Retired [L] Norse

Founded over a century ago by a band of 15 Norse blacksmiths, Norsenal was one of the leading teams in Norsca League play, but they were asked to leave the league for being too... well, "boring" is the word that was used, but let me explain.

Odds are you've seen Norse teams barnstorming around the Old World -- bands of reckless but skilled blockers, supplemented by throwers and catchers. This is not the kind of football that is played in Norsca itself. You might describe Norsca League football as a thinly disguised melee, but not to a Norsca League player, who would take offense at the notion that the melee was being disguised. Then he would probably beat on you for several minutes.

Here's an example: two years back, a Norsewich City vs. Watfjord match was interrupted with ten minutes left, when the referee discovered that the ball had not been brought onto the pitch before or during the game. The four surviving players, two from each team, spent the last ten minutes of the match beating on the referee.

By contrast, Norsenal not only made sure the ball was on the pitch, they actually tried to play it. This meant two things: a) Norsenal won a lot of games, and b) those games featured fewer maimings, decapitations, etc. than other Norsca League games. Eventually, the fans just got fed up with the lack of violence. Chants of "boring, boring Norsenal" and "There's only one shattered ribcage" filled the stands. Eventually, the fans tried to supplement the lack of carnage on the field by creating carnage in the stands, which was all right... up to a point. After one riot too many, Norsenal was asked to leave.

The good news is, they signed up with OBBA. And if they were notably non-violent by Norsca standards, well, rest assured -- they're still a Norsca team, and as compared to standard Blood Bowl, that's plenty violent enough.
