The Players Code
Cardinal Rules

* Always be polite and respectful
* Never break Fumbbl's site rules

Principles

* Arrive to games on time, and try to only play a game if you believe you will have enough time to complete it (approx 1.5 hours spare minimum).

* Say hello and have fun at the start of a game.

* Avoid using any language your opponent may find offensive even if its ok in your real life social circle.

* If your opponent has questions about skills and how they work, or client functionality answer them truthfully and to the best of your ability.

* Do not complaint about your oppositions play style. i.e. fouling, stalling etc.. are all fine, they are in the rules of the game.

* Do not complain about your bad luck or your opponents good luck.

* Try and play the game in a timely manner, be respectful of your opponents time and try your best not to keep them waiting (eg. when pop ups appear, pressing the turn over button and so on)

* If you have to go away from your keyboard (toilet, answer the phone or door etc...) please let your opponent know before walking away.

* If you cannot complete a game for real life reasons please contact your opponent in a timely manner to arrange an appropriate time to complete it as soon as possible.

* At the end of the game thank your opponent for the game and wish them all the best in the future.

Please sign below.

Thank you :)

I agree with no whining. But IMO commenting on the will of Nuffle is part of the game. The game would be poorer without it.

As I said, it is a matter of how you do it.

OK Garion, be honest. Is this blog a passive-aggressive response to a rude player you experienced recently? ;)
Posted by Garion on 2019-06-26 10:32:19
Haha, I know that's a joke, but to clear that up for people the answer is in my previous blog. Players codes are used in AOS tournaments and based on a psychological study. To me it's all about trying to be the best we can, and they are having a positive impact there, so why not all try and be better people :)
Posted by Verminardo on 2019-06-26 12:04:27
Bearing in mind who this is coming from:

* Do not complain about the current rules set / bad game design. xD

I prefer my humanity over codes... pshhh..

Can't and won't get down with wearing a badge... It isn't a cult.. it's a game.

Posted by Garion on 2019-06-26 14:05:32
my answer is directly below koadah. A direct answer is no, its not aimed at anyone specific. Though i do get very bored of certain peoples constant bad form. Certain box players in particular dont seem capable of playing a game without having a massive rant.

@handykaufman, I understand, but I also believe we should strive to make this as friendly a place as possible. The code is just something to strive for and remind us to do our best. As the studies show it does work, so why dont we just try and be better to eachother. The site could do with a better reputation than it has, and only the people that play here can fix that.
Posted by Chivite on 2019-06-26 17:54:21
another good one would be "dont waste people's time, if your game is going poorly dont act on it on your oponent, he has nothing to do with Nuffle's whims"

ie. dragging the timer all 4 mins for no reason, taking uneccessary long time on actions or chose of skills... etc

"Say hello and have fun at the start of a game." - i just say "HF".
* Avoid using any language your opponent may find offensive even if its ok in your real life social circle." - It's impossible for me to imagine what would offend an opponent i don't know in RL.
Posted by MenonaLoco on 2019-06-26 22:55:35
This idea sounds nice but it doesn't combat anything truly bad.imho. Like none of my worst fumbbl exp would be prevented (like delaying game for everything without a timer: decisions on ss, apo, sf, deployment, using about 10 min for all that is worse than anything on your list.)
Posted by koadah on 2019-06-26 23:16:04
Delaying the game is already explicitly against Fumbbl rules. It doesn't need to be in the Code.

This would probably work better as a guide linked from the help/introductory pages. A blog will just get lost. It could link back here for people to sign.

The wording/tone maybe needs a little work. Complaining, commenting, whinging, whining, ranting?
Posted by Garion on 2019-06-27 00:05:07
What koadah says in regards to time wasting. It's covered in the site rules.

Also it's about just trying to be more positive and mindful, as long as you're trying to be more respectful towards your opposition you will know.

Posted by MenonaLoco on 2019-06-27 08:17:18
"Intentionally delaying the game by for example not ending your turn or by waiting for extended periods of time before moving is not allowed." This is what the fumbbl rules say about delay of game.

"Personal attacks and excessive abusive language is not accepted." This is what it says about interaction/chatting.

So, why reinforce the language issue to the excess of "Avoid using any language your opponent may find offensive" (inspite of not being able to know what others may find offensive), while not touching the other point at all?

"It's covered by the site rules" - and so is abusive language - but bad language doesn't waste your time like delay of game does.

I am trying to grasp this. If it's just more a language focussed thing, it's not really interesting imho.
Posted by Garion on 2019-06-27 10:20:52
Its more a basic philosophy to help encourage people to be more mindful of their behaviour when playing. Most oppnents I play here are a delight, however there are a few extremely toxic people that play here, that do not break the rules, yet make the experience truly unpleasant for the majority of the people they play against. Then there are some people in between. Plus - sometime coaches that are normally a delight to play against are just having a bad day. So this code can help people remind themselves just to check them selves before posting anything that could be inflamatory. Again to repeat, its nota set of strict rules. Its just about making some effort to make the gaming experience for all better.

I have added something about time wasting now, I didn't because it is already in the main rules, however a broad statement in the style of the others can't do any harm just to remind people to be more thoughtful.

On a personal note I wish there was a personal blacklist system where you could add up to 2 maybe 3 coaches max. Then the Blackbox scheduler would never pair you up against that opposition, and the ranked matchmaker would not show them in the list of available games. I know this idea was stopped in fear of people gaming the system to avoid good coaches. But the more I have thought about it over the years the more I think without it people will just leave because of the toxic attitude of a very small minority.

When you run private leagues on fummbl (which I have set up and run alot) you hear people complaining about the same coaches over and over again. Though small in number they have a profoundly negative effect on the community.

Hopefully if we all make an effort to make this a better place it may rub off a little on the worst offenders.
Posted by MenonaLoco on 2019-06-27 16:50:24
The blacklist sounds good.
Figure you could only Block 1 or 2 coaches in box and gf. There are too many good coaches to avoid for pickers. so, avoiding 1 leaves you with the other 99.
While blocking a time-waste would really help.
Posted by Garion on 2019-06-27 16:57:47
yeah thats my feeling as well. 2 people blocked would be enough for me to see off the worst of the worst.
Posted by razmus on 2019-06-28 00:20:26
I'm new to the site, but I did stumble across older white/blacklists (https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=lists&coach=[coach#]) which seems to be inactive. Is there a history on that I should read somewhere?
Posted by koadah on 2019-06-28 09:38:34
They were just lists. They did not affect scheduling.
The blacklists were private. No one else could see them or the comments.

Just as well. ;)

My blacklist has only one name on it. I could add another now. That name is the main reason that I will not sign this code. ;)
Aside from the dice comment thing.

I do not pledge to "always be polite and respectful" to such a person.
I will "break Fumbbl's site rules" to avoid playing against such a person.

Fortunately, in my 14 years on the site I have never actually been drawn against such a person and the people that I will never play against are no longer active.

But, you never know. ;)

I just like to think of it as you’re playing a game with your opponen and not playing a game against your opponent.
