next round St. Paul will attempt to recover versus their fellow division Manic Monkeys from Maine.

Out of division match of the week
White Rock Midnight (AFC East) 0 – 2 Argentinian Caudillos (NFC East)
You bet money on the defending champion? We are very, so very sorry for you, because Argentinian Caudillos soundly defeated White Rock Midnight, ending a five match streak of winnings for the dark elves, who hadn’t lost a match since late last season. Now, Caudillos is surely a team to take into account, but it came from a disappointing 10th season and a discrete preseason, so it was still a surprise they manage a solid win like this one.

A well done stall, exhausting heat, ko’ed players and a riot that moved the clock forward did the first half for Caudillos and a failed trip prevented the tie for the defending champion. In the second half the heat left three dark elves and two regular elves out for the drive. By turn 2, there were only 13 players on the pitch and the dark elves have already burnt they re rolls. A failed hand off finished the deal: dark elves couldn’t secure the ball in the following turns. Their opponents did and the score was settled.

In a play-ahead match for round two, the midnighters recovered, winning 3-0 against sylvans Cincinnati Striders.

Western ReSport #2

Oh, dear fans, what a round! NWFL is starting to warm up. Great stars died last week, amazing results appeared and some teams are proving themselves as a force to be reckoned with. How did the AFC West teams and their fellows from the NFC perform this week? Learn all about it here, in your weekly, local NWFL report.

Slann Frogcisco 49ers 0 – 3 Koskun Falls Immortals
Oh! How the outstanding Frogcisco catcher John Taylor III felt, surrounded by the newcomer Koskun Falls humans! After avoiding death so many matches, being repeatedly target by his opponents that knew of his feeble nature but feared his agile movements and fast, jumping legs, he played daring destiny, knowing that someday Nuffle’s finger would crush him to the ground. But no one expected him to fall under the violent nature of the fans, after the last human pushed him off the pitch.

Taylor’s death comes as a new blow to Slann Frogcisco 49ers, which have endured one injury after the other lately, leaving the team with more journeymen than hired players. Once feared, now the frogs look unstable at best. After this match, they hired a score of linemen. Will they be able to rebuild before season ends?

On the other hand, Immortals from Koskun is rising as one of the most promising new teams in the league, already having four wins in seven matchs, and sharing the top of the board with B.Aires Tangueros, whom they’ll face in round four. In the third round, Slann will face more carnage versus the chaotic Butte Kickers (already played) while the humans will have to deal with the sturdy orcs of Green Back Smackers.

Alberta Bone Chillers 0 – 2 B.Aires Tangueros
Sometimes not even the best of efforts and constant pressure work. Khemri played well this match, outmanning and outblocking the pacters, but to no avail. Better overall strength and twice as many mightyblowers couldn’t help them. Bone Chillers scored only two casualties after 65 blocks and 6 fouls, while the Tangueros did double as much damage with almost half blocks (36) and no fouls. They even had to mourn the dead of a novice Tomb Guardian.

Tangueros made good use of their more apt players, dodged more than what’s advisable and blocked only on a need-to-be-done basis. Still they score two touchdowns and almost get in a third. Two blitzes also helped them control the skeletons. After the match, coach Jorj declared to local Desert Daily that his players “gave a valiant effort”. He also hoped for a better match against the upcoming Maine Manic Monkeys and considered the rest of the season “should be a bit better after playing two of the big three” in their conference.

Up next, Tangueros will have to test arms against the nurglites St. Paul Apostles.

Butte Kickers 2 – 1 Green Back Smackers
Could the team logos be a hint of what was about to come in this match? Orcs showed their back and chaos did oblige. First half orcs started punching forward and screening their ballcarrier, going upstream steadily, while chaos tried to quickly go into a scrum, trusting his bigger, more apt players. After a push that should have been a both down, coach Fangbanger decided it was enough: he shouted a command and his player pushed himself into endzone, giving the orcs a temporary upper hand in turn 4. After that, orcs fielded heir hired bomber and mounted a good defense, but Kickers managed to still score in turn 6, trusting superior numbers would protect them. Some illicit payment to the referi allowed the Bomber to appear one more time, but with no real impact in the match. Orcs run short and by turn 8 only a chainpush, that they did not pursue, would have let them score.

Second half started with four orcs out: one ko’ed, two badly hurt and the finally banned Bomber. Chaos fielded 11 players and quickly took down a few more from their opponents, while managing to avoid the surprising spikes that appeared on the ball. After turn 2, only five orcs remained in the field and tough they put up a fight and koed some beastmen, they were helpless to stop the subsequent touchdown, that came in at turn

Butte Kickers played ahead their match against Slann Frogcisco 49ers and beat them 2-1. Full report, next issue of Western ReSport.

Maine Manic Monkeys X – X St. Paul Apostles
Much to their surprise, the nurgle team left the stadium with the win, after no ape showed dressed to play. St. Paul’s coach was startled at his opponent absence and hoped he was doing well. The flies that follow the Apostles left the pitch without feeding on Monkeys block. Perhaps during the next half of the season?

St. Paul will face B.Aires Tangueros next, probably lamenting their lack of training this match, while Maine Manic Monkeys is up against Alberta Bone Chillers.

Out of division match of the week
North West Walking Brawls (NFC East) 5 – 0 Argentinian Caudillos (NFC East)

You thought Caudillos were finally back after beating the defending champion? Well, their second match casted a doubt over that assumption. After a crippling pre-season, things seemed brighter for the elven team. That’s until they met North West Walking Brawls, the undead team that showed them how elfy a dead squad can be: 5-0 was the astonishing outcome of the match.

Little can be said from the match. Nothing worked for the elves, while everything did for the undead, who rapidly took notice of the fact and avoided any stall. Punishment was so harsh that even coach Keggie McKill asked his players to limit their punches to standing opponents: only one of them piled on, and just once, in the entire match, well below their usual statistics. Crazy detail: no elf suffered any permanent injury.

Aaroon made legend in a really stupid match vs. the Honey Twats. It was so stupid that neither Burgun nor I could figure out if someone was getting diced through about 12 turns.

Then, it became clear who was getting diced...

Western ReSport #3

A week full of amazing plays for AFC West division’s fans! First, the Bone Chillers enjoyed their first win in the season. Then, the young human sensation Immortals got a tie that opened the pacters Tangueros a chance to gain the lead in the division. But, oh boy! They couldn’t and disappointed their fans by only achieving a discrete tie in their own match. Meanwhile, the 49ers began their team reconstruction.

But if you think this round was full of emotions, you should wait to watch the next! Round four will be all in-division matches, with Alberta and Frogciscos trying to up their antes and humans and pacters going head to head, knife between their teeth to take an early advantage towards the play-offs. And beware: the record between these two coaches is bathed in blood! 18 casualties in their last two encounters between coaches Kalessin and Palorrin, when this one was guiding Necropolis Priests Kings! And three of those were DEATHS.

AFC West is already one of the most exiting divisions in the NWFL. In fact, while this issue of Western ReSport was reaching it’s deadline, already three matches of the fourth had been played. So beware, next installment might appear way ahead! And as always, all the excitement in AFC West Division is here, in Western ReSport!

Slann Frogcisco 49ers 1 – 2 Butte Kickers
No one can say that these frogs didn’t try. They used every single dirty trick in their book. But when on your first block your hired superstar gets knocked out and another lineman breaks his neck… you know bad things are coming. Like the chaos ballcarrier Gas Face Gus intercepting your well aimed bomb and returning it to your own players while crying “look momma, with only one hand!” Coach CW even went for an early apo just to keep his lonely star from getting koed. Surprising everyone, on turn 3, the Gus trusted way too much on his coach’s money and recklessly stomped Jerry Rice. A very honorable referi sent him to the showers. In spite of that, Chaos scored on turn 8, mainly out of their superior numbers.

Second half allowed some measure of hope for the frogs, but not much. Chaos took a light pressed in defense just enough to force the seven remaining 49ers to reach the endzone in turn 4, trusting their superior numbers to dominate the field for the rest of the match and earn them the classic 2-1 victory for bashing teams. It was a perilous proposition and nearly failed when blitzing Young III managed to free the all on turn 6. But Kickers retrieved the ball, secure possession and got the win with the last whistle.

Next round Frogs will pray to Nuffle for a great match of Jerry Rice to deal with nasty khemri Bone Chillers, while Butte Kickers will trust their odds against the last team in the division: Maine Manic Monkeys.

Alberta Bone Chillers 2 – 0 Maine Manic Monkeys
Rain was pouring down when the match started, but that didn’t cause the Chillers any problem to grab the ball. Already with superior strength due to their tomb guardians, they would quickly intensify that advantage when a Manic gorilla left the pitch with a broken neck. After that, Chillers did what khemri do: slowly grind it’s opponent. And tough the Monkeys managed to bring the ball free out of the loose cage the skeletons have formed, they couldn’t grab the ball and Alberta scored at the end of the half. A failed pass prevented the score for Maine in turn 8.

Second half started with the undead outnumbering their opponents 11 to 8. Sun appeared on the sky, but that wouldn’t help the monkeys either. They marched forward with a chimpanzee, but he was quickly neutralized by the undeads from the desert and the Monkeys ballcarrier put down the turn after. After that, Alberta simply hold their ground, grind and stall. Chimpanzee Chaz Williams forced the td by pushing Tyrla Boule into his own endzone, in a desperate attempt to grant his team a chance to score. A blitz, tough, ended quickly with that possibility and the match was settled after a thro-ra failed his gfi to the endzone.

Round 4 ahead Alberta will have to deal with Slann Frogcisco 49ers and Maine Manic Monkeys with the dreaded Butte Kickers orcs.

B.Aires Tangueros 1 – 1 St. Paul Apostles
Disappointing match for both teams. Tangueros entered the field hoping for their third win in a row, but left with only one point to show and a few lessons learnt. Apostles, on the other hand, expected to brace the pacter “milonga”. They manage to tie the match, but couldn’t to suffer severe injuries that’ll be regretted in the games to come.

Paradoxically, both teams managed to score when their big guys were at their lowest. B.Aires’ coach despaired at his minotaur’s rage in most turns of the first half, while trainer Charlie was amazed by his trainee stupidity in the second. In the end, no team managed to gain dominion over it’s opponent, and the tie is probably the fairest of the results. A last minute attempt by Tangueros was thwarted by an intelligent positioning by the nurgle coach: flies clouded the field of vision of the pacter passer and the match ended.

Up next, St. Paul will go all its way to Greenland to meet Green Back Smackers’ orcs, while B.Aires will have a difficult game against the Koskun Fall Immortals humans, with whom they share division leadership.

Koskun Falls Immortals 1 – 1 Green Back Smackers
First half started hard for the humans, who took the ball while whitstanding a myriad of knocked out players, including their mighty hired superstar Zug, and even a dead lineman. In spite of their loses, a clever change of flanks by thrower Saito allowed Borma II to run free and finally manage a td in turn 6. Having enough bench to deal with the full might of the orcs and benefiting of perfect defense, Koskun Falls held the Smackers in line for the remaining of the half.

Smackers put an end to the Immortals’ winning streak by scoring in the second half, tough not without difficulties. Better movement closed one side of the pitch and as the orcs changed to other, a failed catch by blitzer Sutherland allowed the humans to surround the ball: at one point, there were seven humans two squares away from the ball. Then, some ill timed re rolls forced turnovers for Koskun. A massive scrum ensued and in the end orcs succeeded in controlling the ball, after yet another human turnover. Sutherland finally grabbed the ball and score on turn 6. A good kick of put the ball near the humans own endzone, and once again, their best efforts were trumped by lack of re rolls, when Alita failed a pick up roll in turn 8.

Immortals will meet with Tangueros next round while Smackers will go for their first win this season against the nurglites Apostles.

Out of division match of the week
Manscape RockApes (AFC North) 3 – 1 Houston Howlers (NFC North)

Some of the newest recruits of the league had a match full of emotions. Both were trying to get their first win after four straight defeats. And tough the necromantic Howlers punched harder and send many a snotling to the hospital, but it wouldn’t suffice. In fact, casualties average was below what ogres usually endure and in the end it would be the ogres RockApes who would take the win home with a clever –and pretty crazy– throw teammate play, a suicide defense that forced rival ballcarriers to fail dodges and XX. At the end of the first half, Ogres were winning 2-0.

Second half showed a second perfect defense for the ogres that sent a shiver through coach Jageroxorz. However, team star werewolf Rex managed to dodge by the defense. Ogres put him down quickly, but his comrade quickly came to his rescue, took out the ogre and Rex scored the second td of his career and the third of his team on turn 4. Necros had a chance when they marked the ogre holding the ball and recovered it, but they hurried up a dodge, missed it and lost the drive to give the ogres their first victory and their first three touchdowns of the team’s existence.
