Liverpool signed Danish international centre-back Daniel Agger for more than £5million in January 2006.

The defender arrived from Brondby IF, who he joined aged 12 from childhood side Rosenhoj BK.

Agger was promoted to Brondby's senior squad in July 2004, making his debut in a league match against OB Odense.

He may have been just 19, but the youngster quickly established himself as a first-team regular.

Under the guidance of club captain Per Nielsen, he developed into a cultured centre-half with a maturity beyond his years.

In December 2004 he won the Spillerforeningen Talent of the Year award - the Danish equivalent of PFA Young Player of the Year.

By the end of his debut season he was clutching a Danish Cup and Superliga medals. It was no surprise an international call-up was forthcoming.

Agger won his first cap in a friendly with Finland on June 2, 2005. A few months later he excelled against Wayne Rooney and England, then on September 7 he scored his first international goal in a World Cup qualifier against Georgia.

In December 2005, the Brondby starlet was again named Danish Talent of the Year.

Within a month he'd sign for Liverpool, where Rafa Benitez hoped he would put pressure on established centre-backs Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher.

The deal, which was completed on January 12, 2006, made Agger Denmark's most expensive export.

Meanwhile, back home he won the Arets Fund - or Danish sport's find of the year.

His Reds debut came on February 1 in a Premiership fixture against Birmingham, though injury meant his first few months on Merseyside were spent largely on the sidelines. Despite this, he was selected for the European Under-21 Championships in May and featured in all three of Denmark's games.

The 2006-07 campaign saw Agger force his way into the Liverpool first-team, and he even won PFA Player of the Month for September.

A 35-yard belter against West Ham did his kudos no harm, with the strike winning MOTD Goal of the Month and Liverpoolfc.tv's Goal of the Season.

The highlight of his first full campaign came in the Champions League semi-final second leg versus Chelsea, when his left-foot strike took the game to penalties. Agger went on to play 90 minutes in the final against AC Milan.
