BBT13 Performance Review | Did I improve?
BBT13 - PENGUIN ACADEMY - GOBES PERFORMANCE - ORCS

New Year New Me. After a disaster RRR match and completely hitting my blood bowl low, I sought out coaching from Artemis Black.

I had two session with Artemis and have greatly benefitted from them. I believe I went from a 30-40% coach to a 50-60% coach in the course of a month and a half.

However, playing in random GF games or spinning C teams in the black box is not enough to "prove" I've actually improved.

So now, the BBT13 journey begins. I will be documenting each game as I've done before. I will showcase my honest and raw feelings from the match.

== ORCS ==

Game 1: 1-0 WIN versus Dark Elves; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4596605

A solid win for me. I was on defense first drive and the weather changed to rain as our KO event. My opponent played a bit differently than I imagined. He kept the ball safe for a majority of the half, which I assume was him trying to bait me into overcommitting on a flank or failing a block at some point
but I was able to keep it slow and steady. I managed to CAS a lino before turn 6 which was the trigger for him to start moving. He snakes a GFI and the ball lands in a great spot for my thrower to attempt a pickup. However, we are unable to pow the witch who is nearby and tagging mr. throw, so I had to leave it on the floor.
My opponent was able to pick the ball up on a 4+ and make a desperate move by isolating the witch but in enough squares in which (witch) they could score in. Luckily for me, I was able to pow and give her an SI. I then put myself in a position to score myself. I picked up the ball on a lino, moved my thrower between said lino and a blitzer.
Opponent reacted well enough to make that pathway unlikely to work, so I yolo'd a 6+ pass, which worked! But sadly I snaked the catch. I get another removal early onto half 2 and I pretty much am able to walk it in.

Game 2: 2-1 WIN versus Goblins; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4596725

A Victory but at a cost of two orcs. My opponent recently returned to Blood Bowl since the 90s and it showed. He made tons of mistakes and I was able to punish him for it. He did, however manage to kill an orc lino and a blitzer. I also was able to CAS his team right back luckily. Nothing else to note. I am a bit annoyed at the blitzer death, as it came because I was being greedy and trying hard to block his trolls when I should've played safe.
Luckily, I have enough cash to rebuy a blitzer, give mr throw leader, and grab an apo for game 3.

Game 3: 0-0 DRAW versus Necromantic; https://fumbbl.com/p/match?id=4596796

1D luckers man. He didn't fail a single block and he was taking the most riskiest, frenzy trapping, 1ds out of the blue blocks ive ever seen. Absolutely robbed here. If I wasn't so afraid of failing 1Ds I would've won with 2 GFIs. But no, he's just allowed to do w.e the entire game. Retires the team afterwards too. Hope I never play this guy again.

Game 4: 2-0 WIN versus Chaos Renegades; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4596959

A solid win. Was able to hurt his rogre early into the game but took a Big-Un CAS. Another guy using up his 1d luck on me. I'm getting a bit annoyed now at that. Friendly coach.

Game 5: 2-0 WIN versus Elven Union; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4597195

A routine victory versus an opponent who got pretty unlucky with his KOs not returning ONCE. He had 1 player at the end of the game. Almost pitch-cleared him. I lost a blizter in the first block on the game so that sucks but was able to gain a lot of ssp on a big-un and mr throw got mvp. Friendly Coach.

Game 6: 1-1 DRAW versus Humans; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4597368

Draw versus Game 4's opponent. He played well for having a mostly lino human team. He did however get pretty good dodge and gfi rolls alongside 6 rerolls that let him control the pitch better than I'd like. Luckily, he failed a crucial GFI which gave me the draw. I think I should've won this game but oh well.

Game 7: 0-1 LOST versus Nurgle; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4597427

dicing. also I've had at least 6 orc deaths at this point...

Game 8: 1-1 DRAW versus Shambling Undead; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4597506

An "okay" match. Felt like I should've won. Opponent had good dice and was able to do around 5-7 dodges on his drive to setup a quick score. He also had many pow/pow blockless dice on me which was annoying but happens. No CAS so I'm happy. Blizter who I bought this game scored and got mvp so in the grand scheme of things, it was an "ok" game.

Game 9: 1-0 LOST versus Norse; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4597612

Currently on a bad streak. Opponent played good but I felt he got lucky with the amount of successful 1D and Dodges he took. Had a chance to make it 1-1 but a dubskull forced a rr which could've saved a 3+ catch. Oh well.

Game 10: 2-1 WIN versus Necromantic Horror; https://fumbbl.com/p/match?id=4597798

The streak ends! A lucky last turn gave me win here as the opponent and I played a fairly good game. Few mistakes from both sides, but a lot of good plays as-well. Need to do better though, won't get lucky like this again.

Game 11: 1-0 WIN versus Tomb Kings; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4598011

Solid win, opponent was a bit unhappy with his dice. I got pretty lucky dice this game, a lot of successful dodging and gfi's and no failed blocks.

Game 12: 0-1 LOST versus Lizardmen; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4598120

Swingy match. Game could've been 2-0 either way but sadly I took too much CAS (badly hurts) and my opponent was able to stunty dodge his way to steal the back and score last minute! Great match, annoyed at the lost though. Friendly Coach

Game 13: 1-1 DRAW versus Dwarfs: https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4598210

33 1Ds with only 1 failure says it all. I should've won and the opponent got lucky. His blodger goes down first half and I'm unable to remove him with 3 4+ fouls in a row. Just extremely lucky.

Game 14: 1-2 LOST versus Vampires; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4598324

Decent game, but I feel like vampires are just so lame to play against, especially in the heat weather type making it impossible to defend my ball in the 3rd drive. Unlucky to lose this one, should've been a draw.

Game 15: 2-1 WIN versus Nurgle; https://fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=match&id=4598458

Our final match is against the same Nurgle coach who had diced us earlier into the run. This time however, I diced him. I was able to remove his players with ease and he got a lot of failed blocks and pushes. We end the run with a victory which is awesome since I thought I was going to lose!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, did I improve for BBT13? Let's find out.

BBT13 Orc Record: 7/4/4 = 60% WR

BBT12 Dwarf Record: 5/4/6 = 46% WR

BBT12 Dark Elf Record: 2/1/8 = 16% WR

Looking at the stats from my three main rosters in the past BBT, we can see a DECENT improvement. I also think with a bit more luck, I could've done way better. At least 2 of loses and draws were winnable.

If you're a struggling coach, I recommended looking at getting some coaching sessions. I think I'm good proof that it can and will work if you put the effort and time into it.

There's always room to improve and I'm not finished learning yet. How will I over-come bad streaks/luck of games? We'll find out :)

If you've read up to this point, thanks for reading. I will be doing another set of these for my Norse team but none else till next BBT. Till next time o7

A summary of the games you didn't win reads like this:

1. 1D luckers man.He didn't fail a single block and he was taking the most riskiest, frenzy trapping, 1ds out of the blue blocks ive ever seen. Absolutely robbed here.

2. I think I should've won this game but oh well.

3. dicing.

4. An "okay" match. Felt like I should've won.

5. Opponent played good but I felt he got lucky with the amount of successful 1D and Dodges he took.

6. Swingy match. Game could've been 2-0 either way but sadly I took too much CAS (badly hurts) and my opponent was able to stunty dodge his way to steal the back and score last minute!

Guess Artemis did teach you well...

" I will showcase my honest and raw feelings from the match "

You can see the same feelings in my previous post before Artemis's Coaching. He had no influence on how I see the game or feel afterwards, every coach is different and sees a game differently win/lose/draw. I also do mention when I've been lucky (game 5 and 11) or dicing my opponent (game 15)

A bit unfair to take only my bad games in your post. Not even sure what you're trying to say/prove.

Always remember its not your fault.

I frequently write about my matches, bad or good. I comment on the dice because theyre a part of the game. I have to objectively look at certain aspects and accept "I rolled higher than average removal." or "Opp never rolled a 1 in all of his single dice (or maybe I didnt)". But thats never the main part of what I write.

I always try to add something I learned or try to showcase my own mistakes so I can go back to the replays and compare/contrast. It benefits me more when I point out the learning opportunities (write them down as they are fresh) so that when I go back to replay the game I can apply it more effectively.

A little of my feelings get in there - thats human. This is a game we care about and when it doesnt go our way, it doesn't feel good. Much like stubbing your toe on the corner of the bedroom dresser in the middle of the night, you need to vent something which I kind of consider your "raw feelings". Im okay with those. It might be even better if you listed something you learned or something you or the opp did that youre happy or mad you didnt think about it at the time.

Just a siggestion form a fellow essay-ist.

.5 loss in BBT 12. Someone is a bit upset.

@Jogrenaught

I tend to read your match reports if I see them pop-up! I don't really want a "what I learned" section, the only thing I learnt in these matches is which coaches to try to avoid so I don't face them again to lose! (This was the main reason in Game 15 I was expecting a lost, but Nuffle gave me the win!)

My writing style for these review blogs is to showcase a more "raw" and "brutal" showcase of what blood bowl can really be at the end of the day. If I comeback to write it later in a more clear head, I would likely just tilt the story of the game a little to make it seem less real.

For example, in Game 7, the "dicing." If I had gone back to watch the replay after a while, sure I could probably see that maybe it wasn't as much as a dicing as I thought and spot my mistakes, but that isn't the point of my blog here :) I want to type exactly what I'm feeling at the time!

@Gobes
The point I was making was simply that you said in your blog you are trying to improve at Bloodbowl and your win percentage suggests you are, so well done. However, you could probably improve further, as can we all, by looking at the games where you didn't win and considering if you could have done anything differently or perhaps if you did make any genuine errors, rather than just putting non-wins down to 'dice' which was the impression I got from your reports. Artemis tends to talk in a similar way on discord, hence the link. I've read your response to Jogrenaught where you've explained you were going for raw feelings so fair enough.
Posted by Gobes on 2025-01-10 14:56:47
Fair enough Malmir, for the next one, I'll give it a few hours / a day before writing the match-report and see the difference on how I react to certain matches.
Posted by Sp00keh on 2025-01-11 09:54:45
As Spence said, there are no dice. Also, thinking about dice is mental self-poison

I also get the intent of the blog
And personally I moan about dice more than I should, too

But really the only thing worth focusing on is your own mistakes. Because they’re the only things you can attempt to learn from and improve
Posted by Sp00keh on 2025-01-11 10:04:08
Also when doing your comparison remember orcs have a higher winrate as a roster, anyway
I find them easier to not lose with, than dwarves. Or most other rosters. They can be pretty tough to score on

To expand on the ‘your own mistakes’ thing, it’s worth focusing on why you got scored on

For example sometimes it’s because opp had you out numbered. Ok but why did that happen. Because you gave away too much contact and got bashed. Ok why. Because you were trying to attack the ball. Ok that’s a high risk play and sometimes works, but was it a good idea? Not sure. What were the alternatives? Playing a more stand-off standard defence…
Etc

Being hit by multiple 1d actions (blocks or dodges) is sometimes just a reflection of your opponent assessing that they are on the negative end of an evaluation of raw strength and/or guard. The same can be said on occasion for an opponent attempting rushes consistently - it can be an attempt to spread the field with a slightly faster roster vs slower opposition, or to cover for a roster's inherent slowness.

This will happen frequently with orcs, especially against rosters that have restricted access to S skills.
Posted by Gobes on 2025-01-12 06:05:14
@Spookeh

You're right, orcs have an easier time and winrate. I did play around 15 games with 3 different norse squads beforehand and had a similar ratio, but that was in a whole different mindset and environment.

@Arrested Development

You are correct. Funny enough, Spookeh and I played each other yesterday and I had to take many 1Ds versus his Nurgle team which somehow managed to let me win from it. I think something I should try to learn is when is the right time to make these riskier moves. I play hella safe and I think it has cost me a bit.
